What happened to San Francisco? For sure the most liberal back in my hey day.

9th...

Minnesota still has a lot of work to do but being outplayed for 2 periods they came out and played well in the third and escaped with a 2-1 win. 52 straight.

Maryanne was Maryanne, Milica was Milica, and Leveille was sharp as a razor.

Wisconsin played great for 2 periods, but so did Leveille.
Then the rdefending champs showed up in the 3rd period.
Game Over.

Love the Red Menace alternate nickname, though the commie insinuation is not flattering, but the team is located in the People's Republic of Madison. You won't find a more commie democratic town outside of the Capitol of North Korea.

Looks like you don't know how to differentiate political ideologies. Commie democratic is an oxymoron don't cha think?

...and I like 3 pts. vs. UW every bit as much as I like 52. Actually more probably.

Fabulous, fabulous crowd for Friday 6pm, according to the box score report 2,754.

Of course, the free t-shirts and pizza for the students helped. But still, a fabulous, fabulous crowd for Friday 6pm in October.

First period close to a push, slight advantage to Wisconsin. Each team had a goal, neither was pretty. I thought the Gopher goal was a double deflection, the second by a Badger defender. Overall? Wisconsin.

Second period totally all Wisconsin, a dominating performance. It must have looked great to the Badger fans, it sure looked bleak to me.

Third period? The Gophers won that period and won the game.

I doubt very much that Wisconsin is very discouraged. They were the better team for two of the three periods tonight. I am pretty sure they are confident that they can win a game here this weekend.

Line them up, let's go again tomorrow and find out.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

That was not a good effort through the first two periods. Surprisingly, I didn't think the defense was the real problem. Megan Wolfe looks like she's settling back in there nicely. Ramsey had a couple of silly plays, and got away with a couple of penalties that weren't called but I thought McMillen looked steady through the goal game in addition to scoring the winning goal.

The biggest issues were with the forwards. In that second period they made bad decisions in their own zone and didn't execute their passes at all. There were a lot of turnovers just inside the defensive blueline. When they finally got going in the third I liked the play of the Terry/Cameranesi/Schipper line.

The ice was embarrassingly bad. The corner near where I sit was visibly pitted, especially in the second (not that it mattered that much given how little time the puck spent down there). Wisconsin did a much better job of adjusting to the ice conditions than the Gophers did. But really, this shouldn't happen. It is frustrating how often the start of a period has to be delayed because the water isn't frozen yet. I cannot figure out why a team that plays in the style the Gophers do can't figure out how to make a better ice surface.

I agree. If they can't turn up the compressors they should eliminate the between-period festivities and resurface the ice immediately when the preceding period is over, giving it a good 7-10 minutes to allow it to harden.

Just confirming that it was definitely a double-deflection. It clearly changed direction twice. I cannot confirm who it hit on the way through, though.

The second deflection, I thought it hit the Badger D right in the chest and then directly into the net.

Terry took the initial shot, goal credited to Menefee, I assume Menefee had the first deflection.

Lately, I find myself missing the post-game video interviews we used to see on the Gophersports site after home games.
The Strib had some video with Milica in their piece:

As I understand, the problem for Gophersports is that they no longer have the flip cam that was used to generate the video in the past and that model is no longer sold. They have posted audio in their stories as well as here:

Listened to the Coach Frost audio at GopherSports. Is that then the official reason for waving off the Badger red lamp lighter? Off the cross bar, never in the net?

Based on the angle that it came back I'd say right post and out. But yes, the puck did not cross the line.

They looked really good today. I thought they controlled the game in a way that neither that shot totals nor the final score really captures. Wisconsin played hard and had their chances but the Gophers had a lot more plays where you said, "Wow, that could easily have been a goal." A lot of them didn't result in an actual shot because they were just wide or because someone couldn't quite get their stick on the puck but they were close.

My final verdict on the weekend was one lousy period, one terrible period and then four outstanding periods. And the end result is a sweep of the Badgers and who can complain about that?

Nice summary - couldn't agree more. Hopefully they got Period 2 on Friday completely out of their system. Really nice to see them rebound the way they did and get the sweep over a very good and well-coached Badger squad.

Given how often I criticize her play I should give a shout out to Milica McMillen who I thought had a very good weekend. She was steady, focused and in control. She didn't commit penalties and she didn't make lazy plays. If this is what her sophomore season is going to look like she will be both an incredibly valuable player and the most improved player in the WCHA.

Speaking of print media, here's the write-up from the other side of the Mississippi River. http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/227535141.html

And then there's the non-print media, specifically the recap from ARM on USCHO.com -- http://www.uscho.com/recaps/2013/10...se-as-minnesota-completes-sweep-of-wisconsin/

I didn't see the Friday game, so I can't comment on that, but I completely agree with the assessment of today's game. Looking at the scoreboard, it was very odd to see Wisconsin have the SOG lead for most of the game. With as much as the Gophers controlled the puck all day long, I'd have expected the SOGs to be very lopsided in Minnesota's favor.
