Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

"Though only a junior, Bjugstad accelerated his studies and will graduate this spring. He's committed to play at the University of Minnesota next fall."

While a very good hockey player at 17...can you imagine how good he would be if he had played another year in high school and 2 years in Juniors? :(

Could this contribute to the Gopher's problems?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Sad story.

I think Mayasich is up there with Hobey Baker as the greatest American player not to play in the NHL. Bill Cleary would be #3.

Saw this on the Hockey News. Not sure how credible the article is, but thought I'd share it:

10. Jordan Schroeder, C – University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (WCHA): Schroeder may not be a Gopher much longer; the stout pivot is believed to be deciding on whether to go pro sometime this week. The Canucks first-rounder had a down season, but maybe a stint with American League Manitoba could turn things around. Drafted 22nd overall by Vancouver in 2009.

I'm posting a link to a story I thought Minnesota fans might want to read.

Thanks for posting this article. John Mayasich was a hockey phenom, but I'm even more impressed by the thoughtful reflections of his son Dan in the wake of the tragic loss of his son Robby. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning - Psalms 30:5.

I would have to agree. IMO, a national award should be named after John Mayasich. He is the only Golden Gopher ever to have his number retired. John Mayasich was that good of a player.

For the NCAA Basketball Tourney, I'm picking Minnesota to upset Xavier in round 1 and then upset Pitt in round 2. Good idea or bad idea? I'm impressed with their early win over Butler and their recent wins over Michigan State and Purdue. Is it too crazy to put them in the Sweet Sixteen?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I bet that other than DU, you'd find that almost every team had similar stats.
Only the defensive-minded teams seem to do well when scoring so few - I'm guessing that Miami, Denver, and Cornell all had decent records when scoring < 3.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Do the gopher fans think it would be better to have more kids go through juniors?

You're kidding right? The vast majority of the team has junior experience. There is not a recruiting problem and there is not too many players coming out of High School. That's a myth.

Yes, it is. They are too inconsistent. The root cause, I believe, is they lack a true point guard to control the game when things get tough. They are capable of playing really good basketball against even very good teams and they can lay an egg against a mediocre team the next night.

Hey Goldy, I think you're on to something there. The reason Don Lucia and the Gophers didn't advance to the WCHA Final Five is the lack of consistent play from the point guard position. Maybe the team could still sneak into the later rounds of the NIT and work on that aspect of its play.:D

All kidding aside, what are the papers in your neck of the woods saying: are they calling for Lucia's head on a platter or do they think he should be retained as coach?

Good luck to the Minnesotas against the Xaviers in the ObamaBall event. :)

I don't think "the papers" have taken a stand on the topic. One local columnist (and radio guy) has been anti-Lucia for years (but this columnist hates hockey anyway). I'm not aware of others taking any stand. Many on sports radio and elsewhere have gotten pretty negative, but I think the consensus remains that Don is on some thin ice and things better improve big-time next season.

The Gopher hockey faithful have been more critical. The rubes on Gopher Puck Live have voted 247 for a change to 75 for give him more time (don't know how many of those votes were non-Gopher fans casting their votes either). Maturi, the AD, has stated that Don can stay through the end of his contract, if he wants to (of course there have already been coaches pressured to "resign"). I believe Don will be back next year, but if he misses the NCAA next season, he'll be moving on.

Thanks for the view from where you sit. See the long term plan is working nicely. As you know Joel Maturi went to Minnesota from Denver. Since that time Denver is [:D] while the Golden Golfers are []. Hey, maybe if Don can't turn things around next season the Gophers could hire a proven winner like John Markell.

Happy St. Patty's Day to ya.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Whatever the gophers' problems are, I hope they get them straightened out soon. They are unquestionably one of the premier programs in college hockey history, and it's just not the same when they play like a middle-of-the-pack team. I like it when the Sioux beat them, but in the end I just want to watch great hockey. The Gophers have a long history of playing great hockey, and we will all be better off when they get back to that.

I'll probably have to stay away from ss.com for a while. . . . I mean, I have my own gopher hate issues, and there are some things a Sioux fan just does not say.
