Minnesota High School Hockey 09-10: Pack your bags, we're going to St. Paul!

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 09-10: Pack your bags, we're going to St. Paul!

Braemar is over 2k. Don't know about BIG but it sure looks a lot smaller. I saw a sign at Richfield last night that said capacity was over 1800. Don't know who they'd ever squeeze that many into that cracker box.

Richfield is sneaky big. :)

These games should be at Mariucci.

It is too bad that there isn't a decent 4000-5000 seat arena in the Twin Cities area, that would be perfect for these types of games. The only place I can think of is the Colisseum, and I wasn't impressed with watching hockey there.

Aldrich is abot that size - but obviously too far away.

Edit: Alrich is 3400.

I remember going to Aldrich for section championship games when I was in high school, I didn't realize it was that big. I'm guessing the Woodbury/CDH section and the Hill-Murry/WBL section would use Aldrich.

Aldrich might have the worst locker room facilities of any arena in the state not named Drake.
The past few years the Woodbury/CDH section finals have been at the Fairgrounds.

I remember in my junior year of high school, back when Red Wing was in the section with STA and Mahtomedi, we were the 2 seed and Mahtomedi was the 1. I think the game was tied 1-1 going into OT, and when we scored in OT to go to state, the team celebrated right in front of the student section. The entire section of students pushed their way down to the glass, crowding the glass, the team lifted the goal scorer up to the top of their pile and he was at the level of the glass. The students pulled him over the glass like he was crowd surfing, so far that his skates were the only think still over the ice. Then the rink staff and school administration put an end to that rather quickly...:p

I was going to suggest Ridder, but it has exactly the same amount of seating as Aldrich.

Wasn't the Ice Cube or whatever supposed to be about that size?

Yeah, I think so, you're thinking of the rink they were talking about putting down by the X, right?

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 09-10: Pack your bags, we're going to St. Paul!

Just to reiterate, I hate Edina:D

Well, we lost last night, so now I have to hope for the best state torunament possible, so I can see the best hockey.

P.S. Solid performance out of #2 Redwood Valley:p 7-3 loss to Luverne? Yikes.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 09-10: Pack your bags, we're going to St. Paul!

BIG has more capacity than most people think. I suck at estimating, but I bet it holds at least 1800. The problem is that the sightlines suck there. I'd suggest getting there early or you might get stuck too low down and not being able to see a quarter/half of the ice.

I actually think the Fairgrounds is a really cool atmosphere for games if you can get the arena reasonably filled. It will be fun for the Hill/WBL final.

EDIT: Didn't the semifinals for what is now 2AA used to be a Mariucci? I thought Burnsville's huge upset over Holy Angels like three years ago was a semi and that was played at Mariucci.

You're nuts on according to rinkfinder - 1800 for the big rink at BIG.

I like the fairgrounds too, can be really fun. The CDH-Woodbury OT game a few years ago had an awesome atmosphere.

2AA and 6AA are usually at Mariucci. The U effed up and scheduled some stupid figure skating thing at that time so they moved it to the Target Center this year. Same story as the gophers-badgers game that friday.

It was 6-3, not that that's much consolation. :o

They'd beaten Luverne both times this year, by a combined 14 to 2. And, in this game, they were up 3 - 2 after the 2nd. Then: 4 goals in the 3rd for Luverne. Yikes is right.

Seems like that happens a lot to teams like Redwood: A usual bottom-dweller, finally having a great regular season, then finding that the playoffs are a whole 'nother matter. Hopefully it's a learning experience for everybody, and then next year they'll know what that next level requires.

I meant for the semifinals.

And the more I think about it, I know the B-ville upset over AHA was at Mariucci, but don't remember if it was the semis or final, and I know Apple Valley upset AHA in the semifinals the year prior, but can't remember where that game was at.

I heard on the radio that Mariucci has been too full for those games so they're glad they're at Target Center. Seems getting folks in and out between games at Mariucci was becoming a problem.

I was there last year, and there we so many people packed into Mariucci people were 5-6 deep in the concourse. We were next to the Minnetonka student section, they had students sitting in the aisles.

Nope. Semis have been at non-home high school rinks, just like this year. Like Edina plays at BIG and Jefferson at Braemar.
