Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Commentary from elsewhere:

I take the alumni criticism with a grain of salt. The M Club was pretty much against Lucia from the beginning. They were opposed to anyone who wasn't an alum being the coach. Not that some of their criticism isn't warranted, but the have never been in Lucia's corner.

When you call the loss to Union the biggest upset since the Miracle on Ice, you instantly throw your credibility out the window. And can someone remind me how many national titles Parise brought to North Dakota? Also would like to know how this unnamed alum knows that the current players are "arrogant little jerks."

Probably comes from the same place as the criticism that we lost to "terrible" teams like Harvard because they were awful in a game somebody watched 20 years ago. I've said it before and I'll say it again: there's plenty of blame to go around for the lack of success of late, but if these folks really did follow the team as much as they say they do aside from reading recaps and scores, they wouldn't believe a lot of these things they're saying.

Losing to Union the biggest upset since the Miracle on Ice!?? They were the top ranked team in the country! And laying the blame of the Big Ten conference at the hands of anyone at the University is questionable at best, this was not a choice.

The program is far from infallible, but come on.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

You are right, as usual, the Gophers do have a realistic chance to seep against Sparty at home. Just say'in that if the Gophers don't get a big enough lead when the game is on the line, watch out because as we've seen way too many times this season, a favorable outcome is never assured.

Oh, I think Y'all will sweep MSU. In-fact, I'd be surprised if you didn't. 1-12-1 in the last 14. 5-15-2 overall. NO, repeat, NO road wins. Four wins at home and one neutral site. Goals against is around 3.7. Goals for is at 2.5. Defense and offense are junk and not getting better. This is not the program it used to be.
Be careful, be very, very careful about hiring an Alum to be your Head Coach. In-fact, don't do it.

B1G - who in the heck gets riled up for Ohio State hockey? Michigan State? Michigan?

If the Gophers could fill their schedule with NoDak, Wisconsin, St. Cloud, Mankato, Bemidji and Duluth again, they'd have a full barn every night.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Over reaction. Somebody else said it. NCAA is mostly parity today. Just like the badgers, they keep beating their heads against the wall. NCAA champion is now basically a crap shoot......... oops, no offense BU :)

Then how does Nick Saban do it 4/7 years in football?

Disagree. Even at the tail end of the WCHA (for the Gophers) with said teams on the schedule, the attendance was still starting to dwindle. Not as bad as it is now, but it was on the downturn.

Last season's departing Gopher senior class scored more goals than any senior class in the NCAA last season, won the first two Big Ten Regular Season Championships, The Big Ten Tournament last season, four consecutive regular season championships including the last two years in the WCHA, four consecutive NCAA playoff appearances, and 2 Frozen Four appearances. Also over the last four years, Minnesota led the NCAA in total wins (105), winning percentage (.690) and fewest losses (43). Lastly, the Gophers led the nation in home wins (63), home winning percentage (.801) and fewest home losses (13).

Agreed, Minnesota is clearly going down the tubes

I don't think he would if most D1 players first played in "Junior A" football leagues for a year or two before going to college.

Well, if they do that, along with reducing the ticket prices to something that us lower/middle class folk can afford... that might help a whole lot more.

Ronnieb should have said NCAA HOCKEY. FB is different. Big difference being hockey has ~26 players on roster, plays about 23 of them and has 18 scholarships. FB has over 100 at big programs on roster, plays about 60-70 of them and has 85 schollies. Saban, et. al. can stash guys who won't play much for a couple years and have them on roster, can't do that in hockey. The main reason there is parity in hockey and not in FB. Drop the scholly number in FB to 50 and there would be parity in a few years.

Yes, thank you. NCAA HOCKEY is definitely unlike any of its sports counter parts.

Click back a page....

Like I have time to read through all of the internet tears and self loathing on your thread. B1G weekend ahead with (19)UMTC v (54)MichSt, make sure you set your DVRs for another hotly contested battle with Sparty and tPride on Ice

Yes you do. Even though we left the conference, your fanbase still seems obsessed with us.

If you read the article, you would see that most of the criticism in it is from former players and NHL scouts. Not sure how you can slide the blame to the author and fans that aren't connected to the program.

No, the majority of the criticism is from anonymous, unnamed sources he attributes to being scouts. If you look at his Twitter timeline, you can see who he reached out to. Only former player is Budish, and no pro scouts.

Not to say he didn't reach out to other people by other means, but this guy works for CityPages. Let's be real. My guess is the stuff he attributes to being from "scouts" is second hand information from people who have had a bone to grind with Lucia for 15 years. Just because he isn't an alum.

The fact that they have won the most games in college hockey, have four straight conference titles, and two Frozen Fours in the last four years has already been touched on, but there are far bigger reasons one should laugh at this article.

Calling the loss to Union the biggest upset since the Miracle on Ice? Really?

Saying the Gophers just got swept by Penn State when they blew them out 7-1 on Saturday? Is the author watching games in an alternate universe?

Including criticism from Oesicki in an article that blasts the Gophers for playing at the level of lowly programs like OSU? Didn't Mark get canned by OSU?

Including criticism from Hartzel on which players Don recruited when Hartzel himself recruited the Reillys, Isackson, and Rau when coaching the Stampede? Really Kevin. Doesn't have anything to do with your public disdain for a non-alum coaching the Gophers?

I could go on and on. The Gopher program is a magnet for this crap. It's either idiot fans from other schools with a bone to grind, numb skull Gopher fans who catch two games a year and think that entitles them to rip the team and player when they don't meet their unrealistic expectations, or some half wit journalist looking to create click bait because they're stuck writing for CityPages and their work doesn't get read.

Foolishly criticizing the winningest coach in college hockey who has made two Frozen Fours in a title game during that time is one thing, but publishing unsubstantiated nonsense (unattributed to a source I might add) about players being "jerks", etc.. crosses a line.

Agreed a poorly researched article, And it is true that it is not a new trend that gopher players are stars in it for themselves without the character to play well as a team. And, notwithstanding the fact that one can cherry pick history to make the gophers look like a top team ( past four years but not five and not this year of course). But above all, the most evergreen of all points the City Pages article makes, is that, YOUR OWN MEDIA CONTINUES TO HATE YOU!

No other DI Hockey program can boast this consistent fact... YOUR OWN MEDIA HATES YOU!! L - O - F#$cking L!!!

Cherry pick stats? Use the last 5, or this year, and the article is still a joke. Much like your comment that "our media" hates the Gophers. We've gor FIVE D1 teams in state, and not everyone who lives in the Twin Cities is a Gopher fan, Duluth is a UMD fan, St Cloud is an SCSU fan, etc...

Tally another in the brain dead opposing fan with an axe to grind column. The only LOL is your idea that the media should be credentialed chearleaders. Are you that fragile?

Our own media knows that if they "pick" on the Gophers, they will have rabid fans calling them out. Which means they read the article/heard the podcast. Which means audience, and that is the main goal. Simple marketing.
