Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

No, the majority of the criticism is from anonymous, unnamed sources he attributes to being scouts. If you look at his Twitter timeline, you can see who he reached out to. Only former player is Budish, and no pro scouts.

Not to say he didn't reach out to other people by other means, but this guy works for CityPages. Let's be real. My guess is the stuff he attributes to being from "scouts" is second hand information from people who have had a bone to grind with Lucia for 15 years. Just because he isn't an alum.
So which is more likely, that this journalist found NHL scouts and Gopher alumni that really don't like the direction of the program, or that he based his article around second hand info?

The latter. Controversy sells.

No other DI Hockey program can boast this consistent fact... YOUR OWN MEDIA HATES YOU!!

Is that a fact? I'd like to see how you arrived at that decision. I don't know about other D1 programs and the media's response but with the exception of Patrick Reusse; the Strib, The Twin Cities, Fox Sports, and ESPN radio have all been generally very supportive of Gopher Hockey over the years.

It's most likely IMO that he found Gopher alumni who don't like Lucia who told him things like scouts think this and scouts have said this, which is why he didn't source those things. If he interviewed me I could have told him that I've talked to Wayne Gretzky and he thinks Lucia
is the greatest hockey coach to ever live.

I know it's a novel concept, but perhaps he could have interviewed Lucia or someone on the Gopher staff too. You know, get their perspective on "what's wrong" with the team they coach that has won more college hockey games than any other program in college hockey over the last 4 years. Perhaps they could have told him that they beat Penn State on Saturday, because the author clearly didn't watch.

But this was a hit piece, so he didn't.

Like I have time to read through all of the internet tears and self loathing on your thread. B1G weekend ahead with (19)UMTC v (54)MichSt, make sure you set your DVRs for another hotly contested battle with Sparty and tPride on Ice
I know, I know.....reading is hard.

You'll get it someday!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

I don't have an opinion on whether an NHL scout did or didn't directly make some of the comments listed in the article, but FWIW, it does seem that NHL scouts going on the record about College or Junior teams, etc. is heavily frowned upon by the NHL. Which is understandable. For example, Andy Johnson apparently had to stop commenting publicly once Central Scouting hired him. In other words, the lack of sourcing on the NHL scout comments doesn't seem to me to be indicative of anything at all, one way or the other.

Speaking of Andy, he probably takes hockey too seriously and has too much integrity (when it comes to hockey, at least) to do it, but if it were me, I'd throw MN under the bus just for fun. So even if it's all properly quoted, there's plenty of anti-gophers like me in the hockey world to produce these types of quotes from I'd think.

See you goofs next week.

Except you can see a whole list of people he reached out to on Twitter asking for a phone call, and no scouts were among them. There were, however, plenty of alum who don't like Lucia.

And calling the players "jerks" sounds like a scout? Come on. No one in their right mind or without an agenda believes this guy talked to NHL scouts.

Shouldn't you he in your thread spinning another yarn about why your program isn't a complete and utter disaster at the moment?

I think the article actually claimed it was a former player who made that comment, not a scout. The only reason I point that out is that when I first read the article it struck me as odd that a former MN player would claim MN players are arrogant little jerks.

My assumption, when I first read it, was that it was simply a misprint. He meant to write MN fans are arrogant little jerks. :p

You could be right. I'd have to go back and read, but have no interest in giving that clown any additional clicks. However, I do recall nearly everything I read that was unattributed was very unprofessional and didn't sound like something you'd hear from a professional in the business. Sounded more like stuff from people with an axe to grind.

And if it was scouts (which is doubtful), whomever pays them should re-evaluate who they're giving a paycheck to. I don't see teams rushing to get guys like Rau (4 yrs), Marshall (4 yrs), Bjugstad (3 yrs), Reilly (3 yrs), Skjei (3 yrs), etc... out of Lucia's system.

Nor do we have as many players being steered to the CHL as many programs do. Not saying that all this is indicitive of team decision as the players certainly have a say, but there certainly doesn't seem to be ANY evidence that NHL clubs don't like player development at UMN other than this clown's unattributed quotes and opposing fan's fairy tale stories.

BTW - Still waiting for Cory to grow the stones to discuss this on Twitter.

You'd think he'd want to defend his hard work that is being trashed.

Perhaps he's catching up on that PSU sweep of the Gophers on DVR from last weekend

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Great piece from CHN

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2016/01/15_commentary_lucia_criticism.php

The article in question, in the local publication called CityPages — "analyzing" the current so-called problems deemed rampant with Minnesota's hockey program right now — is filled with commentary so short-sighted and ignorant of the situation, that the only thing it proves is that "famous alums" are just as myopic, misguided and negatively emotional as the average "FIAR EVERYONE" fan.

The article also instantly ruins any credibility it tries to have on the basis of one comment alone: calling Minnesota's loss to Union in the 2014 national championship game the "biggest upset since the Miracle on Ice," and then dwelling on it and getting quotes from clueless alums talking about what an abomination it was (that abomination coming after a thrilling win in the national semis against rival North Dakota, by the way).

Just the first few paragraphs from the article, which blasts the idiots.
