• If an offsides or too many men on the ice penalty is missed and a goal is scored, the play may be reviewed if the puck remains in the offensive zone after the missed infraction. If the puck leaves the attacking zone, the offsides or too many men on the ice penalty is no longer reviewable. This replaces the previous wording that only allowed a review if the missed play directly led to a goal.

I don't have a dog in this fight (or even a gopher or badger :-) but I'm curious - after watching this game on TV - why was the Wisconsin open-net "goal" not reviewed? Does the revised rule in question only apply if an off-sides is missed (i.e., NOT called, as was done seconds later to the apparent Minnesota goal), rather than called incorrectly? The Wisconsin player clearly finished the play with a goal (with video evidence he was NOT off-sides) as the whistle was being blown, but there were no Minnesota skaters between him and the net, so it can't be claimed that the defense gave up on the play once they heard the whistle. Absent a(n incorrect) whistle, Wisconsin clearly scores into the undefended net; why isn't such a play reviewable? Shouldn't there be some referee discretion here, much like a goal can be scored into a dislodged net if the referee judges it was dislodged during the shot by the defense? The linesman blew it (pun intended); why should Wisconsin be penalized when Minnesota was in no position to contest the shot? In the end Wisconsin prevailed, but imagine if the tying Gopher "goal" seconds later had stood, or if such a scenario played out in a NCAA game ...

IIRC the offside was called before Kunin (?) shot the puck into the open net. That would not be reviewable.

With the Mich win tonight and going into the 3rd tied 1-1 with the Badgers, the question was, "How bad do you want to win this championship?". They came out with energy, worked hard, and buried their chances in the third for the 4-1 W to cap off a rough and tumble regular season as B1G champions.

Congrats to the Minnesota Golden Gophers - 2016 Big Ten Champions. The program's 5th straight regular season championship, including two from the WCHA, ties Boston University for the most consecutive RS championships in NCAA men's ice hockey. Quite an accomplishment for the program.

A team with an overall record of 19-16 are their conference champs. Dam that's impressive.

Well, we had a slow start, lots of bumps in the road, but in the end we hung a banner. Five straight RS championships is very difficult to accomplish in college hockey today and that speaks volumes about the consistent quality of the Gopher hockey program.

Well said. I really liked the way they defended after Wisconsin pulled their goalie which made it a 6 on 4. Guys were sacrificing their bodies, blocking many shots that otherwise had a good chance of going in, and Schierhorn came up huge on several that did get through.

Sure is. With all the losses due to graduation and early departures, everyone knew that this was going to be a rebuilding year, and so to win the league again is something to be very proud of. Now the question becomes, are they satisfied or are they still hungry for more?

It sure doesn't hurt. Neither does getting over 25% of your games against in-conference teams as weak as CC and Western.

Absolutely sexay connection from Linhart to Kunin for our only goal.

Unfortunately for UW, the Gophers not only tackle better than their football team, they also play hokey better than our team.

How often is a regular season champ of a decent conference not a sure thing for the NCAAs?

Your games against Vermont, Mankato, UConn, & Bemidji really blow warm air up my skirt (total record in those games of 3-3-0). :p

Really? You're going to play that card?

The gophers' top 4 conference opponents are ranked 6, 21, 30, and 41.

UND's top 4 conference opponents are ranked 3,6 13, and 17.

Against AHC and WCHA teams? Minn: 1-5; UND: 3-0-1

UND against B1G teams? 2-0

Minn against NCHC teams? 0-4

Either Robert Morris or UMinn could beat UND in the first round of the NCAAs; we all know that. It's the nature of the game. But when you finish the regular season ranked 18th, your team just plain sucks. Badger fans can admit it when their team sucks. UND fans have had to admit it plenty of times in the past, and I hope they will when it happens again.
