Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I think McMillen already is and is going to continue to be a very good player but I am not yet ready to start comparing her to Schleper and Bozek.
I thought that was the point of this whole discussion.

Anyway, I did think it was an overall good debut by #29 in her first start with it now being her net. First couple minutes weren't what she'd have wanted, but she bounced back well and kept the puck out immediately after we fell behind and gave up some quality chances. Also, the entire team did well in defending the 5-on-3 PP chances, and your goalie has to be the best penalty killer. Although, Sarah Davis is pretty valuable at those times as well. I wonder what the deal was with #9 and the linesmen, because she kept getting bounced from the faceoff dot all night.

Still bent about today's video quality...
At least we got to see it; it was free. When I first started following this sport, it took a while to get a final score out of a game like today. Not worth getting too upset about. Of course, I may feel that way because I was watching on my phone, so the quality wasn't going to make much of a difference anyway. At least I could make out the goal celebrations and the maroon team was doing most of them.

Couldn't watch the feed even though free. I mostly followed the game on the LiveBlog.

Is it possible that Hamilton, NY, is still on some kind of dial up?

Because I haven't seen video that choppy for a long time.

All true, but any idea how the video quality can go from excellent (near HD sharpness and very smooth) one day to very poor (fuzzy and herky-jerky) the next?

Someone help me. I've been doing this for five years now, and have always thought that a hitting/checking from behind is pretty much a five/gamer when you hit someone as Liz Trautz did in the third. Video was bad, but still could tell that it was an intentional hit from behind into the boards. Frosty was a bit peeved that she didn't get more too. Scored on the PP later when Trautz sat for cross checking anyway. But can someone explain possibly why the officials didn't make the call, or should I ask Greg Shepherd the next time I see him to offer a possible explanation.

It's readily apparent to this observer that when it comes to the checking from behind call the refs do a much better job of protecting college men players than they do the women. You would think it would be the opposite, since what's considered legal body checking in the men's game is whistled for two minutes in the women's game. But when it's from behind in either game it should be a five minute major - period. On Trautz's hit the ref called it a check from behind but they only gave her two minutes? I don't recall seeing that before.

Also, and maybe they've changed the name of the penalty this year, but in one of the games this weekend I believe I heard them call a (normal) body check an "illegal check"? I was under the impression that in the women's game ALL body checking is illegal, which would make calling it an "illegal check" redundant, would it not?

So play-by-play guy - yes - if you do run into Mr. Shepherd please see if he could provide some clarification for us.

Friday night students are off the net and out getting drunk, the load is less on Friday night
Saturday afternoon they are texting/browsing to see what happened Friday night, so it is heavier

your connection also is subject to the load

On Saturday it was jerky for me too during the first period, I had planned to go somewhere after the game, so I hopped in my car with my laptop and headed towards where I was going but stopped at a library and viewed the rest of the game their, it was much better.

if it is slow, make sure you close everything else down, that might help

I prefer the Colgate feed to the U of MN postage stamp viewport
and considering it was free and the U of MN charges $$ for it, I ain't gonna complain
also they seem to have dropped live audio from last year :(
hmmmm.... looks like free audio is available next weekend
it appears it may change week by week

Checking from behind is a major if it's into the boards or the net; it's a minor elsewhere. I wasn't watching the game so I can't comment on this particular instance but if the ref gave a checking from behind minor it means that he didn't think it was directly into the boards. Or something.

Should be free audio for all the rest of the games this year.

It was definitely into the boards.

When is the banner raising for the 2013 Natty? What about the other banners...WCHA reg season, WCHA Final-Faceoff, Undefeated Season, etc...

I don't know but I'm hoping it is not this weekend, no sense PO'n the Badgers, the games should be close as it is

on the other hand I'd like to see a "free cheese curds right here" banner somewhere in the corner so I can knab a good GA seat in case there are a lot of Badger fans present

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Minnesota gave up 4 goals to toothpaste on the weekend...Gave up the first goal in both games...Really looked downright awful in the first game, however were better in the second but still gave up three goals. Right now they MIGHT be the 4th best team in the WCHA and unfortunately don't have a lot of time to get it figured out with Wisconsin in this weekend. There is a good chance the winning streak will come to an end which may not be a bad thing for this team.

The only other WCHA team with a road win at this point is Ohio State. The rest of the league will have to get themselves figured out as they go along as well. UMD played UConn, one of the worst teams in the country last year, now with a new coach. UND played Lindenwood, a team that is still learning and missing some players. The scores look impressive, but what happens against tougher competition?

You may, be right. There could be three or four teams in the league that are better. I doubt it though. One of the reasons we look so bad is that we still remember what they looked like last year. They made it to the final game in 2006 with a team that never did learn to pass better than what we saw on Friday night. I agree that the winning streak will end sooner rather than later, and that it won't be too bad except in terms of loss of attention from the media and bandwagon fans.

Keep the faith.

Let's hope they take some things away from the opening series @ Colgate per better starts, fewer penalties etc. for the upcoming series with Wisconsin. Rigsby always seems up for the Gophers and will quite likely be tougher to score on. Looking for some improvement in putting the pucks where they want 'em...hitting the open spots from the shooters. Good SOG from the blue line for redirects and rebounds. I know this team is better in all those aspects than was executed at Colgate and in exhibitions.

Freshmen probably excited for their first big conference rivalry games. Need all the points from this one...;)

Nice to get a little info on Brooke Garzone. Be a plus if she could play. Encouraging to hear it's possible.

Hoping for a tie in the standings come Sunday. I know, I know...games in hand.

Guess we may find that answer this coming weekend as the four highest ranked WCHA teams are in head to head competition.

Too early to say who the top four will ultimately be. It went down to the final week last year, and I'm sure the Buckeyes will have something to say again. The others will as well.

Fair, meant to say "four highest ranked WCHA teams". Fixed the post.
