Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Thanks for the great article about Sarah Erickson! Sarah along with Andrea Nichols were two of our favorites over the past ten years. I'll never forget Sarah's magnificent shot against the Badgers in Duluth two years ago. It sealed the deal and probably saved me from having a heart attack in the last minute or so of that game, well, that and Noora's incredible saves toward the end! Anyway, it's always fun to hear what former players are doing and Sarah's doing quite well!

The balanced scoring, the exceptional team defensive play and the mature play of the freshmen has been a very pleasant surprise to me for both the men and women's hockey teams. Both teams have been a joy to watch this year! I miss the WCHA though, but I'll get over it.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I agree; the first half was more than we could have hoped. My opinion on keys to continued success:

1) stay healthy/eligible. We seemed most vulnerable when we started to run out of bodies. Menefee was the only player we were missing in the loss, but Lorence and Garzone were just coming back and others were bouncing around between forward and D.
2) stay out of the penalty box, because it is tough to help your team from there.
3) continue to play each game like you believe you're the best team in the country and are intent on proving it.
4) figure out the D corps and eventually D pairs.
5) set the forward lines, but this seems to be farther down the list, because by and large people have seemed to play together well.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

last year at this point the team had scored 114 goals and given up 12, compared to 98/26 this year. When you consider they outscored their 3 non conference opponents 43-2, the in conference games are fairly close, 71/10 compared to 63/19 this year

at the beginning of the year a few people questioned the teams ability to score, and one person in particular, guess what? she's at the top of the national scoring chart (OK, actually 2nd by a point, but has a game in hand)
a few also questioned the defense (including me) and McMillan & Ramsey in particular (not me), does anybody in the nation have a better +/- than McMillan? +31

the only question is will they play 60 minutes with intensity, if so, there isn't anyone that beat them
but now we know, spotting a very good team 3 goals is not likely to end happily

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Davis has spent much of her Gopher career centering a defensive line. I think she looks REALLY good as center of of what looks to me like a first line, with Bona and Lorence on the wings. This pairing has allowed us a reintroduction to the offensive skills of Sarah Davis and she is blooming. The line looks to me like a possibly dominant really good first line.

Brandt still has the magic hands, she seems likely to be able to make it work with lots of different wingers as she waits for the return next year of Kessel. For now Menefee seems suited to be what she was last year with Brandt and Kessel, an opportunistic scorer and a solid presence. Schipper had some moments early in the season. The coaching staff thinks enough of her to use her at the point on the PP, personally I take that as an indication that they think she is plenty good. This line is a good line offensively, any line with Brandt on it is a good line defensively.

Kelly Terry seems likely to make it work with anyone who can get down the rink fast enough to be in position for a back pass after Terry's first in the nation speed has blown up the defense. Camaranesi has been excellent at this so far, she is another frosh who the staff thinks enough of to use on the PP. Brausen has yet to find a scorer's touch but she does so many things so well and at such a high rate of speed, I think she fits with Terry.

PK always provides evidence of which are the best two way players. We are getting heavy doses of Brandt with Bona, Davis with Terry. It is probably way too early to start this speculation but is Bona a candidate at center next season after Davis and Terry leave? Camaranesi looks like another candidate to me.

Gillanders, Ramsey and McMillen have done the improbable, they have stepped up and shown the way, teamed with the freshman D and provided to this point a much better than expected blue line. I agree that it would be nice to see the rotation settle out a little and find out which of the last four currently rotating D corps are going to be the last two going forward and possibly get them situated with some sort of regular pairing.

I like Garzone's play a lot at D, I also like Burns. I am just a trifle more comfortable with those two at D but only a trifle. Both Cline and Haley are having moments although a couple of Cline's moments have come at forward.

It is an adjustment getting used to not having the best goaltender in the world between the pipes but this new kid has done every thing she should do to this point. She may not be the "none shall pass" that we got used to for the last four years but she definitely looks an awful lot like at least "very few shall pass".

19-1.

