Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

I tend to agree with you. I've been looking at series sweeps as a independent variable that correlates with the construct "consistency". Can consistency demonstrated in regular season sweeps predict postseason placement? Statistically, WCHA and overall mean sweeps turns out to be a fairly valid performance metric and predictor variable of postseason success, as well as WCHA regular season championships.

Obviously, there can always be exceptions (as a Gopher fan I hope this is the year :)) and there also are inherent limitations in this little study. But based at least upon these numbers, the Gophers will most likely have an early exit from the F5 and the NCAAs.

I don't usually make predictions, but in this case the stats told the story for this season.

Didn't live up to expectations, but not a waste. I had fun watching them this year. Well, until February or so anyway. They peaked early which made our expectations go even higher, and they regressed and in the end blew it. Sucks, but oh well another banner I guess.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Just took a little stroll over to the Star Tribune's article (even though I told myself I wouldn't) to read some of the comments. I don't know why I expected anything less. The majority of the posts are comparing Don to Tubby and saying that tDon should be fired too. What is it with people over there? There are two people in particular who seem to really have it out for him too, not just today, but all season long for the past two years. Dirtydogs and Yathinkso...anyone know who I'm talking about?

Why you would fire one of the best coaches in hockey, I don't know. I don't get it. Maybe just chalk it up to uninformed posters? Or is that how people here feel too? Do UND fans scream for Hakstol's head because he's never won a NCAA Title?

People overreact too much. plus the NCAA tournament can be cruel with its one and done format.

You've obviously never been over to siouxsports.com.

Good call.

I think the team wasn't necessarily worse than last year. Its just that somehow they weren't any better. Off and on throughout the year they have avoided the dreaded Gopher tradition affliction: the inability to finish.

Turns out you can't just turn it on for the NCAAs. Coasting into the NCAAs is a great way to get beat. It was still a fun team to watch. A little maturing will help this team. Some guys just ran out of gas at then end of the year.

NHL contract watch is now in full effect.

Lucia's teams have been plagued by the inability to win the 'early' game of a weekend for years. As a result, his teams have made one Frozen Four in the last eight seasons because he just can't seem to motivate his team to win the first game of the weekend and when you translate that to the NCAA tournament, the results have been obvious. One Frozen Four every eight seasons might cut it at St Cloud, but not Minnesota. And his team - loaded with NHL talent - just lost to, and woefully outplayed by, a team with just four NHL draft picks. It's time for a new coach in Minnesota. Lucia doesn't have it any more...and he is no longer one of the best coaches in college hockey.

Crazy stuff. Firing Tubby still has me shaking my head.

I don't quite understand it, frankly. I know winning the Nattie is what the players play for, but as a fan I just love to watch good hockey, week in and week out. At UMinn you get that in spades. Would fans prefer to watch so-so hockey for years then snag a title? I don't know why they would--the bragging rights mean nothing for fans. We didn't play the game. We talk trash about it and give each other grief about titles and championships, but we're in it to watch top-end hockey as often as we can get it. And you guys get that all the time.

You apparently haven't been watching this team very closely for the last ten years. So-So hockey has been the hallmark of this team.
One Frozen Four in 8 seasons...nuff said.

Bad three year stretch, I grant you, but a lot of years like this one too, haven't you--Mac and top two ranking most of the year? That's winning a lot of hockey games.

Offer 1 Frozen Four every 8 years to most teams and see how quickly they take that deal. The fact that we expect more means that so-so hockey is not the hallmark of this team. And since you said, "the last ten years," the Gophers won the NC ten years ago. I wouldn't call a NC so-so hockey.
