Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

The season is now over. Who's coming in next year to coach and to play?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

We might reach .500 again next weekend, but will immediately drop below for the remainder of the season after that.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I need more KoolAid.

I'm in Mankato Meltdown Mode right now.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Cepis is a total stud, just as advertised and I think when Jordan gets back.... AFTER winning the gold against Canada.... They will be a deadly combination. I also think that if the Gophers do continue to faulter and tDon is given the boot Blais will look GREAT on the Gopher's bench next year and beyond.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

It won't ever happen, but I'd love to see a Shroeder/tDon2/Cepis line.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Obviously losing sucks but I left the game happy with MN's play and effort.
With the exception being faceoffs.

That WILL be an absolute BEAST of a line..... Why do you think Don will not be showen the door this year????? And Dean would absolutly in a hearbeat take the U job, if the door is open. Fresh off a GOLD MEDAL (hopefully) even Maturi would be forced to pull the trigger on that.

That killed us. Overall they were much better tonight. But when they did stand around, NMU wasted no time making them pay for it.

Contract buyout issues. He'd have to leave on his own. And as far as the Blais rumors....I'm laughing until it actually happens. Methinks getting a Serratore brother to coach would be easier (at least for the next 3-4 years).

If the Boosters and Gopher faithful want him gone, I can Guarantee you that Don will be sent on his ***. I know several High Level Boosters were twisting Maturi's arm to boot Don last year and when asked Dean said hell yes he would come to the U if offered the job. I have always been a fan of Dean and after watching what he has done with Team USA, he is defiantly the right man for the job.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I have heard that Deano has a 'Could Leave for Minnesota" clause in his UNO contract.

That's the popular rumor, but I can't imagine UNO would bow down that much to Dean, considering there was also the rumor that Dean wouldn't coach them unless they were in the WCHA, along with the handing down of the job to Guentzel after 5 (?) years.

That's the crappy part about it. I thought MN played really well for about 75% of that game. But this loss really hurts. They are going to have to go 10-4 over the last 14 regular season games IMO to even get a whiff of an at-large bid. And that is a very tall task; one I will say I don't think they are capable of.

Maybe they can make strides, and get hot for the WCHA Tourney and win the AQ...

I'll believe it when I see it. Right now it's all a bunch of hearsay.

Not Guentzel. Hastings.

That was my thought as well. I thought they played good enough to win the game but faceoffs seem to be really killing them right now. Losing Matson and having Schroeder out didn't help any but they shouldn't be losing 75% of there faceoffs.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

What all of you are saying might very well happen. I heard from a very good source over the holidays that tDon will step down after the season (basically being forced out by the boosters) and Dean Blais will step in. And yes, Dean Blais has a Lou Holtz like out clause in his contract designed for this particular job. The second part of the rumor is that Dean will be taking on Tom Ward (of Shattuck St. Marys, and his World Junior Assistant) to the Gopher staff. I questioned the credibility of this person's sources but he said that he had talked to some NHL scouts at a AAA tournament and they basically said it was a done deal. This person in the know is a big Shattuck supporter (and a non gopher fan) and was worried about losing Ward, but knew that Andy Murray would be fired by St. Louis (which just happened) and figured he could step right back in at Shattuck since he still owns a house in Faribault. Pieces are in place and I would gladly welcome any change to liven up this talented, but under motivated group of gophers. Seems like the team lacks identity, aggressiveness, and overall freedom to play creatively. Cepis looks great and hopefully some of the other talented players on this team follow his lead and go to the net with some grit. You can only cycle so long in the corners, eventually you need to go to the net. First post in a year of frustration, so I will stop my rambling. Pieces are in place for next season.

I thought all college coaches could leave for any job they wanted? If not how do all of these coaches leave for different schools all the time?

We are getting to see all sorts of "sucking to lose" this year. I am not sure which is worse; this case where they actually showed up to play most of the game and seemed to deserve the win (last night), or the one where they lose a close one in which they only show up for one period so (take your pick of examples) you feel like they would have won if they played all game?

The faceoffs were frustrating. They need to spend about three practices just facing off. And I don't want to sound like "that guy" who complains about the refs as if one call made the difference, but from rewinding (yes I use VHS) the infamous offside call, I don't think the Gopher was even offsides, much less able to see the linesman calling the offsides when he raced into the zone. I watched it in slow-mo, and unless his back foot was off the ice little enough that I couldn't tell (it was on the top edge of the screen), he was on sides. Of course if they win the face off, there is no goal anyway.

Ok, back to positive; they did play most of the game and controlled the play with a fair number of good chances. They looked better than in most of their games. Cepis will contribute and of course Schroeder returning will help. I haven't given up on them, but they sure have a steep hill ahead.
