Minnesota Gophers 2024-25

Couple of things, UST broadcast in the first period had a camera shot of Coach May and identified it as Frost and went on and on about Frost. Frost is not at the game Reminds me of something similar several years ago at Saint Cloud when the broadcast focused on veteran assistant coach Tom Osiecki and assumed that the older guy must be the head coach. The broadcast identified Coach O as Frost and went on and on about Frost.

The broadcast has so far failed to notice that Lindsay for Saint Thomas and Lindsay for Minnesota who have numerous times been out on the ice opposing each are, of course, sisters.

That was interesting...Wonder if Frost wasn't on the bench tonight because he was sick?

If the tommy bahamas want to resort to to the rough stuff then I have no problem with the tunnelers trying to score as many goals right up to the final whistle which they did tonight.

I really didn't want to drive to Lakeville so I was very pleased to discover the game on BTN+. The game announcers (from Eagan) mentioned several times that the arena in Lakeville was about 25 minutes south of the University campus. I live north of the campus so my ordinary 15 or so minute drive to the game would have been at least 40 to a what they described as a packed parking lot and a pretty full arena. Kudos to those who committed and attended and I saw some familiar faces in the during the game crowd shots but taking the trip would have meant at least an extra hour on the freeway and I don't feel bad at all about not competing with the folks from the south metro for a seat at a Gopher game.

And from what I could see on TV (as always, not very much) they got a pretty good show.

Bemidji again this season plays pack it in on defense and hope for a break and they got one right away with a Gopher muff at the offensive zone blue line leading to a loose puck sliding into the Gopher zone with no Gophers back but two Beavers in hot pursuit. Clark came out and tried to play the puck to a safe area but when goalies are out there trying to play hockey against forwards the results usually favor the forwards and that is what happened this time. Very early on 1-0 BSU.

But that was about it for the Beavs.

Bemidji played with fire particularly through the second period when they very consistently dropped all five skaters below the dots to neutralize the Gophers fairly obvious skill advantage at forward. The direct result was that the Gopher points were always, always uncovered. The Gophers were consistently able to hold the zone and continue to apply pressure. Bemidji blocked a lot of shots and maybe could have gotten away with what they were doing if they could have gotten another against the run of play goal, but they could not.

Bemidji did what they could and hung around to make things interesting but Minnesota was better.

4-1, the last goal an empty netter when Abbey Murphy passed up a shot where she surely would have scored to boost the puck forward to Natalie Mlynkova so that the Vermont transfer could complete a hat trick.

Very pleased to discover the game on BTN+. Very pleased to have the season resume.

That was nice to see #18 not be selfish and allow #96 to get the hat trick on the empty netter.

Hasse arena was full to the gills...

Is the Hasse rink/building the same size as Those Who Shalt Not Be Named's building?

Little Ms Sassy Pants is growing up. Sad for the rest of us but good you the Tunnelers.

Haase Arena is much bigger and much nicer. It has seats only on one side but those seats are permanent, not temporary aluminum mini-stands, and they are many more of them.

There at least a dozen high school arenas in the Twin Cities suburbs that Those staff should be required to tour so that they can begin to understand how truly shameful their building is for a national championship team to have to call home.

Among them is the building where Stillwater Area plays their home games and I wonder how TWSNBN's prize Minnesota freshman from Stillwater feels about skating out into a building suitable for practice but which should never be hosting Division I games.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The first period I sat behind some Bemidji parents. With a goalie giveaway just over a minute in, they were ecstatic. I saw them texting about hoping for a miracle, which, sad for them, did not happen. The second Gopher goal was just plain bad luck that Filippova couldn't cover up the puck in time. On the third Gopher goal, I am sure that the puck deflected off a Beaver player protecting the goalie.
As noted, the arena was packed, with lots of youngsters in attendance. Very exciting to see. Really smart of the Hall of Fame committee to put the games in these local hockey hot spots.

As MBTC mentioned, Hasse is bigger. Also, the suburb of Lakeville has two arenas that are better than what TWSNBN has for a so called facility. Hasse and Ames arenas.

Here is a web link for the rinks and if you scroll down on the page just a bit you can see a photo gallery of each facility. Really most Metro and out-state community and high school arena's are better than slOwSU's.

The tunnelers are playing a color so...

But methinks a 4-0 lead after the first period is because of some sub-par goaltending from said color.

Likely so, but at least they are managing to put some shots on frame, rather than the propensity to refuse to hit visible twine. Now 7-1 after two.

I dunno, for a 9-1 game it was kinda entertaining.

Brown came out feisty and even after a quick 2-0 their demeanor was still we can do this.

Obviously they could not but to their credit they never quit, they scrambled and tried.

Long ago after a Macalester College basketball loss to IIRC Gustavus, Macalester coach Doug Bolstorff is said to have reacted in the post game hand shake line to the Gustavus coach by saying, "Too many, too good." That about covers it for Brown v. Minnesota today.

It was almost like...The tunnelers decided to play a cardboard cutout in net against PSU. It was like watching a reincarnation of Sidney Peters in net when she would go through stretches where she couldn't stop a beachball.

That is the type of game where you take a fanbase that is already apathetic and really cement the apathy. Great for recruiting as well.

Why didn't Frosty put Skyler in at some point?

It isn't easy to yield 4 goals on 6 shots, as usually, the opposition will manage to hit you a few more times. I don't see much point in dumping on a first-year goalie who has, for the most part, performed at or above expectations.

Instead, I'll focus on a bigger trend that is more troubling. During Frost's tenure, the tendency has been to underschedule, rather than overschedule, when it comes to NC games. If you do that, you have to win them. Especially, you have to be able to identify the game(s) that your team most needs to win and win those. Instead, the Gophers seem to approach these games as though they still think they are the team of 10 years ago. If there are going to be two teams in their league that they don't ever plan on defeating, then they should be very ready to go when playing other NCAA Tournament teams. Instead, there are too many times when they just can't be bothered. Given this has gone on for years through many rosters and assistants, I guess it falls on the person in charge.

Apathetic? Guilty as charged. I didn't plan to be. I'm probably just spoiled, but I remember a time when the effort was far more consistent.

Yes, I did notice the four goals in six shots. However, if you are only going to score two, you pretty much have to play perfect. PSU checked the boxes on blocks, 14, and a goalie save percentage near .95. After the break, it can be challenging for teams, I'm sure Minnesota will right the ship.

No disrepect to PSU as they looked good out there and their goalie came to play. Their motivation level far exceeded the Tunnelers, that's for sure.

3 goals on the first 3 shots and I thought is was 4 goals on the first 5 shots. Certainly an unfortunate play with on own goal on the first but the next two...Yikes.
