Looks like the video from Colgate is free. Now just hope the quality is good...same for the outcome obviously.

Go Gophers!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Both Garzone and Flug are out, so down to 16 skaters.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Officials take a PP tally away from the Gophs...early wistle IMO.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Coverage has been better than the Gophers' play so far. It's a tough game when you can't pass. We do okay when we throw it to an area and one of our kids gets there first. Tape-to-tape ... not so much. Oh well, first period of the season.

I know patience is required, but the lackadaisical play drives me nuts. Ramsey and McMillen should have both been penalized and we got lucky on the no-calls. Davis had looked good. Terry has been her usual self. The freshmen look like they belong. Not great rebound control by Leveille on the goal, but she got better as the period went along.

Let's go Gophs!

I think the forechecking was very good for stretches of the first but, yeah, the passing hasn't been very good.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Kelly Terry with typical excellent work on the PK.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

turning into a penalty fest. Thought they missed one on Colgate just prior to the Brandt call.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

They'd better start playing better. Even if they get out of this with a win UMD isn't going to have a chance to end the winning streak unless we improve.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Well, they found a way to win when they were playing pretty darn poor. That's something at least.

Congrats on #50 ladies. That is a big number.

What a difference a year makes! Gophers did play better as the game progressed, but there are many areas of their game that need to be improved.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Sticks looked a little tight. Lot of pressure for a first game, understandably. They were a lot looser last weekend, but they'll be fine and much better tomorrow.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Always pretty hard to tell with a predominantly single camera web stream but it appeared to me that the Gophers leaned very heavily on the 3 returning D.

Saw an awful lot of Ramsey, McMillen and Gillanders. Saw Wolfe some, saw Haley once, Burns a couple of times, Cline maybe.

It also seemed like most of the second half of the game was played on special teams which means that the defensive rotation we saw was NOT typical. But the veterans clearly carried the load. That's a load on 3 players which is unsustainable if they are going to be as good as their pre-season ranking.

I'm sure that is the plan until the new D get up to speed. I saw Haley quite a bit. The problem as I saw it was that the veterans didn't play very well. McMillen looked like she'd never taken a one-timer before. Those three have to know that they can't afford to take penalties. To take two in a row on plays that weren't dangerous won't work, especially when you're being counted on to be one of the anchors. That puts too much pressure on the rest of the blue line. I was happy with the new kids, but disappointed in a couple of the returners who I hoped would bring more.

I would also expect them to be a little more loose, and better in the rematch. Hopefully smarter about staying out of the box too.

I'm going to agree with every single bit of this except the part about seeing Haley quite a bit.

But add that Ramsey was the only D who took a penalty, she took two. One of which was completely and totally a bad call. That thing behind the Colgate net was a classic big kid and little kid run into each other both pursuing the puck, little kid falls down, big kid gets penalty. Bogus.

McMillen is only a second year player, most Gopher second year D, especially recently, haven't been asked to carry the load that she is being asked to carry. But add a double agree that she absolutely cannot completely whiff on a one timer from the point on the power play.

Agree with ARM's assessments. Shots (or attempted shots) from the point - especially on the power play - clearly need work. Until later in the game, when we established much better control in the offensive zone, the PP itself wasn't as sharp as we're accustomed to seeing. We also had a number of point-blank opportunities from in close that the forwards could not capitalize on. Several times the shots went right into the goalies' midsection, when there appeared to be plenty of open net to hit. And taking successive penalties within 30 seconds - giving your opponent an extended two man advantage - must be avoided. Watch those sticks and be especially careful when your opponent has her back to you!

It was good to see the Gophers establish control in the 3rd period. Much better teamwork with a much higher percentage of their passes finding the target. With first game jitters out of the way, I'm optimistic that they can continue where they left off as soon as the puck drops in tomorrow's rematch.

Both Schleper and Bozek had a similar role by year two. I'd forgive the one whiff -- Schleper used to whiff on wrist shots after she injured her wrists -- but even when #13 hit the puck she didn't get good wood on it.

As for the first penalty on #5, I thought she initiated too much contact on the play with no real advantage in doing so. As a team, judgement was lacking in that regard all night right up to the final hook on Terry with 2 minutes to go. Don't need to be hooking anyone 120 feet from your net. While some of the calls were tick-tack, the officials had made those calls all game.

I think McMillen already is and is going to continue to be a very good player but I am not yet ready to start comparing her to Schleper and Bozek.

You are completely right about Ramsey's penalty, no real advantage, she could have and probably should have let it go. Doesn't change that it was a completely bogus bad call.

Terry?

Geez, what could she possibly have been thinking?

Bona should get the hard hat for saving everyone's bacon with the short handed goal on the ensuing PP.
