Minnesota Gophers 2021-2022

My BIG+ stream ran out but it appears that the Gophers completed the sweep against St. Thomas with an 8-2 win. Abigail Boreen with the hat trick.

At the tailed of the game, one of the St. Thomas players appeared to catch Katie Skaja with a stick around the throat area. She retaliated by pulling down the nearest Tommie skater, who had nothing to do with the action. Penalty of course, but a bad way to end what should have been a routine game.

Commenting here in the Gopher thread about comments by D2D and ARM over in the WCHA thread:

Personally I think MWethington and APotomak are both great players fulfilling important roles on the team as defined by the coaching staff and the needs of the team. I agree that they both have the puck a lot but I think that you want your best players to have the puck a lot and these two when on the ice are often the best players on the ice. Taylor Heise has the puck a lot and I have yet to see anyone on here complaining about THAT.

That was Frenzy, not D2D. Heise passes the puck, that’s why people don’t complain about her possessing it. Potomak has become one of my least favorite highly skilled players to watch, I think. Her aversion to passing is so extreme. I don’t think she fulfills her role, because her effectiveness is so far below her high skill level.

I think we will need her at the end. I hope she helps us pull it off.

Apologies to D2D, it was 5holeFrenzy. Nothing you said changed anything about my opinion. APot is my second favorite Potomak but one of my favorite players on this year's team.

Exactly. The problem isn't her ability, it is what she is able to accomplish in relation to her ability. When she arrived, I would never have believed that she'd be this deep into her career and still looking for her 100th point. She has hands like Krissy Wendell. However, she holds the puck so long that she draws so much attention from the defense. Think of the goals she scores. They don't result from plays where she spends 15 seconds holding the puck and dangling all over the ice. IMO, she is more effective when shooting off a pass or getting to the net. As she's gotten more accustomed to her linemates, she has gotten better about trying to set them up. I think that version of her is more effective than the one that tries to take on the other team by herself. Krissy could also hold the puck, but she was always looking to find the open player.

5 games played last year, 14 games played this year for Gracie Ostertag.

Defensive miscues are a bugaboo for the Gophs, I think Gracie may have been the least mistake prone (soundest?) of our D.

Agreed on the least mistake prone...Ostertag is missed no question. Heard the interview with her on Saturday and it sounds like she will be back next year if the rehab goes as planned.

#9 was mentioned by ManBehindTheCurtain...She has a tendency to hang onto the puck but she is very good at setting up her teammates #22 and #3. I really like #22's and #3 work ethic and hustle but...they do not have the finishing skills to really take advantage of #9's playmaking ability. #9 with a finisher like #16 could work if #16 would take on the role that ARM described. But old habits are hard to break for #16 and she reverts back to wanting to rag the puck all by herself to create a shot.

Hey and just for grins this weekend pay attention to how Wisconsin will use #5's selfishness to their advantage by forcing her into mistakes. Hopefully I will be wrong and #5 will make some adjustments. I'm not counting on that happening, however.

Gophers add another European committment, this time for 2023 in Emma Kreisz. She is part of the Hungarian National Team and is currently playing for Stanstead College in Canada. Credit to poster bar_down_guy on GPL for the information.

They have certainly expanded their recruiting horizons. To quote Pepper Brooks..."It's a bold stategy, Cotton. Lets see if it pays off for them."

Certainly some unknown there, but... I think the Finnish Defender is a very good get for the Gopher staff. I signed up for on demand streams (it was free) of Stanstead College games to get a bit of a look at Kreisz and she is a 5'9" skater with very good stick skills. However, I have some question about how well her skating is going to translate to the college game. As you say...Time will tell.

There have been a number of years lately where the individual pieces seemed like they would make a great team, but the results on the ice was disappointing. Melding a collection of individual players into a true team is what a coaching staff does. I remember the OHIO STATE teams in the past were the goons of the WCHA, worst than (gasp) North Dakota. All credit to Nadine Muzerall for making OHIO STATE the number 2 team in the country without resorting to that. I love seeing the intense competition in the WCHA. While I back the Gophers whenever they play, the hardware at the end of the season is a bonus, not the purpose of their season.
