Minnesota Gophers 2024-25

and if you all keep trying to string her along with a promise of a new arena every few years, she might be departing from OSU's staff too.

Yeah to replace Frosty. Personally I rather just see everybody stay where they're at right now. I think everything's going just fine.

I am thinking if Wisconsin wins NCAA this year MJ retires and everybody won't stay where they are right now. ;)

I'm gonna get killed for this (probably correctly) but I prefer Darwitz.

I'll turn it around on you...Do you think there aren't recruiting mistakes? Because the way YOU ask this it sure gives me vibes that you don't.

Nope, I'm asking completely sincerely. I don't follow recruiting closely at all.

Ok, I definitely misread that...

I'll just highlight last years freshmen class. It wasn't very good. You only got contributions from Emma Kreisz and Ava Lindsay with 25 and 24 points respectively but only 4 points from the rest of the class (those were from Lauren O'Hara). Ely Klepinger played some games but was, at best, given spot duty. Josie Hemp and Isa Goettl just didn't play and wound up transferring out in the off season.

No sugar coating it, Josie Hemp, Ely Klepinger, and Isa Goetll were mistakes, Not really a fan of Lauran O'Hara's game but she at least saw more ice time than the others and did appear to get better as the year went along.

If you really want to get analytical about this, you would need to look at each recruit in context. Isa Goettl was a very late commit, IIRC. I can't speak to what she was/wasn't offered, nor what role she was expected to fill. Sort of like some goalies are on a team's roster for practice and emergency depth, there are skaters down the depth chart filling similar roles. At least prior to the portal, there would be a point where you either add a player who may not dress much or you don't add anyone, because all of the impact recruits are gone.

Like others, I don't know enough about recruits to dive too deep. Plus, it gets difficult to be a supporter of a team while dissing players still on the roster to the extent that one concludes that they shouldn't be here.

I'm a nerd and was curious so I looked at the last five freshman classes. As ARM says, there's levels of context beyond the statistics, and it doesn't fill the negative space of who didn't go to Minnesota. (The Vivian Jungels/Claire Enright double decommit looms large over the 2022-2023 class in that sense.)

Stats do not include this season.

Definitely not great...one minor addition in that Sadie Lindsay transferred as well from the 2021 class. Also highlighted the Tella Jungels entry on the list. She should have never been offered a scholarship but I guess that was thought to be how they were going to land Vivian.

Welcome to the apathy...

The Sinner poster laid it out very well. Right there in black and white. Not much need for getting too analytical about it. Plus the brain trust tells you all you need to know about the state of recruiting the last few years by how they handle the roster. Quite a few players that just don't see much, if any ice time over the last few years.

Welcome to the apathy...
The mission for this team is clear: fight against overwhelming odds to somehow find a way to pass St. Thomas in the standings. Based on H2H results versus the Mavs, this is likely too big of an ask, but let's set some high goals. Yesterday's game had just become 2-2 by the time I started watching, so maybe I missed some stellar play that would completely change my thinking (or not). The run of play in OT didn't really suggest that a Gopher goal was imminent, and Hemp looked about as impressed by the OT win as I was. On the bright side, they did preserve their streak of Dan never seeing them lose in Mankato, so there's that. The ability to pass the puck to a teammate, covering a player in your defensive zone ... maybe just pick one aspect of the game and try to find a way to improve at that. It's nice that they have a stretch of series after the bye that goes UMD, SCSU, St. Thomas. It might be the perfect formula to ramp up the apathy.

Man, I will give you credit. You at least still post about the tunnelers even though it is laced with sarcasm (which I like by the way) as a way to deal with what you saw and/or did not see. Stellar play was hard to find yesterday... Just simple things like completing a pass to your teammate or even more importantly receiving said pass without flubbing it up was painfully difficult.

There seems to be something broken with #31 in net. Just seems like it is inevitable that panic sets in and there is a scramble and next thing you know, the puck is in the net. It looks like the confidence is shot. Maybe just go with #56?

I actually enjoyed the Friday late afternoon game. Some other players than usual got on the score sheet, I thought it was pretty good. Unfortunately I was in the presence of the smallest crowd I can recall in Ridder.

The next day on the stream the Mankato guy pronounced that they had a very nice crowd perhaps made possible by lots of Gopher fans making the drive down to see their team.

So, horribly disappointing tiny crowd in Minneapolis, very satisfying large crowd in Mankato.

Box score announced attendance:
Minneapolis 1,163
Mankato 427

Did BC actually sweep Clarkson?

The phrase "fighting the puck" definitely comes to mind.

Must have counted people who might have attended had the game not been played on a weekday afternoon.

Hope reggie is okay.

Attendance figures at Ridder are based on ticket scans at the door, so I'd believe there were actually that many people in there. I am still utterly baffled that they had the game start at 5 PM on a Friday with a men's game starting 30 minutes later, the same night as the homecoming parade. I know a lot of my coworkers who I'd normally see at Ridder were holding off because of the mess of getting to campus. Can't blame them necessarily. Neither the women's or men's games were on BTN or Fox 9, it wasn't a TV scheduling issue. I can't imagine what the reasoning for not having the games on Sunday was, except maybe alumni who'd be leaving Sunday from homecoming.

MTBC's Gopher history goes back a good while, so if he says it was the smallest he's seen, I know he's seen far fewer than 1,163. Some of those WCHA quarterfinal crowds were pretty sparse in the days when they weren't included in the season ticket packages, because there aren't any youth groups or other type of promotions.

WCHA quarterfinal tickets are included in a season ticket package at Ridder? Boy, not at LaBahn.

I mean sure, it's likely the game will get played. But just assuming so sure is tempting fate.

That's my recollection, but consider the source on that one. Back when I had season tickets, I remember like they weren't, and then they were added at some point. It wasn't like it was a guaranteed thing -- more like, "Purchase of season ticket includes complimentary tickets to any first-round WCHA playoff games." There were years were there wasn't a quarterfinal, either because of the playoff format, or later, because UND had decided women's hockey wasn't worth their time and the league champ drew "Bye."

If someone comes back with "ARM doesn't know what he's talking about," don't be shocked!

So what you're saying is one of the perks of writing for USCHO was/is you don't have to actually buy your own tickets.

:p

And our season tickets are still pretty cheap. $79 for general admission, $99 for reserved chairbacks, $199 for the rarefied air of the club area. Though they do get free soda and snacks up there.

Everyone can rest assured that while I prefer being on the glass in the corner in my general admission seat, I more than make up the difference of my university faculty/staff discount with payroll deduction to the athletics department.

Primerano out?

Was not in either game. Did Canada have their rivalry team get together early otherwise I don't know why? Also didn't see Vetter or Kaiser this weekend. However, the tunneler brain trust did put Sophia Johnson out for the last few minutes of today's game.

It was nice of the tunnelers to play a period of hockey (the first) in each game this weekend. It allowed them to coast the other two periods of each game.
