Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

So with the non-stop coverage of Jabs, I haven't heard anything about the girl who got injured in a check from behind. Is she recovering? Is that why? Was hers just not as serious but got attention because of Jabs, or is it the case of the media just grabbing on to one story and running?

AFAIK, her injury wasn't because of a hit, it's happened before with her, and it happened after Jablonski's. All of that contributes to how the media is handling it.

So what was her injury and what caused it, if not a hit?

Jenna Privette, 18, went down during a game on January 6. She was taken to a hospital, where she is currently paralyzed from the waist down. Jenna suffered a similar injury in 2008 and recovered, so doctors are hopeful she will recover from this one, too.

An official filled out a report on the incident which claims, "She was not contacted illegally, did not fall into the boards and did not appear to fall awkwardly to the ice." The report goes on to say that he spoke with the linesman, the school's athletic director and the EMT on duty, and "everyone agreed that the player appeared to fall unaided."

She also left the hospital yesterday to go to a rehab facility, and is expected to regain all movement eventually. Not that what she is going through isn't serious, but I don't think it would have even hit the radar had there not been so much coverage of Jabs.

Bit of a bittersweet picture for me.

Minnetonka looked great on Saturday playing against the #1 team in the state and throttling them, is Tonka that good or did Duluth East just not bring their 'A' game?

I have a feeling we may see these two playing against each other at the xcel in March.

I don't know if they are THAT good, but they certainly are a team that could beat Duluth East again, when it matters...if they get a chance. Probably the top competition for Duluth East.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

The problem(s) for Tonka will be the grind of the Lake with 1 more game against Edina and 2 more each against EP and Wayzata, then section 6AA that has BSM, EP and Wayzata. Sure they'll probably be favored but that's quite the path to take.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

It should be set up for a rematch in the state title game, who knows what will happen, one could fall off and lose the 1 or 2 seed, or they could get knocked off before the championship game. But at this point, I think those are top 2 teams in the state, with a bullet. Before Saturday I would have said its Duluth East and then everyone else, after that game, it is obvious that Minnetonka is right there as well.

Ummm, did you happen to catch the score of the Tonka conference game from a couple nights before that?

And let's not forget Maple Grove, Wayzata and BSM. Just cause some teams have gotten hot and looked great does not assure them of an easy road to the Sate finals.

Yeah, I saw that. It still doesn't change the fact that I think Minnetonka and Duluth East are the two best teams in the state.

The new high school rules have now been adopted by Minnesota Hockey, and went into effect yesterday.

Not quite true. MN Hockey did not adopt a 5 Minute Major for head contact as MSHSL did, just CFB and Boarding.

To quote another jurisdiction:

Incidental contact to the head or neck area should be a minor penalty. Significant contact should be a Major

I'm not sure. The official can always call high sticking, elbowing, or roughing. But when the head, face, or neck area is the principal point of contact, I think the penalty should be more severe.

A tip of the helmet, though, to MN Hockey for the videos they have produced on what is a legal and what is an illegal check. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I've pointed our coaches here in MD to those videos to see the desired outcome. As a bonus, the drills are pretty good too!

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

I'm going to the Hopkins at Edina game tonight. The Hopkins coach is a former Hornet, former MTU Husky, and was my kid's first year squirt coach. Also, my son's team is playing next door at 8:15 PM.
wow, I have no idea that Rolf Ulvin was the coach, or that he was a former Hornet...

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

Tonka let Wayzata hang around for a period, but scored 2 in the 2nd, 3 quick ones in the 3rd and are up 5-1 with 3:33 left.
