Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Just doing some quick math/projection and it looks like our needs for future classes are something close to follows (Just my best guess at projections):

2015 Class: Filled
2016 Class: Filled
2017 Class: Need 1-2 more forwards and 0-3 more defensemen
2018 Class: Need 1-4 more forwards, 0-4 more defensemen, and 1 goalie

To look at it another way....

(1) 2017 Forward
(1) 2017/18 Forward
(3) 2017/18 Defensemen
(1) 2018 Forward
(2) 2018/19 Forwards
(1) 2018/19 Defensemen
(1) 2018 Goalie

Lose Reilly, Skjei, and Marshall. Bring in Seeler and (maybe) Sadek. Who else?

I have Rossini, but that's just my best guess.

Probably better option would be to find another late bloomer, depth guy from the USHL for next season now that I think about it more.

Bonin (or anyone else who'd like to provide feedback), was wondering if you could take a look at this. Made some changes based on your feedback and created a seperate matrix to illustrate recruiting needs a little more clearly.

<a href="http://i57.tinypic.com/2rr7z4n.jpg">Updated Recruiting Matrix</a>

<a href="http://i60.tinypic.com/2nibars.jpg">Recruiting Needs Matrix</a>

Note: It is difficult to know whether the coaching staff will choose to carry 14 or 15 forwards and/or 7 or 8 defensemen on a year-to-year basis, so I just made the assumption we'll try and carry 14 forwards and 8 defensmen (when possible) as ai believe this affords us more depth at all positions.

Also, I am not going to even pretend to know where we stand on a year-to-year basis in terms of scholarship dollars, so I am not going to try and project what roles the Gophers will be recruiting for each season. However, any feedback to assist with that would be welcome :)

So, based on my amateur projections, here is where I think we might stand in terms of needs for future classes:

2015 Class: Need 1 defensemen (perhaps two, but I'll just say they bring Sadek in)
2016 Class: Filled
2017 Class: Need two forwards and two 2017/18 defensemen (arrival dependent upon Glover, Collins, Johnson departures)
2018 Class: Need 1 2018 forward and a 2018/19 forward (depending on Ryan Norman departure) and a 2018/19 defensemen (depending on Ryan Lindgren departure)
2019 Class: Need 5 2019 forwards, 3 2019/20 forwards (depending on McManus, Mittlstadt, Reedy departures), 2 2019 defensemen, and a 2019/20 defensemen (depending on Maniscalco departure).

Awesome, mnstateOfhockey! Thanks for doing this!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

You're missing Mitch Rogge, who will likely be a sophomore next year and our "15th forward" for the foreseeable future. It's very doubtful Rem Pitlick comes next year as he's so tiny. Projecting early departures is basically impossible this far out. At this point I'm not so sure Brodzinski and/or Bischoff leave early. I also doubt Seeler would transfer to only play one year.

Next year may be rough up front, but I'll start to judge that after the incoming freshmen are about 2/3 of the way through their seasons.

Thanks, completely forgot about Rogge. I know Pitlick is small, but I don't know that he's guaranteed to get a whole lot larger.

Agree on Brodzinski, Bischoff, and Seeler, but after the junior season for drafted players, you kinda have to have a contingency plan in place. That's why I have swing recruits listed for those seasons. At least that was my thinking, right or wrong.

Good feedback, and I completely agree on projecting far out. Kind of helps me visualize on what we may be looking to fill though, even if it isn't completely accurate. Thanks for taking the time to respond :)

“A lot of people think captain is given out to your best players, and I think that is kind of a misunderstanding,” senior forward Travis Boyd said. “I think having [Ambroz and Marshall] be in other roles shows that to be a leader you don’t need to be the best guy out there. They fill roles on our team, and without those roles being filled we wouldn’t be anywhere close to as good as where we are.”

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Didn't look like #1 last night. JBSU played well as always, but Gophs should still look like the better team. Goph's need to pick it up today. It is early, but with the speed and skill they have, they should be able to put on a little stronger forecheck for longer stretches. Don't expect their best hockey now, but would like to see stretches of domination. Losing a guy like Serratore seems to take a little heart out of the team. Sort of like early season the year after Hanson left.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

All these non-conference games at times are boring the Big Ten season can't get here fast enough.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I would much rather watch us play SCSU than play Penn State, Ohio State, Mich State, but that's me.

Michigan I like watching and Sconny (even though they play such a boring style) it's always fun to beat them.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Random thoughts from tonight: Marshall had a good night, making a couple good plays (break up 1 on 1 and long outlet, pressuring in the corner in OT) that led to goals.

Hope Skjei isn't out too long. seems like he was stepping up to be a leader and was forcing the play at times. They looked better today than last night.
Game wasn't as close as score, I thought. I still think they can generate more offense and make it harder for the opponent to get out of their zone, although they bottled BJSU up pretty well at times.
Glad to see Kloos get the Hatty. Nice play by Cammerata to dig it out and make that pass.
And finally, despite his other shortfalls, Isaacson is pretty good at coming away from the boards with the puck. Oh, and Brodzinski needs to stop making those freshman mistakes, coughing the puck up right in front of the net. Someone point out to him he is a sophomore.
Guess they aren't going undefeated this year.....

Very similar to the thoughts I had.
I would add I thought Warning seemed more involved, he was the invisible man on Friday night.

Agree on Warning. Hopefully he keeps that up.

Forgot, didn't the guy Hoglund creamed before getting 2 for interference just play the puck? Seemed like a McAlpine penalty. Hit the guy hard enough that the refs figure it must be a penalty. (never did watch the replay though).
