Minnesota State, Mankato, Season Thread

Re: Minnesota State, Mankato, Season Thread

Quoting WCHA Commissioner, Bruce McLeod from todays press release, "Our remaining member institutions - Alaska Anchorage, Bemidji State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State, and St. Cloud State - are absolutely committed to both Division 1 hockey and the WCHA......"

Obviously he knows something that Maverick supporters on USCHO are not aware of.

Do you suppose Buisman has made a committment to improve the product in Mankato?

No.

Talk is cheap. There are never anything but platitudes, never any tangible plan to improve things. "We remain committed blah blah blah..."

Any commitment will start with donors, that's how Tech has signed our new coach to a $1.5m 5-year contract. If you want Jutting fired show the AD the money.

It's against Minnesota law to pay any state employee that much without specific permission from the state. The University of Minnesota is, of course, specifically exempted from that restriction.

What's the max? Actually, Lucia makes most of his salary from indirect compensation. His base is less than Pearson's.

I'd have to go look it up. It's based on the governor's salary, something like a max of 30% more than the governor's salary.

Re: Minnesota State, Mankato, Season Thread

Actually, it's a max of 10% over the governor's salary, with the University of Minnesota and a few specifically named jobs exempted. Coaches at Minnesota State are not among the exemptions. Since the governor makes $120K, the max would be $132K.

I beg to differ on this. I'm not disagreeing that there is a rule out there, but Sandelin and Motzko are both making more than that. Before his big extension this year Sandelin was making $150K and, more important to this disuccsion since he's part of MnSCU, Motzko is making $167K.....in fact, Jutting is making $138K.

Jutting is only worth $138K.. :D I heard they offered him a buyout.. Has anyone else heard this?

Re: Minnesota State, Mankato, Season Thread

Not a peep. I'd like to know, because as of now I'm not renewing my season tickets.

Not renewing your season tickets is the wrong approach. It my be the easiest thing you can do to show your dissatifaction, but will be the least effective. As others are suggesting, get more involved, more vocal, and get organized. Showing the Administration fans are willing to pay for a better product will get things done. If you really care about the program, don't walk away.

The administration has shown absolutely no indication that the hockey program even rises to the level of an afterthought. I don't have time in my life to launch any quixotic adventures.

But you have time to make comments about the program on here?

Yeah, they're functionally equivalent activites. In the time it took me to post this, I could have organized a group, gotten a meeting with the university president and athletic director, done some fund raising, and gotten Jutting fired. You make an excellent point.

Bronzey makes a good point. I hate to make this a Gopher thing, but look at UM. Empty seats everywhere in the arena, poor effort/team on the ice, everyone wanted/wants Lucia gone, people not renewing season tickets etc etc. To agree with Bronzebacks, I think not renewing is a cop out. If you love your team, you will renew. If you don't renew, I'd argue that you are just as bad as the administration that you criticize. RWD made a great point on GPL awhile back. The only good thing that can come from all the people not renewing their season tickets at UM is the fact that there is such a long waiting list of people that badly want season tickets and can't wait to have their name called. RWD's point was that this may ignite a new attitude and fire in the program here at the U. Along with the re-addition of Guentzel, there is a renewed sense of pride and optimism in the program. Although I don't see it getting better as soon as some people do, RWD's point may be a good one as there is definitely some added anticipation around the start of this season. In your case though, I kind of doubt that there is a waiting list at MSU-M. Your choice to not renew tickets seems like more of a cop out to me than anything else. If you really care about the program, you would support it even through times like this and hope for better days ahead.

Sorry, that got a little long-winded and I am sorry for piling on you, MavsFan. I'm sure you're not the only one with that attitude about your program or anywhere for that matter. So I don't by any means intend to point this post directly at you because this sort of thing goes on with every program at some point in time. Also, sorry again for bring the Gophers into the convo(is that some sort of cardinal sin?), but I think some of the points made are valid.

From what I heard, the problem isn't bringing in the high profile coach. The problem is the supporting cast that comes with a high profile coach. Bringing in a high profile coach will cost the University more money, in addition a higher profile coach will bring in higher profile assistants who, based on the head coach's salary, will want more money, and the University just can't generate the money to do so. It sounds as if there is some interest in going elsewhere as far as a head coach, but that it's somewhat impossible at this point.

Whether this is a load of crap to try and keep us content, or if this is truth, is a good question.
