Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Would you want to be seen outside the house if you could only beat them by one goal in three of those four?

I am pretty sure that the team is ready to collectively hang up the skates.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Are you really saying that there was NO DESIRE to win the final five? Nada? Zip?

I don't think there was that extra push that teams have when it's a big game, because it wasn't really a big game in the big picture. They only gave 100%, and not 110%, that sorta thing.

Once they believe their chances to win a trophy are slim or none, most Gopher fans will tell you that the trophy doesn't matter and the NCAA title is the only one that matters. The MacNaughton was a big deal when they won it last year, then when they didn't think they were going to win it this year it was 'we only care about the National Championship'. Fast forward to when they won a share of it, it meant something again.

Last week, 'boy it would be special to win the MacNaughton, Broadmoor and NCAA title in the final year of the WCHA'. But they lost, so now 'who cares'. They aren't mutually exclusive, so I am not sure why some Minnesota posters on this board act like winning conference hardware isn't important.

I never waiver. NCAA 1, MacNaughton 2, Broadmoor 3. I want too see them win all 3 every year and am disappointed every year they don't get at least one. High expectations are part of the program and I never want to see that change.

This. The league trophies are nice, and yes, I do want to win them, but I'd gladly give both of them up any and every year for a national title. We have higher expectations as a program than many teams.

I'd agree with that. The Nattie is difficult because of the small margin for error, and the Mac is/was difficult because of the grind and the quality of the opposition. The NCAA will stay the same, and other trophies will replace the Mac and the Broadmoor for you, but those will be missed for a few years at least.

We are happy that the Gophers are THE regular season champions, and you guys keep whining because SCSU are only the co-champions.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

No it's not. :). The '02 team didn't win the Broadmoor and neither did last season's FF team. And again they had 3 losses in their past 12 played including 5 wins in a row before playing a CC team that was far more desperate for a win. I swear this team could save a baby from a burning building and some fans would still ***** if they didn't also put out the fire.

I don't really think the sky is falling, nor that their play in the last game signals failure in the NCAA. IT was one game in a stretch of good play. It was a joke as much as anything. But on the other hand, you like to see your team picking up the pace at the end, not looking like they think they can turn it on when needed.

As for more hardware, I think it is a mistake to discount not winning some. Yeah, if this team goes on to win the NC, it will mean almost nothing they blew their chance for the final five (although I bet it would still linger in their minds that they could have won all three in one year). But instead of looking at the teams that won the NC, you should look at the teams that won the final 5 and didn't win an NC, and I bet most of their players will say it was an awesome experience. And as a fan, I can say that it can be a long, long time between NC's and it feels pretty good to see your team win the McNaughton or the Broodmore. And while I still believe MN has the most talent in the country, even if they play their best in every game, all it means is they have slightly better odds than the other team, which still means the odds of them winning over them losing are still low. Take the wins when you can.

They need to just realize there is no tomorrow without a win and then play like it.

Yes it is.:) Among the 5 Ws, four (3 one goal games, 2 comeback wins) were against an 11th place team that only won 6 games all year and two of the most recent losses are shutouts. Not at all impressive for a #2 nationally ranked team.

If you extend your sample to 16 games, the Gophers are 9-5-2 (inc. WCHA playoffs and CC loss) compared with 13-3 ('02) and 11-5 ('12).

A reasonable comparison for defining "consistent" play going into the NCAA tournament is "teams swept/shutouts incurred" during the same 16 game period: 3/0 ('02), 3/0 ('12), 1/2 ('13). Total number of overall season sweeps in '02 and '12 is also negatively correlated as well: 7 ('02), 8 ('12), 4 ('13).

I'll use overall sweeps among WCHA national championship teams between 1999-2012 (DU, MN, UMD, UND and UW) as a performance metric to measure "consistency". Mean overall season sweeps for UND (2000), Gophers (2001-03), DU (2003-05), UW (2006), and UMD (2011) as NCAA national champs is 6.4 compared with the Gophers this season @ 4.

Thus, if the Gophers win a Natty they will be the anomaly in the above category among NCAA national champs from the WCHA over the last 14 years.

So the real question is: Can they even save the baby, unless they put out the fire?

Go Gophers! :)

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Aaah, yes. Bypassing Yale for the UND match up already and totally disregarding the massive egg laying on Friday night against CC. Typical.

The good news is they don't have to win the Broadmoor to win the title. Time will tell.

This is the part that's important to me. The last time they played that poorly and got booed, they came out on fire the next night. If they come back with that urgency this weekend, they'll be fine. If not, no way they make it to Pittsburgh.

Exactly. I think they won 5 straight after that Denver game. This time they only have to win 4.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

I think you guys are overlooking a lot of bad things that could happen this weekend.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

For you goofs who are going to the game(s) this weekend in the 2013 NCAA West Regional hosted by the University of Michigan, (:D) just as a friendly warning, this horn will make you **** your drawers if you're not prepared for it. It's the single loudest one I've ever heard in person. Turning this up on full blast and putting headphones in is just half the effect of it.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Burd, one game at a time. I am sure the Gophers are not looking ahead to Niagra.;)

Congrats on a season I'm sure you all wanted to last at least one more game. Good luck to the gopher seniors in their future endeavors and cheers to you fine people for supporting them!

Bye from another (soon to be former) WCHA team. Good luck next year, win the Big10.
