Not sure about giving up 4 goals this weekend but I guess that can be something that they can "work on" in practice.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

It would be interesting to hear the conversation where Frost tells the nation's leading scorer that she is being moved to the third line. "It's not you, it's me." "We're looking for a little more defense." "Yes, you've done all that we asked for, but we shouldn't have to ask."

On second thought, maybe he should leave well enough alone.

I think I've seen a few times this year where Brandt has made a pass toward Potomak where she has been expecting Potomak to anticipate. And Sarah has not, and the pass has gone incomplete. If they keep playing together, I would expect Ms Potomak to start to understand this part of Brandt's game and how she is thinking ahead. Make the potential upside of this line even higher.

Posted May 2015. Wasn't a very popular suggestion at the time. :)

I was totally impressed how brooky was able to go back and find that unpopular post. Almost TTT like!

Given the start of the Gophers' first line at this early juncture of the season, it's very difficult for me to honestly disagree with his prediction, however brazen it seemed at the time. ;)

Snarky response aside, I'll trust the Minnesota coaching staff to figure out what to do with #14 when she is back in the lineup.

"Minnesota returns to Ridder Arena to host Minnesota Duluth next weekend. The Gophers and Bulldogs face off at 6 p.m. CT Friday, Oct. 23 and 4 p.m. CT Saturday, Oct. 24. The Gophers will celebrate Rivalry History Day during game one of the series with UMD. Fans are invited to immerse themselves in over 15 years of Gophers vs. Bulldogs rivalry, reliving historic moments and testing their knowledge with trivia questions."

No fair if ARM plays!!! ;)

"Saturday, Oct. 24 marks the first Student Night of the 2015-16 Gopher women's hockey season. In addition to free pizza and soda, fans will receive free Gopher phone wallets while supplies last."
about time they tried to lure students.
there were a noticeable number of students at the games last weekend, there were more than I could count on my hands, but not enough to need more than hands and feet
And they were actually watching the game.
Usually the only students are band members
I guess today's students are a lot different than in my day, something free to do on a Friday or Saturday? I'd be there, it wouldn't take free pizza.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

The Gophers beat Minnesota-Duluth 5-2. It was another game where Minnesota's puck dominance covered up some shaky defensive play. Both goals allowed were on UMD power plays and involved bad breakdowns. On the second, Kelsey Cline tried to tie up the puck along the half boards, and when she lost it, had no chance to get back into the play. McMillen got caught too far up ice a number of times, resulting in good UMD chances the other way.

On the other hand, Maddie Rooney made some ridiculous saves in the first two periods to keep the Bulldogs in the game. They could have been dead and buried.

Overall, UMD reminded me (and others) a lot more of Bemidji than Harvard. They play the same game in the defensive end, clogging lanes and blocking shots, but they're aggressive on the forecheck. They pressured Minnesota's defense all game long. I came out of it thinking more highly of UMD than I had before the game, despite the loss.

Exactly, they used the Bemidji model but have much more offensive firepower than the Beavers. It was a very good game and one of the reasons was the absence of the cheap crap that had been pretty common the last few years. I can see the Bulldogs making a trip back to the NCAA tourney in the next couple of years if they keep this up.

Didn't see the game but was told by someone who was there that Rooney played very well and faced 50 shots.

Is that number accurate?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

My overall impression of the game is that the Gophers dominated possession and had much better chances.

Gophers came out storming at the start of the game and quickly had 5 or so shots. Then UMD got a PP. Off a not particularly promising opportunity Brykaliuk made a great backhand shot picking the top glove side corner to put the Dogs up. If you can hit that corner from that spot you can score.

1-0 Dogs after the first period.

Gophers came out storming at the start of the second and quickly had 5 or so shots. Then UMD got a PP. Off a not particularly promising scrum along the boards Stalder got possession and made a world class move towards the net which no Gopher was in position to cover.

At that point 2-0 UMD. At that point UMD had had spectacular goaltending and two absolutely stellar moves by national team quality players which had resulted in goals.

That wasn't going to be enough.

Pannek got the Gophers even. She scored two goals from less than five feet from the goal, Phil Esposito type goals. From my perspective she had a tiny deflection for the first and a power play rebound find for a one foot past the goaltender finish. 2-2.

UMD took a penalty right at the end of the second.

I told everyone who would listen to my drivel (which was admittedly only a couple of people) that the Gophers would open the 3rd by scoring on the power play and then get a couple more for a comfortable victory.

It turned out I was right about the Gophers scoring on the opening PP. But there was drama as one of our favorite officials Ludwig wanted to review the goal. Live and on the brief replay offered on the scoreboard video screen I thought it clear that the deflection was OK, clearly below cross bar height, I don't know, maybe he thought contact with something other than the stick (a punch in?). No one was in the crease. 3-2.

The next goal was by Potomak, an absolute beauty, top corner stick side, goalie had absolutely no chance. 4-2.

Empty net 5-2.

Gophers were the better team, clearly deserved to win.

Let's try it again tomorrow afternoon.
