Back in the day, when we had to chase the woolly mammoths off the ice to play them, they were the Rams, a fine muscular mascot. How they came to be raiders with a sickly dog is a mystery to me. Must have happened while I was in FLorida.

What can I say? I failed to recognize that vaguely canine thing walking around the arena as the Roseville Raider. Everyone who saw it will agree with me that it was at least slightly "canine" in appearance. I went with "Husky". My shame is great.

So when the former Roseville players (Brodts, Ronda Curtin etc) came out onto the ice my wife asks me were there any very good men's players that came out of Roseville? I pointed to former Hobey Baker winner Marty Sertich's name up in the arena with the CC symbol to the left of it and what looked like the St Cloud Husky to the right. I said I'm very confused since I thought Roseville was the Raiders not the Huskies. I'm still confused.

It's been a LONG time since I've lived in MN, but I can actually help with this. The answer is school consolidation. Ramsey Rams + Kellogg Chargers = Roseville Area HS.

From there, the RAHS students at that time selected the nickname Raiders. School administration told them it was inappropriate, please choose again. The administration's initial rejection made the name wildly popular among the students, and the admins finally relented.

But the dog thing is pretty baffling. Best guess is that a stray dog stealing from the trash is less offensive than a human who hijacks boats.

Very good memory! The actual name for Ramsey was "Alexander Ramsey" but many used the abbreviation "Ramsey".

Also a little googling revealed that the Roseville Area scraggly-looking mascot is actually a "Silver Fox". I suppose that makes sense, as in a fox can be a "Raider" of a hen house lol.

Logos from Oakland's NFL team or Pittsburgh's MLB team would be a good start.

In the 1970's Pat Phippen -- a Ramsey Ram -- was a key player for the Gopher Men. Of course that was back when I was living in MN, during the Wooly Mammoth Era.:)

I seem to remember Chris McAlpine was from Roseville but that was long after I was out of the area so I could be wrong, I read that somewhere I think.

Chris McAlpine was certainly the best Gopher men's player that I can remember from Roseville. Also there was Bill Kohn and current and former goalies Nicholas Lehr and Jeff Moen. The Gopher women have had several great players from Roseville and it was nice that they were honored the other day at the Roseville arena.

Correct. And just show my 6th Grade training in MN History is still with me:

Alexander Ramsey = First Governor of the State of Minnesota

Frank B. Kellogg = First Governor of the Territory of Minnesota

Sincere apologies to my 6th Grade teacher if I screwed that up. But I do believe that the above is accurate, and is the reason Roseville Schools chose those names.

Oh yeah, the women were there the other monday but the question was about the men & Chris was the one NHL'er I remember being from there. The Rams may have even come close to winning state in the early 70s IIRC

I don't know her name but you owe her an apology.

Alexander Ramsey was the first Governor of the Territory of Minnesota and the second Governor of the State of Minnesota.

In the interim was the second Governor of the Territory and the first Governor of the State, Henry Hastings Sibley.

There is a high school in West Saint Paul named for Sibley.

Kellogg was a one term 20th century United States Senator and later United States Secretary of State. He co-authored the Kellogg-Briand pact (officially the General Treaty for Renunciation of War as an Instrument of National Policy, also known as the Pact of Paris) for which he was awarded the 1929 Nobel Peace Prize.

A distinguished Minnesota politician but never a Governor.

So it likely was written for Haley's hometown paper, and the GF Herald picked it up off the wire. It'd be nice if one of the local rags had done so, too, but a quick search doesn't find a mention.

Given the level of writing in the local papers I assume none of their reporters are readers. Not just of other papers but of anything more complex than the back of the Froot Loops box at breakfast
