Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Lineup changes are frequently made at any level, but isn't it usually more of a insert player "A" in to line 3 or defensive pairing "B" as opposed to re-vamping entire lines and pairings?

Wouldn't you say most of the recent line shuffling has been due to (a) illness (b) injuries and (c) World Juniors? Other than these causes, there's also that old "what's the definition of insanity" thing.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Last year our 4th line was much better with Serratore Guertler and Lettieri playing on it quite a bit. Our D play with Holl and Parenteau in the mix was better too, also Condon hustled and backchecked which helped the D as well.

Need some guys to start getting dirty.

Bristedt has been on a couple of different lines. C Reilly was on the third and then on the first line. Isackson played on the fourth and first. Cammy was on the first and second. Boyd has played on a couple of different lines. Warning has been on the first, second and third. This all in the last 10 games.

Nobody ever said this is why were losing. But it would be a mistake to continue this practice as the team needs to gel if we want any kind of postseason.

Serratore played pretty much exclusively on the 3rd line with Boyd and Ambroz.

I disagree that the 4th line was better last year. For the majority of the season, it consisted of Guertler - Lettieri - C Reilly/Isackson/Michaelson. They were a non-factor over the course of the last 4-6 weeks of the season.
I certainly agree that our D was better with Holl and Parenteau. Those guys have been sorely missed.

I think D2D is right to point out that the majority of changes this season have been due to injuries and absences. I have no issue really with the overall amount of change. What I was originally trying to get at was the decision for the specific Saturday night game at Yost. Given the circumstances and the opposition, it just didn't make sense to me to insert 2 freshman who are both arguably at the bottom of the totem pole defensively out of your entire corp.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Ok 3rd line, but my point remains, they were better than this year because of the hustle and hard backchecking of some of the players who are no longer with the team.

Guertler Lettieri C Reilly are better than what we have now for a 4th line, at least they kept us even.

You need to take the blinders off.
C Reilly had 4 total pts (2,2) in the last 21 games of the season last year. In 10 of the last 11 he had 0 pts.
Guertler scored 2 goals in 24 games last year.
Lettieri is still on the line.

Sometimes I wonder if people even watch the games. That 4th line this year has done a pretty good job in terms of zone-by-zone time and has given up almost no goals against. I know the blind hatred for a couple players runs strong, but it is truly baffling to me how some folks just refuse to acknowledge when those players do good things. And I'm not just talking statistically. If you remove the bias when you watch you will see guys like Isackson and Michaelson throwing their bodies around, you'll see them getting in hard on the forcheck, and you will see them get on their horse when the play turns. You just have to open your eyes. They've been doing it.

Not one pro, college and high school coach I've ever seen employs that POV in practice.

Oh, please. Lines get jumbled all the time. Injury, illness, things aren't clicking coaches shake things up. Lucia has been doing this for years. Mike Yeo is doing it with the Wild.

5mn_Major, you made me curious so I went back and looked at the line charts I've kept - 6 of the 8 home games the Gophs have played so far. Here are the forward line combinations from those 6 games:

1st Line
10/25 18-07-24 (Bemidji State)
11/07 18-07-24 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/09 18-07-24 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/14 18-07-24 (MN-Duluth) – 22 out with injury
01/02 11-07-21 (Merrimack) – 18 & 24 out for World Juniors
01/03 11-07-21 (RIT) – 18 out for World Juniors
Summary: Rau has centered the 1st Line all 6 of these games, with Bristedt and Fasching on wing until the World Juniors, when Warning & C. Reilly were moved up from the 2nd Line.

2nd Line
10/25 11-25-13 (Bemidji State)
11/07 11-25-13 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/09 11-25-13 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/14 11-25-13 (MN-Duluth) – 22 out with injury
01/02 13-25-19 (Merrimack) – 18 & 24 out for World Juniors
01/03 13-25-24 (RIT) ) – 18 out for World Juniors
Summary: Kloos has centered the 2nd line for all 6 of these games, with Warning and Cammarata at wing until the World Juniors, when Cammarata was switched from RW to LW.

3rd Line
10/25 21-22-17 (Bemidji State)
11/07 21-19-17 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/09 21-19-17 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/14 21-26-17 (MN-Duluth) – 22 out with injury
01/02 15-22-17 (Merrimack) – 18 & 24 out for World Juniors
01/03 15-22-17 (RIT) ) – 18 out for World Juniors
Summary: Ambroz has been the 3rd line constant over these 6 games, at RW. Boyd was out of the lineup due to injury from 11/1 to 12/5.

4th Line
10/25 09-26-19 (Bemidji State)
11/07 15-26-09 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/09 15-26-09 (Notre Dame) – 22 out with injury
11/14 29-15-09 (MN-Duluth) – 22 out with injury
01/02 29-26-09 (Merrimack) – 18 & 24 out for World Juniors
01/03 26-19- -- (RIT) – 18 out for World Juniors; 9 out of the lineup (?)
Summary: Isackson has centered the 4th line for all but one of these 6 games, when he was moved up to 3rd Line center to replace the injured Boyd on the 3rd line. R. Reilly had played wing on the 4th line for 5 of these 6 games, but has not been in lineup since the Jan. 2nd game against Merrimack (not sure if he’s been injured or not).

Overall Summary: Losses due to injury and World Juniors have disrupted all four lines, but it would appear that the coaches have tried to keep the disruption to a minimum.

P.S. I very well may have missed an injury or illness or two, but can't recall the specifics. Also, feel free to add in more games from collegestats.com!

Nice work D2D.

You make think me obstinant but I think that's still a bit of a glass is half full perspective. After finding a simple replacement for Boyd, there was only one weekend of external disruption. Yet including the U18 game, I believe Warning, Bristedt, C Reilly, Cammy and/or Isackson have all been scheduled on the first line.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Line changes are not what ails this team. I can guarantee you that.

You are correct other than Isackson, who has yet to play a game on the 1st line. For all 18 games but not including the U18 exhibtion, using collegehockeystats.net, here are the wings that have played with Rau, and how many times:

LW
Bristedt - 7 (but not since Nov. 14th)
Warning - 5
C. Reilly - 4
Cammy - 2 (but not since Nov. 29th)

RW
Fasching - 16
C. Reilly - 2 (once when filling in for Fasching when he was out)

Question for fans: Which player would best complete that line at LW the rest of the way?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I would add one more point.

We had a fairly messy fall at D with players being injured and rotating freshmen in and out. All understandable. We finally got everyone back and healthy. So for arguably the most important series of the regular season, M Reilly and Brod are paired up which by definition changes two of the three pairs of D. Hard to say why. But the result? The team went from setting up 8 of the most recent 9 goals prior to the series...to pretty much a significant drop in D assists, a GA blowout and what most here seem to agree on as the worst weekend of the year for our D corp. Of course there are many factors that go into that result, but the decision and reversal in stats is in stark contrast.

Nice stats man. Nothing for the U18 game?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I pretty much ignore the exhibitions because the coaches use these as opportunities to play everyone and experiment with different combinations. For example, Mitch Rogge and Robin Höglund each got plenty of ice time, and Nick Lehr played all 63+ minutes in goal. Still, no excuses as it was embarrassing to lose those U18 kids, talented as they may be (if Auston Matthhews has had a better game all year, I would like to see the video).
