I don't think we're "in trouble" if Schierhorn doesn't start every game. Lucia already stated this summer the job in net is wide open and he'll go with a rotation. That may continue into the second half if Kautz or Lehr perform exceptionally well. I think we may see some surprises in the line rotations this season. Darian Romanko is my pick as a dark horse that could surprise some fans with his on ice work ethic.
Watched Sioux City Musketeers vs. Omaha Lancers last Sat. eve. The systems they run in the USHL (at least with these two teams) are clearly different than what Lucia and MG are running. Omaha has a couple upcoming Gopher recruits: McManus and Fallstrom, but unfortunately Ryan Zuhlsdorf who is the captain for the Muskies this season did not play. A friend of mine who is the Exec. VP for the Muskies told me he suffered a severe concussion on a cheap hit playing against Swiss teams in Switzerland this summer. His return is uncertain.
I like the new talent rich recruits for the Gophers this season, but where they land in the lineup will depend on adapting to Lucia's systems and who works the hardest.

Good news for Gopher fans on Zuhlsdorf - In the lineup for today's pre-season game against Cedar Rapids. Good news for Musketeer fans, too, as Zuhlsdorf played a ton of minutes last year for us in all situations, and is one of our few returning players. Good kid, hard worker.

The wait is almost over... In just over two weeks (17 days), the Minnesota Golden Gophers take to the ice on Oct. 10 against the Vermont Catamounts at Mariucci for the Hall of Fame game to open the 2015-16 season.
The Hockey East Coaches poll just came out and Vermont was slotted at 8th. This promises to be a more formidable challenge though than some of the cupcake Canada teams that have come into MN as lambs for the slaughter for opening exhibitions in the past. This will be a good chance to see some of the new youngbloods on the Gophers play against an HE team that went 22-15-4 overall and reached the Hockey East semifinals after defeating Maine and Boston College in their playoff series. Go Gophers! Rah!

They return 66% of their point scoring and 76% of their goal scoring, but there are often loads of confounds in that type of correlational analysis. Guess is that Kloos is the only first team preseason All Big Ten player. Michigan won't get em all, but they've got Motte, Compher, and Werenski all as potential.
If there was a second team, I think you would see Fasching and possibly Brodzinski.

Also, probably the toughest non conference schedule in the country.
A veteran UMD, always tough SCSU, MSU (picked top of WCHA), another game against SCSU/MSU, at Notre Dame, Bemidji (picked in top half of WCHA), Vermont as discussed, perhaps Ferris St, and a Northeastern (picked in top half of HEA). Any of the teams could be top 10 when we play them...and many if not all have the dates they play Minnesota circled. A single game against UConn is the only NC opponent with a potential for a middle PWR or lower.

Don't see Brodzinski, unless he suddenly stops making mistakes. While Brodz has good offensive skills, Bischoff is a better all around player imo. I think Fasching has plenty of potential to have a big season.

Kloos would have to tally somewhere near 50 pts. to be considered for the All B1G first team. He was 13-19-32 last season. With a much as Rau (20-21-41) and Boyd (19-22-41) meant to the Gopher's success last season, they made the second team with Wilcox.
Fasching is a bit of an enigma for me. As a power forward he's got good net presence and physicality, but his stick and agility skills are moderate and he's prone to scoring droughts. He's going to be an important "go to" guy for the Gophers, but he'd have to excel well beyond his previous seasons to make the B1G second team.
I would expect MG to turn Brodzinski loose in some of the offensive D sets to fill in for some of the offense left by Reilly's departure. He's got a laser of a shot and I think we'll see some improvement in his full ice vision and positioning. All B1G second team? Some potential there, but a long shot IMO.
I don't see a lot of "star power" on the 2015-16 Gopher team and I don't have them repeating for the B1G title this season. Michigan will be tough to beat.

No big predictions there. I would be surprised if anybody not named Red picks Michigan anywhere below first.

Some might place Sparty at 2nd considering Hildebrand (SR) will most likely be the top goalie in the B1G and they have the smallest FR class which means they return most of their scoring prowess with a very balanced offensive and physical attack. They split with Mich. and went 1-2-1 against the Gophers.
Goodwin benefited last season by playing with Bailey and Holstrom for the bulk of his sophomore campaign, which elevated his ceiling with a 34-point run in 2014-15. Now that they're gone he'll most likely be paired with senior Eric Scheid...totally different storyline.
Not saying Kloos doesn't have a chance, but he's not a multifaceted player like Kyle Rau was either. It depends on who his linemates are...Fasching and ? (hopefully not Cammarata).

I prefer Bischoff as #1 PP QB as well.
