Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Hey guys...Harvard fan here who will be making the trip to Mariucci this year. I thought both Harvard and Minnesota would be coming into these games with better records, but the beauty of college hockey is that anything can happen.

A couple of questions:
1) Can anyone suggest a few nice places to eat? My wife is not a diehard hockey fan, but is being a great sport, so if possible, I'd like to repay her with a nice dinner. Hoping for one place that has a university feel and than a nicer place that one might host a business dinner at
2) We are staying at the Westin downtown (intersection of Marquette & 6th St). Should I take a cab from airport and take cabs throughout the weekend or should I rent a car? Is Mariucci walkable from the hotel?
3) Any other suggestions? Things to do during the day on Saturday?

Thanks in advance and as opposed to hogging your thread (I will come back to check if you just want to reply to this post), you can also email me at charowbotham@yahoo.com

The airport is far away. If you are planning on travelling around the city, renting a car might be cheaper (and more convenient).

Not that I eat at finer dining establishments, but Murray's in downtown Mpls has an excellent reputation for their food/ambiance/etc. Pricey, but worth it, so I've been told. Same with Jax Cafe in Nordeast Mpls (and I can tell you, THAT food is worth the price). Another pricier restaurant that I've been to a couple times is Nye's Polynaise (sp?) Room. Think: Goodfellas-type restaurant in decor, and awesome food.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Awesome, a diversion from talking about Gopher hockey!! ;) :o

Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown (campus area along University Ave & 4th St.) is a must!

Cafe Lurcat is not a campus feel type place but if you're looking for great place to eat in Mpls this is one of the best.

BTW, The Bank in the Westin is supposed to be good.

I will think of more as I'm sure others will.

If you don't mind the price of a quality restaurant, Capital Grille on Hennepin is my favorite steak place in Mpls and I have been to nearly every one (the 3 M's (sadly Morton's closed), Fogo, Kincaids, Ruth's....). Great ambience but not hoity hoity, great wine selection, the best oysters in town and and the service is second to none.

That said you can't go wrong with Murray's or Manny's (stay away from Ruth's and Kincaids imho), Fogo De Chao (Brazilian steak house) has a great lunch special ($25 all you can eat and not your typical buffet). I also recommend Oceannaire (seafood and such) and Brent's right about Jax (despite the name, which I hate) and Nye's (ok food but fun, fun, fun).

If you're not only interested in higher end stuff, there's the Town Talk Diner on Lake St., think diner food amped up, there's Emily's Lebanese Diner and The Holy Land for Med/Middle Eastern, Babalu on Washington for awesome Caribbean, and if you like Thai my favorite place is Amazing Thailand on Lake in Uptown. Also for fun there is Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge fior great pizza, sandwiches, polynessian (sp?) and a huge selection of tiki drinks that come in a large variety of tacky mugs you can buy for $5.

Others probably have better ideas for game day attractions around the arena.

I found the 112 Eatery in downtown to have excellent steak and food. The wine list is well planned but the wines could surely be better in my opinion.

If you are a brave soul like me and love German food and beer, Gasthof zur Gemütlichkeit. It is straight up University from Jax. Beware though, you may have so much effing fun that you miss the game on Saturday. You probably wouldn't care, though.

People have given some great suggestions for eateries, so I won't clutter that up much more. The only thing I'll say is that for campus-feel, the two places I would consider are Campus Pizza and Stub and Herb's (both about 4 blocks south of Mariucci on Washington). Also, if you are looking for a nice upscale place close to the rink, the Loring Pasta Bar would be a good option (about 5 blocks west of the rink on 4th st and 14th ave); but IMO some of the other places already suggested are better.

It doesn't make any sense to rent a car (unless you plan on going into the suburbs, but why the hell would you want to do that?;) ). The light rail is probably the easiest and by far the cheapest way to get between your hotel and the airport. There are plenty of great restaurants within walking distance from your hotel, and the others are all close enough that you can get there with $10 cab fare. One heads up about cabbing: you will have no trouble flagging one down in downtown around your hotel, but for the return trips you will need to order one. Not a big deal, typically it only takes 10-20 min for one to arrive.

Thanks Harley - sorry I don't post more but it's always great to hear how our team is doing and what people think [essentially us being mostly knowledgeable homers and seven different schools hating the U]. Here's to a great 2010 and hoping tDon has something up his sleeve in terms of a second-half run.

Obviously I'm coming to the game a little late here so I'll wish you a happy new year instead.

Any word on Matson? From where I was sitting it looked like it could be his knee again. Hopefully just an ankle sprain or something. :(

In his post game comments (the radio station can actually be tuned in near the arena!!) Lucia was asked if it was a knee and he said "he could not go into specifics but it was definitely not a knee." He then threw the "lower body" deal out there and Wally and/or Glenn later surmised it was his ankle and so far they didn't seem to think it was too serious.

Good to hear. It would be a shame if he did in his knee again, that would be very hard to come back from.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Missed the Gophs.

How so?

...oh and how did Cepis do?
Cepis was a joy to watch - a lot of energy, great puck control skills, hard shot, and a very good passer. I was shocked he didn't score.

To play defense as a freshman in the WCHA right out of HS is, IMHO, the most difficult transition in college hockey and Leddy is playing like he's a junior - almost Leopold like  at the same stage. Plus, the Gophers do something amazing when he's on the ice, they breakout of their zone. ;) His play with the puck is outstanding, great decisions (pass or rush) and moves the puck really well on the point. I hope we get to see him wearing the Treasured M as a junior.

Cepis looked as good as advertised last night. Constantly moving, great speed, great hands, loves to hold the puck, loves to shoot the puck, and puts it ON NET. Only knock from my perspective was he maybe held it too long in some situations/tried to do a bit too much. But considering the opponent and his long hiatus, that's understandable. BG was giving him a damm hard time all game....lots of talk and shoving when the clock was stopped.

If Cepis can perform like he did last night consistently, he should be a real impact player for this team.

I agree....I was watching him closely the whole game and he was far and away the best Gopher on the Ice last night.

Hopefully his efforts can rub off on a few other players.