I like Garzone's play a lot at D...
The only thing that I'm not crazy about with Garzone playing D is that she is the one I'm most comfortable with stepping in at forward when needed. If history is any predictor of what we will see, another forward will be needed at some point (like in the NCAA quarterfinal last year.) I've been happy with all of the 5 newcomers on the blue line, and I think their play is a huge reason why there are 19 games in the wins column. That has gone way better than I expected before the season.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I agree with ARM. At this point, my picks for the top 6 D would be: Gillanders; Ramsey; Burns; McMillen; Wolfe; Haley. Given the extent to which the coaching staff prefers to go with three lines, I'd probably make Cline the 7th defenseman with Garzone and Flug as extra forwards that either fill in on the top three lines or that take occasional shifts with someone (who in most cases is Terry).

If they were looking for just 6 D and a full four lines, I'd have either Wolfe or Cline as that last forward and put the other in the defensive rotation.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I don't know if "handedness" plays a part in the D pairings. Being a lefty, I looked at the roster before the season and was surprised at how left handed it was, especially on D (only Haley is a righty). I was initially surprised when the season started and Brad was trying so many forwards at D. But then I noticed that Wolfe and Garzone are righties, and it made some sense. I would not be surprised if Wolfe stays in the top four D for the season with Burns and Cline shifting between fourth line and D as needed.

That's why Wolfe and Schipper were given shooting roles on the power play immediately, because minus Bozek and Jalosuo, the team needed right-handed options with big shots, particularly for one timers based on where the pass will be coming.

I would not be surprised if Wolfe stays in the top four D for the season ...
Wolfe has been in the top four for a long time with the exception of the UND series when they moved her to forward for a game plus. Over the last few weeks, the other four have been rotating with a game each weekend on D and one on the fourth line.

In a perfect world, the team would like a R/L combo in each pair, but we've had L/L pairs like Schleper/Ramsey and Ramsey/Stecklein that seemed to manage fine with somebody playing the off side. It is hard to keep it perfectly balanced 3 righties and 3 lefties when a team wants to take the best talent in every class.

Almost all lefties fits my definition of perfect :).

Also, kudus to D2D for finding the Kare11 Athlete of the Week link. I saw the piece and wanted to post a link, but Kare11 changed their web site - poorly IMO. Apparently usability was not high on their list of objectives. Eventually someone should tell them we are in the Central Time Zone.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

All I know about righties vs. lefties and power play combinations is that, at least once during the series in Columbus, Frosty threw out a combination of 4F and Ramsey on the PP unit.

Unfortunately, I don't remember which four forwards comprised the combination. Brandt was one of them, and was hanging out by the blue line.

For most series, one unit has always had 4F. If you think about the D that have been regulars on the PP, it is Ramsey, McMillen, and Wolfe. Baylee has played at times like when McMillen was injured at Bemidji, but two lefties on top doesn't work that well on the PP. There have been times like at the end of a period when they are really trying to get a goal that they have gone with #5 and #13 at the same time, but one of them is going to have trouble one-timing a pass from the other.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

It's kind of hard to tell how many forwards we have on the power play given that I'm not sure who, exactly, counts as a forward . . .

Anyone without big pillows strapped to their shins!

For example, in the game at UMD on 10/19, the Gophs scored 3 PP goals. People on the ice for them were:
MIN: 5,6,7,9,12,G29;
MIN: 5,10,14,21,22,G29;
MIN: 10,13,14,21,22,G29
Only 5, 12 and 13 out of those players have played D in normal five-on-five situations.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

It looks to me totally from the seating area that they are comfortable when the opposition PK moves them into a 1-2-2 with Ramsey or McMillen at the top. They play this way with either of the wings coming to the point when the position of the puck in the zone makes a 2-3 a better set up. Also Wolfe is on one of the units but she doesn't play the point, she sets up down low in the role that Jalosuo often played last year, screen and tip, battle for the rebound.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Like Jalosuo, she can also move to the circle on the weak side and be available for a one-timer.
