Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Agree on Warning. Hopefully he keeps that up.

Forgot, didn't the guy Hoglund creamed before getting 2 for interference just play the puck? Seemed like a McAlpine penalty. Hit the guy hard enough that the refs figure it must be a penalty. (never did watch the replay though).

Radio said it was a borderline, but justifiable, penalty.

I would much rather watch us play SCSU than play Penn State, Ohio State, Mich State, but that's me.

Michigan I like watching and Sconny (even though they play such a boring style) it's always fun to beat them.

Sure but it still feels like a NC game basically no urgency.

Guess they aren't going undefeated this year.....

Looking at the results of the Top 10 teams this weekend, nobody stands out with the possible exception of No. 8 Lowell which swept unranked UNH. Maybe the biggest surprise was unranked Rensselaer sweeping No. 2 Union. No. 3 UND needed OT to beat a bad Air Force team; No. 4 Colgate split with unranked Mercyhurst; No. 5 BC split with No. 11 Denver and No. 6 BU split with No. 9 Providence. So at this stage of the season everybody's proving to be very beatable.

When I first saw Hoglund's hit and saw the ref's hand go up I thought they were going to call boarding, as it looked like he made contact about 3 feet from the boards.

As well as the Gophers have been playing this year (seems--I haven't watched them), SCSU must have some real potential.

They have a good squad with a few guys who can score to make it interesting even if the rest of the team is outplayed. MN didn't play their best game on Friday and SCSU won a lot of battles. Both nights, SCSU just seemed to bury a higher percentage of their opportunities. On Sat., MN looked better and outshot them something like 35-14 but the game still went to overtime. SCSU doesn't seem to have the depth the Gophs have, but the top end is very good and they play a disciplined game making it tough to get the puck in close.

Wasn't really expecting undefeated season. Just with the pre-season build-up/anticipation, we somewhat convinced ourselves this team would be dominant. Just got a dose of reality on Friday. This is hockey and it is being played by college kids. But as much as I know it is better to build to your best hockey at the end of the year, it is tough to not want them clicking on all cylinders now.

Very similar to the thoughts I had.
I would add I thought Warning seemed more involved, he was the invisible man on Friday night.

Other point I forgot: Did FSN have a new cameraman that hadn't watched hockey before? Completely lost the puck about 5 times!

Well said - couldn't agree more. Maybe it's my imagination but it seems like it's much more difficult these days for any team to be truly "dominant" on a consistent basis, no matter how "talent laden" their roster is supposed to be. Less talented teams seem to have more success than years past by sticking to well-designed defensive schemes, creating turnovers and then capitalizing on the few great chances they do get. Not saying that was the case this past weekend as St. Cloud IS very talented. These are just my observations in general.

Haven't been there for a few days, what changes?

Everything. Right now, the old Portal setup is no more. It's like a regular message board. And currently, it doesn't take you to the newest unread message, even if you've clocked into that particular thread. I'm feeling really lost right now in navigation. :(

I do love how we are using this message board to talk about our "real" message board. :)

2nd page isn't appropriate for Gopher thread.

While he has shown a few flashes, am still waiting for a breakout game for Bridstedt.

I would agree, but bear in mind he's a freshman and is still adjusting to a different style of play. My guess is that by the second half he will have made the adjustment and will be more consistently excellent than he has been in his first few games.

Yes, but Kloos and others didn't need several games to stand out last year and other players in other years. And while the game is different style for him, it is still hockey and overall skill should show. high quality players regularly play international tourney's etc, and they have to adjust to new teams and styles pretty quickly or the tourney would be over before they figure it out. Time will tell.

We'll see where Lucia puts him tonight. If he's out there with Rau and Fasching again that's a pretty clear sign that Lucia likes what he's seen so far.

"The first month of the season has been more difficult than Bristedt thought it would be. Adapting to a different style of play he described as more “north-south” compared to the European “east-west” style has taken longer than he expected."

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Forgot to ask before, but did anyone have a problem with the image on TV this weekend? I had it on HD channel (Sunday was the day, I think) and at times the image was very poor, like it was pixellated. Did anyone else notice this, or was it just my provider?
