Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Anyone else think the apparently still official scoring on the first Gopher goal Saturday is wrong?

The box score has Davis with the goal, assists to Cline and Terry.

First, extremely unlikely that Davis and Terry were both on the ice at the same time in an early game even strength situation.

Second, the box gives Cline an assist but lists Gophers on the ice as Davis, Brausen, Lorence, the usual Davis centered line and as apparent D, Burns and Terry? The box gives an assist to Cline while not listing her as on the ice for the goal.

I think the Burns and Terry numbers are wrong, probably not 17 and 10, much more likely 27 and 11.

I suspect the real scoring sequence was Davis from Cline and Lorence.

Any injury news?

I am wondering what happened to Schipper, it appeared to me Burns was skating in her place the third period and I don't remember her being on the ice in the 2nd

the scoring does seem odd, such a situation could happen immediately after a penalty kill, but that wasn't the case

Listened back to the sequence in question. I had it Davis from Cline and Brausen.
Not sure if the crew in Duluth in charge of scoring was really on the ball. They actually had Terry scoring for quite a while before getting that part correct.
Great weekend nonetheless. The freshman D are coming along quite nice and think that they will be just fine. Leveille was very sharp with the exception of the last goal which was a bit soft.
When Brandt starts scoring goals, this team will be almost as tough as last.

Given the way they do piecemeal changes it's easy for members of two different lines to be on the ice for a stretch before the change is completed. I don't remember the play well enough to give any insight as to what actually happened.

And it's possible to get an assist (or even in unusual circumstances a goal) without being on the ice. If a player makes a pass to someone who scores and goes off on a change before the puck goes in the net, that can be what happens. So the official scoring strongly suggests one of two things happened: the scorers got it wrong or the goal was scored while the team was in the process of changing. Either one strikes me as a real possibility.

Flug and Garzone warmed up before both games and Garzone was on the bench for at least some of the time but I don't think all. One of the people I was near said that he saw her take a shift on Friday but, if so, I missed it. In warmups, Flug was clearly not skating aggressively and so I wouldn't read into this that she is really close to playing.

Schipper took a hard hit late in the first period on Saturday. When she left the ice after the period she didn't look healthy. She was on the bench for the second period but took no shifts and she stayed in the locker room for the third. I thought Burns did a good job filling in on the line, though it obviously plays differently with the change.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

It was a fun weekend in Duluth, although we ended up staying in Two Harbors. The Gophers played very well, except for a couple of minutes in each game, including at the end of the second period on Saturday. They came out strong at the start of the third period just as did against the Badgers last weekend. Before Saturday's game my wife and our "fellow traveler" both noted that they thought Shannon Miller might want her players to be much more aggressive and perhaps "put the hurt" on a few Gophers to try to slow them down a bit. So much for that idea. Our women Gophers are tough, for sure. My wife asked, "Why are they (the referees and other team's players) always picking on Sarah Davis just like they did on Sarah Erickson? I responded a couple of minutes later that a goal is ALWAYS the best revenge!

Thanks, good information, just exactly what I was hoping to find out. I noticed Burns and not Schipper and wondered what was what.

With only 18 skaters they are going to need both Flug and Garzone, the sooner they are able to play the better.

Sure, I get that, except that the change is not haphazard, the wing has to jump on when the wing they are replacing comes off and the next center only ever enters when the exiting center goes off. I wouldn't expect Terry under ANY circumstances until Davis goes off. Terry never replaces Lorence, Davis never replaces Bona, Brandt never replaces Brausen.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Terry never replaces Lorence, Davis never replaces Bona, Brandt never replaces Brausen.
There are times when it does get out of whack, but it usually involves either a penalty (e.g., Davis and Terry are frequently paired on the PK) and could still be out together for a few seconds after the penalty expires, or the end of a period where they will put out two centers in case one gets booted from the faceoff.

The way I remember that particular play was that Davis shot with two teammates in front. I assumed they were Brausen and Lorence. My best guess is that the person trying to reconstruct the numbers after the fact saw the "1" from Brausen and the "0" from Lorence and incorrectly wound up with "10", but I don't know that for a fact. I was told when the goal was back to Davis that Terry had said she didn't deflect the shot. I don't know if her actual comment was closer to, "I didn't deflect the shot because I wasn't even on the ice."

Did you guys think of asking the coaches for the game disc so you could settle this pressing issue and eliminate the slew of sleepless nights that await you?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Why would the coaches care whether or not we sleep? If there is a major discrepancy, I'm sure it will get resolved.

yes, they all seem to be adapting to the college game well
I didn't think the second UMD goal was Leveille's fault, probably the low point of the weekend, all the Gophers were standing around on that one

Miller waited until the game was the second period I believe, then they started , as we all know if you cannot bring your game up to match the other teams skill, attempt to bring the other team down to your level.
The only problem with that is if the other team has better discipline, a better PP & PK, it will not work
also it is like a chess game
trading McParland for Menefee works in the Gophers favor since they have more pieces

and yeah, poor Davis cannot buy a penalty, but the refs sure seem to be watching her if she does something wrong

I'll agree that there were a couple of cases where Duluth got away with a penalty against Davis, but she was only called for one all weekend herself and she definitely got her two minutes worth on that one.

Ms. Hockey candidate selections may be a ways off...but I'm compelled to inquire, has there ever been a Ms. Soccer on the GWH roster before?

There will be. ;)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

A long time ago my educators were very fond of the phrase educated guess. ;)

there are a few on this forum who would object to that

engineers make an educated guess
grad students = prediction
professor = probability

but they are all the same IMO

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

engineers make an educated guess

I'm and engineer, and the "last" we do is make an educated guess.

(Maybe that is what they did in your neck of the woods for the I-35 bridge, hence your opinion :D )

What actually happened on the I-35 bridge was a slide rule error; they miscalculated the load capacity by a factor of 10.
