Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/22 & 1/23

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/22 & 1/23

They sure have proven they can beat teams whose win totals you can count on one hand. The Gophers are back!!!

Gophers are 9-3 in last 12, SCSU is 8-3-1. Huskies have a good team this season, but if we have a rematch next weekend they'll be facing a different Gopher team.

Nice shellacking of the lowly and unlucky BADgers tonight putting up a B1G 9 bullets by a revived, smart, and opportunist Gopher squad for the weekend sweep. The Gophers played excellent D all weekend and the offense popped in 12 GF showing new confidence and precision play affectionately known as "Gopher hockey". Congrats to Brodz on his first career hatty, Bristedt extended his point streak to 7, Justin Kloos extended his goal scoring streak to 5 games, and Fasching scored his 6th goal in 5 games. Schierhorn was stellar again between the pipes tonight only giving up 2GA all weekend.

Disappointed in the dangerous and reckless hits by Cavallini and Wittchow. There's no excuse for intent to injure and IMO they should sit a game. Changed my mind about firing Mike Eaves...please keep him this is fun. For you disappointed Badger peanuts:

Not to hijack the thread, but SCSU is 9-2-1 in our last 12. The loss to the U-18 is an exhibition and does not count in the standings.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/22 & 1/23

I hate this team.

There are at least a dozen reasons on display why Eaves should be tarred and feathered for what he's done to this program, but ****ed if any of it seems to matter.

UW athletics are dead to me until Eaves and Alvarez are gone.

As much as I love seeing the Gophers win big even I don't wish this upon good fans like you, gurt and a few others around. Here's hoping Barry does the right thing for you guys.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/22 & 1/23

Is Alvarez the problem not Eaves?

Yes. Other than's Men's basketball, I can't think of a program that is in better position now (maybe I'm missing one?) than it was when Alvarez took over as AD, and several are far worse. He is NOT a good athletic director. Some may point to the new facilities and fund raising; but, do you really think that wouldn't have occurred anyway with another Athletic Director? Keep him as a figurehead if we want to uphold the "legend of Barry". However, behind the scenes, he should have absolutely no power on any budget or new coaching decisions (outside of maybe football coaching decisions), and the current Athletic Dept staff probably needs to be gutted - bring in others and quietly give them the real power/authority behind the scenes.

I second this. I love to hate on the Badgers, but their fans deserve better than this. This rivalry also needs to be healthy if the B1G is going to be healthy.

I was at the game and talked to a lot of the Badger fans around me. They've had enough. Great crowd tonight. Gotta give Badger fans props for coming out and supporting their team despite the crap Eaves has put on the ice.

It won't last forever Badger fans.

Makes me wonder how Mark Johnson does it.

As I was watching last night I had the same thoughts. I was also wondering how much longer the fans will support the team. That kind of beating may end up depressing attendance until changes are made and on-ice improvement is evident.

Meanwhile the opposite is going on with the Gophers. Given their recent resurgence I expect some of the naysayers will jump on the bandwagon again and start filling those empty seats at Mariucci.

Minnesota is desperate for a winner right now. If the Wild continue freefall the Gopher Hockey Team is it for the winter sports.

I'm really hoping the BTHC suspends Wittchow for more than a game after that hit. He should sit for at least a weekend.

Do have to take my hat off to the UW fans. They seem to really continue a program that's been skidding for quite a while.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/22 & 1/23

I don't like that hit.

Every time one of those happens, there are some around here that proclaim that it's a good hit and it was a good hit back in the day when they played, etc, etc, etc.

Times have changed and with all we now know about head contact, the sport should adapt.

I'd be okay if those open ice blow up hits were legislated out of the game completely. Doesn't really matter whether the head is targeted with the hit or not as often the most damaging aspect of the play is when the victim's head slams off the ice. That can (and does) happen even when the check is otherwise "legal."

In the end, there's really no hockey reason to hit a player that hard in open ice. Separating the man from the puck doesn't require that amount of force. It's excessive and only seeks to satisfy the bloodlust of the most meatheaded fans. When a player doesn't see you coming, a poke check or even a bump will work 90% (or more) of the time.

There's no reason that a college kid (or high school on down) should have to spend a week in a dark room or risk a more severe brain injury so that some morons in the stands can get their fix. It's simply a bad play no matter how "cool" it looks or how it was legal back in the day.

These are actual humans out there and somebody's kid with real lives and real futures.

My solution? Institute a targeting penalty (5 plus game DQ) similar to targeting a defenseless football receiver. Essentially if you skate into a guy in open ice from his blindside and destroy him, you're gone.

Okay, cue the "you're pussifying the game rabble" or the referees can't make that decision in real time crowd.

Yes they can and the simple threat of those consequences would most likely eliminate the hits altogether.

I can't disagree. I have a nephew that suffered severe head trauma (not hockey related). He is a lucky one, but my wife and I spent a lot of time in the the trauma unit. There is no need for these dangerous hits. He wasn't the only miracle recovery we saw there. We saw a number that didn't make it. Thanks for your thoughts on this, Gurt.

Absolutely brilliantly stated. Agree 100% Gurt.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/22 & 1/23

Very severe and malicious hit by Wittchow that most likely knocked Novak unconscious. Tramatic Brain Injury is very serious and a hit like this can alter a young man's life forever. Hopefully no concussion symptoms. THE HIT.
