Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Another intolerable slight to women's hockey.
There were Internet connection issues at OSU Ice Rink. I know Mandy, the Gopher sports information contact, was working hard to try to get things up.

Sarah Davis took a hard check from behind in the second period. OSU's player got the requisite major penalty and not just a game misconduct but a DQ. Davis was thoroughly examined on the bench, sitting the rest of the period, but returned in the third. I did not notice any issues with Lorence.

Very chippy, ugly game. Even without the major-DQ on the Buckeyes, the teams combined for 18 minor penalties. Glad to get out of there with the win.

Heading into the break, the top +/- stats on the team are McMillen (+31), Bona (+29), and Brandt (+25). The most surprising to me is Garzone at (+19), because she has only dressed for 14 games and hasn't always gotten much ice time. Her 12 points are impressive in that light as well.

Senior captain Bethany Brausen said Ohio State turned to its physicality in the second period, when Minnesota led.

Perhaps a future in diplomacy for Captain Brausen?

“It was probably the worst hit from behind that I’ve seen in my years of coaching women’s hockey, so I’m glad Sarah ended up being OK,” Frost said.

“They went to their strengths in the second [period], and that was being physical,” Davis said. “It was just getting a little bit out of hand.”

Davie a liitle less concerned with diplomacy.

Garzone needs more playing time. I've been really impressed both with her and with Jordyn Burns.

The link wasn't working for me.
Yeah, sorry. That's because it wasn't a link. My Mac has been screwed up the last week or so on the USCHO forum; I don't know why. It might be a PHP problem or something of that ilk. I can go to another account on the same Mac, log in to this forum with my username, and it works as usual. On this account, it's almost as though the page doesn't finish loading and I only see a portion of the usual functionality. If I click the "Default Style" link, it looks okay and takes me to the "Fan Forum Home", but as soon as I click to one of the sub-forums, it is screwed up again. I haven't had time to try to figure out what is broken.

For the last month or so, my iPhone is screwed up such that I can't even access this forum. I can get to the cafe and the men's forum with no problem. If I click the link for the women's forum, it just keeps repainting the "Fan Forum Home". I haven't seen similar weirdness on any other site.

Fascinating.

I love any discussion that includes PHP.

I have a guess or two but my guesses are based on my personal experiences in the Windows environment. I doubt they have any relevance whatsoever in Mac.

So can't you do a cloverleaf period space bar thing?

Good luck.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I've been experiencing various strange USCHO only gremlins going back to when the site was hacked. If I use the forum tools to mark a forum read it takes me to some strange page that looks like something from an alternate universe. I have to navigate back to the "forum" button to actually return to the forum index page. Every time.

On the USCHO Minnesota Women's Hockey Team Page the "M" under the USCHO Extra and Minnesota Women banners is disproportionately huge compared to all other page text and blocks nearly the entire upcoming games schedule. A few other repeating gremlins but you get the idea.

If this is the thread for complaining about the site :-), the home page isn't designed for a touch interface -- the drop-down menus from "D-I Women" that lead to schedules, stats etc need to be activated very quickly, or they register the click to drop down as a click to go to the D-I Women home page... which is usually where I am. It'd be nice if this was more, er, touchy. Or, as a quick fix, if all of those links in the drop-down menu also appeared in the left or right sidebar.

I use Google Chrome for just about everything else, but find it does not work well with this site. Use good old Internet Explorer and am not experiencing any weirdness.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Getting back to the topic at hand, how's everyone feel about the team now that we're at break?

I'll admit being very nicely surprised that they have only the one loss and have a 6-point lead (with the same number of games played as 2nd-place Wisconsin) in the WCHA standings. It was sad to see the streak end, but it lasted longer than I had predicted in the other thread and the away-game winning streak is still intact for now.

I mentioned in the Patty Kaz thread that the Gopher scoring has really been spread out. It feels like a different player is stepping up every game. I know that some players are racking up points faster than others, but it's still amazing to see the team feeling on this squad; everyone is contributing and that's the main thing that has kept them rolling.

One additional thought... Despite the 5-1 margin of victory, I hope to not see another game like this past Sunday for the rest of the season. The gals cannot play like that against better opposition and hope to win. It was pretty brutal.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I think if GWH fans are honest they will admit to being pleasantly surprised at how well the team has done through the first half. The consensus before the season began was they would likely struggle some defensively, particularly on the blue line, until the incoming players gained experience. But they've managed to hold their opponents to an average of just 1.3 goals per game, which although higher than last year's season average of 0.9 is still excellent, especially considering they are without Bozek, Stecklein and Jalosuo - and of course Raty. Offensively they are down slightly, coincidentally by the same differential of 0.4 GPG, from 5.3 to 4.9 which I also think exceeds most expectations considering they are doing it without Amanda Kessel's 101 point production from a year ago. I think as the freshmen continue to gain experience the losses to graduation and the Olympics SHOULD become less of a factor and the team SHOULD continue to get better and build momentum in the second half. That remains to be seen, but based on what they've shown so far I'm very optimistic about the team's chances in the postseason. :)
