Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Does anyone have a link for a live feed of the Minnesota high school tournament?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

I think you're the only Gopher fan who is of this mindset.

Probably, but I bet there are a few who would be glad not to have to deal with their fans, plus how would their fans be able to cope not having us to obsess about anymore. :D :D :D

Their fans are a small price to pay for the best rivalry in college hockey.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

I haven't read or heard anything that would make me think the BTHC is good for college hockey. IMHO it may hurt some of the smaller programs.

It will also make for a conference final outside of MN on a regular basis. I for one don't look forward to a semi-annual trip to places such as Detroit!

The scheduling plan would involve a six-team Big Ten conference double round-robin, (20 games) and an additional 14-16 (inc. Alaska) non-conference games, of which eight or ten of those would be with WCHA and CCHA opponents. The WCHA fanbases are strong enough to financially sustain their programs. CCHA teams such as Ferris St., Lake Superior St., Bowling Green, that depend on ticket sales from bigger school opponents would be included in the scheduling arrangements with Big Ten teams like Mich. and Mich. St. to boost revenues. Big Ten tournament locations will most likely rotate as well.

Expansion is always a good thing for college hockey which currently resides in a niche media market nationwide. Other Big Ten schools will most likely consider a D1 hockey program once the BTHC is established. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern and Purdue don't have D1 programs, though they have club teams of varying levels of popularity. From a recruiting standpoint, Big Ten name recognition will also help draw top recruits into new and existing programs.

Much of the incentive to form a Big Ten Hockey Super Conference is revenue driven. It's no secret that the UMN Athetic Department needs cash. Expenses for major revenue generating sports such as hockey, football and basketball has more than doubled in some cases over the last 10 years. Television coverage and revenue from the Big Ten Network will exceed current FSN media revenues for participating schools and generally provide the public in new markets with more exposure to college hockey.

In fiscal year 2008, Minnesota reported a $2.3 million positive balance. But the departments financial success that year was not necessarily of its own making: 2008 was the first year of the Big Ten Network and also marked the beginning of a new, larger TV contract for the conference with ESPN and ABC.

According to nonprofit tax forms filed with the IRS, each Big Ten school received $18.8 million in revenue from the conference in 2008, a $4.8 million increase from the previous year. The distribution was vital in balancing the Gophers finances, said Associate Athletics Director Liz Eull, who is in charge of Minnesota athletics finances.

It's fair to say that without the Big Ten Network money, we might look very, very different today, Eull said. Because I don't know where we would have come up with another six-and-a-half million dollars to support the expenditures for the 25 teams that we currently have. I can't tell you what would have happened. I mean, I don't have a crystal ball, but I can't even begin to tell you where we would have gone for, at that time, almost 10 percent of our budget.

No problem. It's always fun to watch how much better Minnesota high school hockey is than Wisconsin's. :p;)

I used to coach in New Ulm, so it might have been better not to have watched that game. STA was really good. Hibbing has some really good skaters as well.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

STA was really good.
Most would say that they're a class above their competition. Conveniently for them, there is another class they can move to, but they happen to be massive ******* so they prefer to destroy the New Ulms of the state.

Well, let's be fair here. New Ulm was also REALLY bad. Weakest section in the State.

Yes, that is true, New Ulm is pretty bad, but that doesn't mean that STA actually belongs where they are. They're pathetic cowards, as far as I'm concerned.

The point of class A is to give the small guys a chance to make it to the big stage. They beat the teams on their schedule and made it to the tourney. They can't help the Southwestern part of the state is weak. Hopefully, they can play closer with Breck and go home with some pride. Have to feel a little bad for them to get beat this bad two years in a row.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

I'm not too familiar with the whole MSHSL for hockey, but I'm assuming that until the state high school league enforces which class these teams should be playing in this will be an issue.

Northeastern beats BU! WOOOOO!!!! (Don't tell Scarlet I cheered, she'll kill me.)

As bad as New Ulm is, they were Eau Claire Memorial's few losses during their regular season, and Eau Claire Memorial was one of Wisconsin's best high school teams this year. Just to put things into perspective.
