Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Gigantic matchup this weekend.. Likely to have large seeding and playoff implications if either team can get a sweep. Should be fun hockey.

Gonna be a fun weekend, haven't been in Mankato for hockey since UMD visited two years ago.

Need a jersey to wear? Promise it'll be better than the black and gold one your wife wants you to wear...
No, I'm good. I've got multiple jerseys to wear and haven't worn a few in a while...excited to do so.

Game day!!!!!!!

Maverick Hockey finally returns this evening with a HUGE series at home against Michigan Tech!

Looking forward to seeing the Mavericks young guys try and consistently put the puck in the net. This year's team is going to have a youthful flavor, and it should be fun to see what this staff's recruiting class looks like in the purple and gold! (and black...)

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Well, that was certainly interesting. I complained all last year about lack of calls, so I can't really complain now that there were too many. Most of the calls were legit, although their definition of hooking seems pretty wide. But the players seemed to adjust and the last 2 periods were mostly 5 X 5.

That might be the best game I've ever seen Huggy play. He ventured out of the net a little more than I would have liked, but that seemed to be part of a general pattern of an aggressive, confident game. Some shaky D zone play for us, but there was also a lot to like.

You could see Tech really asserting itself the last 2 periods. We'll need to be ready for a strong game from them tonight.

Well, the first 2 of 4 battles goes to the Mavs. Things seem more normal again, not hating the Mavs for trying to leave the league, but being such a well coached, difficult team to play against. I give Coach Hastings all the credit, he had his team ready this weekend. We all thought split this weekend was the worst possibility as Tech appeared to have an edge going into the series this year. Hopefully, the return trip to Houghton will provide us the chance to even the score.

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Saved by Huggy on Friday, but I thought we were really good on Saturday. I was concerned about points from our D, but Brickley sure looked comfortable with the puck and made things happen. And as for the freshmen forwards, Michaelis showed a lot, and French and Rivera were good in their roles. I still think Tuomie will be a solid player before the year's over.

Good weekend, and now on to an even bigger test. Hastings is 5-5 against Lucia, 3-2 against Sandelin, but 0-6 against Motzko. Let's end the streak!

I know he really wants to beat the Huskies. I imagine intensity is high at practice this week. Plus, these are two HUGE games. Could really set themselves up nicely with wins.

I think it the last two seasons have shown us anything, this series will make all the difference in the world when it comes to National Tournament aspirations. Lose them both and we almost definitely have to win the conference tourney (that's only a slight exaggeration). Win them both and we have a bit of wiggle room in conference play.

A sweep this weekend would be gigantic for the pairwise at the end of the year. A win and tie even would work.

I'm thinking split, and I'd be surprised if the Mavs sweep. Especially if the officials call it right again.. SCSU's PP has been awesome the last few years under Motzko.

It has been very, very good. That's definitely the key. The only caveat of that is that I believe SCSU lost it's top 6 scorers from last year. There is some potential that they are still getting their feet under them. We'll see. MSU's defense and PK were darn good last weekend. Hopefully that continues.

New home sweaters this year. Black shoulders, bull on front, and PURPLE NUMBERS! Black and gold trim, they look nice.

I thought these sweaters were the best ones we've worn in years, but then they brought out their alternate last night that looked even better. MSU did a great job on the home sweaters, I really love the new look! I hope we see similar improvements to the road jerseys.

Agree 100%! I'm normally not a big fan of lettering on the front, but those jerseys looked fabulous. Of course, winning makes everything look better!

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

HUGE sweep! It's fun seeing that speed.. Allows the Mavs to really use the quick transition game that Hastings wants them to play.. Fantastic start to the year!

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

The lettering on the front of the new alternates looks light blue because of the heavy white outlining, and virtually no visible gold. Great weekend though!

Well, it's game day. Let's see just how our boys react to a little success.

On a side note, I saw that I had a notification that I got a reputation boost from someone. And then I went down the rabbit hole of looking at comments that I made from 3-4 years ago. It made me realize a couple of things:

1. I was a real dick at times. Some of the comments I made were kinda funny, but more accurately they were just dickish.
2. It just re-enforced how much damage has been done by the changes in college hockey. I'm not trying to re-hash the decisions. It is what it is, but the ramifications to fans of a lot of teams seem to be horrible. The amount of passion that I and many, many other people had is now gone. I just don't care as much as I used to. It could be me finally maturing, but I really think it has to do with the fact that I don't personally know a single person of any other team in the conference. I'm still convinced MSU is eventually going to end up in the NCHC, but the effects of the changes have been devastating to many of the fan bases.

We all have our moments of obnoxious behavior! Don't beat yourself up about it. Some people get angry about important stuff, like hockey, and some clog up my Twitter and Facebook with angry political stuff. Given the choice of those 2 things, I'll take angry hockey messages any day!

I get your point and I think a lot of fans feel that way. Getting SCSU back in our building only served to remind many that because of the conference situation, our most obvious rival hadn't been in our building in 5 years. But for me, strangely, I seem to be enjoying Mav hockey more these days, and the weird turning point was the RIT game 2 years ago. That loss was so crushing, because I think we were, if not the best team in the country, easily one of the top 4, and to have no NCAA wins to show for it seemed like such a waste of a great season. But it also taught me that I should have spent less time that year worrying about Pairwise, MacNaughton, Broadmoor, NSC Cup, etc., and more time just enjoying the games themselves. It's a beautiful game to watch, played by eager kids, well coached and busting their butts out there. And after the Friday games, I get to take my broke college student daughter to the Boulder Tap House for wings and chocolate shakes. And for me at this stage of my life, that's a pretty great evening.

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Stayed up to watch this one.

I think the Freshmen have exceeded all expectations. 5 goals tonight. Impressive,

Re: Minnesota State 2016-2017: From Forgotten to Hated

Let's do it again tonight.

Love the speed this team plays with. And how about the discipline? Lots of hockey left, but a great start for the Mavs.

All purple jerseys are AWESOME.
