Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Reality check last night. We're not going undefeated. Also, we're not going to score 4+ goals every game. Plenty of work left to do, but we're 3/4 of the way through a busy, tough October schedule at 5-1. Let's get it together boys, and get ready for Ferris.

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

to play a bit of catch up here as I have been absent from the thread

1) I dont mind the 3rd jerseys, and even the all purple ones arent bad but i still think that a all yellow one is needed and something different as far as logo goes. the 80's D2 champ Maverick logo is a great throw back design they dont use enough, even just something with the state of MN outline and the word STATE across... anything different and colorful. Maybe im just an odd duck but I greatly miss colorful jerseys. 80s MLB jersey were the best!

2) Im keeping my hopes within reason. Looking at the first 6 games and I thought a 2-2-2 was a reasonable expectation. 5-1 is great. IMO puck movement seems to be so much better this year. Last year they seemed unable to replace Leiner and palmquist puck movement. Even at 5-1 have to remember this team is young and we could see some growing pains. we will see how it goes but so far so good. They have been fun to watch!

3)I have always been pretty die-hard for the mavs. I personally hope we never go to the NCHC. I was at the tech series and for the life me I cant believe the student section would sit there and allow other fans to be louder. When i attended MSU we were never this good but somehow we have a more passionate student section. Heck we waited outside in freezing temps for gopher tickets and we all knew we would lose those games. Im not sure what the problem is but I think cell phones dont help. swear it seems that 90% of the student section is more interested in who just texted them then what is happening on the ice. Maybe that is because no UND, SCSU, UMD on a regular basis. Im not sure, it will be interesting to see what the students are like for the UofM game. I will say that I think the school/city needs to do something to boost fan appeal and attendance. 3400 for a friday game against SCSU? thats not good enough.

4) anyone else going to Alabama this year? 4 of us just bought our tickets to fly down to atlanta friday morning. wasnt too bad priced. looking forward to the trip.

looking forward to this weekends serieis with Ferris. get 3 pts minimum. keep that momentum building

Crap. Brickley hurt, and Coach Hastings told Shane Frederick that the Brick will be out "for awhile." From a team perspective, it leaves a big hole at both ends of the ice, and it forces some inexperienced player (Bigelbach, Hookenson, or maybe moving Schwalbe back to D) into the lineup. From the kid's perspective, this comes just as he was really making a name for himself with NHL teams. Bummer all around.

losing Brinkley will be tough but luckily its early. Hasting will have the next guy up and ready. This team needs to continue to improve because looking ahead we have the Gophers soon. Without the North Star Cup these nonconference wins are important.

looking forward to this weekends Ferris games. Need to keep them winless and get those 6 points.

Well, a win's a win, right? Decent first period, then I thought FSU outplayed us by a lot in the second. Nice snipe by Scheid and a great individual play by McClure helped us out score the Bulldogs that period when we deserved a worse fate. Did seem to find out a game a little bit in the third.
Nice to see Stepan back on the ice. Made some smart plays throughout.

It was a little lackluster, but the speed and transition game again was superior to the opponent. It's remarkable some of the passing plays this team makes on rushes.

Well that was a interesting series. Saturday game was difficult to watch for most of it, FSU was really clogging up that neutral zone and our passing was not as crisp as It could have been but silver lining down 3 With 10 to play they tied it up. Only to blow it but was still happy with the come back.

3500 for a Saturday game? For a team that's fun to watch and 5-1 I don't get it.

Still 6-2 and the next series should be a good one. Interested to see LSSU play.

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Good signing day yesterday. 9 players, which seemed like a pretty big haul, given we only have 6 seniors on the roster (plus, perhaps, an early departure for Brickley, if all of this NHL interest pans out and his injury isn't too serious). I've seen Kivlenieks a few times this year down here in Sioux City, and he seems to be a good one. It will be nice to get another Latvian on the roster!

well this team is extremely bipolar. Just cant figure them out, they go through periods and even whole games unable to generate offense then boom can score 3 goals in a few minutes. If they could find some consistency they could be deadly. The freshman class is looking like a real winner however I definitely will wait as I have seen freshman have a good season and then sophomore year its a struggle.
It was obvious against Alaska we need Foguth back and soon, geesh we left our goalies hanging in the wind a few times that game. Need to go 3-1 minimum these next 3 games, especially a sweep of Princeton is a must (though they swept bemidji) going into the break at 12-6-2 is a good start. At this point I think winning another WCHA crown will be tough but if this team could just get firing on all cylinders come march we could be a force.

Amen! I'd also like to see one goaltender grab the job and make it his own. Still, after last season's offensive struggles, it's been a lot of fun to see some goals this year!

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

And the conundrum continues... Very frustrating that we have no consistency.
I have to say that I'm concerned that the worst team that we've had under Hastings is the first year that they're entirely his recruits. There's little question that he's a better coach than Jutting was, but was Jutting a better recruiter?

The thought crossed my mind for 5 seconds but then I remembered all the dry years where jutting didn't recruit the best (side not that I really liked troy as person) nor make the most of what he had. This team has talent, tons of it, I think it's taking time to put it all together. Under Hastings we Have grown accustomed to winning.... Sometimes I have to remember that because from the time I became a maverick fan till a few years ago the ncaa were never expected nor a reality now they are expected. I have complete faith in him and look at the class he has this year and coming next it has tons of talent

well it was nice to see them come back and get a split. Next weekends series is a big one as Princeton is obviously not a push over after sweeping Quinnipiac and Bemidji. So it will help pairwise for sure if we can get a road sweep, also be nice to finish the first half on a high note. After this I will see them in Alabama as we are heading down for those games.

Good to see them battle back from 2 down. They haven't given up on the season yet. I do think the talent is there, and at times it shows, but the consistency is really missing.

Enjoy Huntsville. It sounds like a fun trip!

This season is slipping away. Losing to Princeton on the road is one thing; getting absolutely smoked is another.

Yes we have to show up each night. However we have to give Princeton some kudos. They swept Q last week and swept Bemidji in Bemidji. Both top 20 team and also us at 19. Hopefully we show up tonight....
