Re: Minnesota Gopher women's hockey off season thread for summer 2014
my thought is that a perfect game in hockey might be the one where a team gives up no goals and the goalie makes no saves. I’ve dithered about other stats, but keep coming back to just the two: zero GA, zero saves. Thoughts?
Perfect perhaps. Boring more like it !. DId you watch the Blues-Hawks OT last night. Now that was exciting hockey. Lot's of great play. Lot's of excitement, but also a lot of mistakes......
To further my thoughts on the subject.........
A perfect game by a pitcher in Baseball is to allow no one on base for the whole game.......The hockey equivalent would be a shutout by the Goalie. Both cases "Garantees" a win for your team. Both the Pitcher and the Goalie need help from their teammates to achieve this level of excellence.
A perfect game in Bowling is to throw all strikes........ The hockey equivalent would be that All your shots go in.....Unlikely to ever happen.
A perfect season is an unblemished record, no ties, 100% wins......Rare, but can happen in any sport/competition.
My point in these examples.....Perfect games are examples of individuals within a team recording a perfect game from a statistics point of view. There is no such thing as a perfect game as measured from a team concept (even in perfect games by goalies or pitchers, mistakes can and do happen in the game, but they can be covered by team mates. (a good catch on the warning track, a great save by the goaler, a great block by the D etc)....
Therefore IMHO, there is no such thing as a perfect team game, other than the trying to express the fact that "The team played a well executed game".
