What are your thoughts for All-Americans on the Gophers for this year? Seems like they have four very strong candidates in Kessel, Brandt, Bozek and Raty. 1st Team?

Definitely a possibility, though I won't complain if Brandt or Bozek find themselves on the 2nd team.

As for today's game, Davis is out of the lineup after last night's collision. I expect her to be back for the series at Ohio State next weekend.

Watching on BTN. **** that's a nice arena. When Michigan adds women's hockey, I can only hope that somehow AD Dave Brandon can find room for a women's hockey facility.

It's not that Michigan doesn't have the money (they're in the biggest boom period in my lifetime), it's the fact that the athletic campus is packed.

Dear Gopher Sports Marketing,

Let me interject this here before the jubilant celebration induced by a SWEEP OF THE BULLDOGS gets out of hand.

Earlier this season I noticed the new mural on the wall behind section 15 of Gopher All-Americas.

Nice touch.

Today for the first time I took a close look.

It is "Rhonda Curtin" not "Curtain".

2002 First-Team All-WCHA, WCHA Defensive Player of the Year, WCHA Player of the Year, First Team All-America, Patty Kazmaier Finalist
2003 Team Captain, First-Team All-WCHA, WCHA Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-America
WCHA Team of the Decade (2000’s)

Better spelling seems to have been earned.

Just sayin'

Let the celebration begin.

Just takes one very rich (and very generous) alum!
I've always said that if I ever strike it rich, a women's hockey arena is like #1 on my list of donations for BC haha.

Was great to finally get to watch your girls this year. They do look good. I think a BC/Minnesota final would be a barn burner.

Brandt is ridiculous. She might be better than Kessel.

"It is "Rhonda Curtin" not "Curtain"."

And actually, she spells her first name without an "h": Ronda. They got that part right on the mural at least.

I noticed this the first time I saw the new mural, and made this point to both Frosty and the facilities manager earlier this season. I think they are planning to fix it, but as I understand it, it means redoing the whole mural :(

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Today was the first time all year I've really been nervous during a game. I thought the Gophers were fine through the first two periods. UMD's first goal was one of those fluky things that happens and Minnesota had all sorts of chances that they couldn't put in. I felt good going into the third up 2-1. The team played like they were just trying to protect a one goal lead. I'm okay with that, because they tend to be good at it. The power play looked lackluster but not too worrisome.

Then the combination of a nice play by McParland and a complete *** moment from Rachel Ramsey and not only was the game tied but the Gophers looked rattled. For the next 6-7 minutes they played like I haven't seen for almost an entire calendar year: passes to no one; multiple turnovers in the defensive zone. They looked completely out of sync. the Bulldogs put on serious pressure and I thought the first loss of the year was a real possibility. Never have I been as glad for a TV timeout as the one that came around the ten minute mark of the period. If there hadn't been one it would have been a good time for Frost to call his.

They looked completely different after that. Kessel, who hasn't looked healthy in a while, found an additional half step of speed and created a breakaway for the winning goal, violating my rule about Kessel breakaways in the process. They just fed off of the excitement and collapsed a building on UMD. I'm pleased that they found that top gear but there was that stretch where the search for it was like me looking for the car keys. Hopefully that experience was all the motivation they need.

And, actually, it was two TV timeouts in pretty rapid succession. Due to the Gopher power play, the "under 15 minute" timeout didn't occur until 10:45 remaining (because TV timeouts aren't taken during special teams play), and the "under 10 minute" timeout was shortly after that. I agree with your feelings on both counts there.

Here's another game recap, from the WCHA - MINNESOTA SWEEPS WEEKEND SERIES OVER MINNESOTA DULUTH WITH 6-2 WIN

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

My first chance to get to Ridder this season - wow!
Some random observations.
1) they are relentless
2) not sure I've ever see two players more in synch than Kessel & Brandt
3) they back-check hard. Really hard.
4) as good as they are offensively, they may be better defensively
5) did I mention they are relentless?

Can't wait to get back, they are fun to watch, and Ridder really is a tremendous venue

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I have two complaints about Ridder, both of which only become an issue as it starts to fill up:

1) The concourses really are not designed to handle a full house and it becomes a pain to navigate getting anywhere between periods;
2) There's nothing to distinguish the general admission seats from the reserved that give the GA ticket holders any idea where they are supposed to fit. Once it gets crowded that means that you have a lot of disputes between people who find someone in their seats and the people who are already sitting there that don't understand the policies and don't realize that they are sitting in a reserved seat.

There's nothing much to do about the first problem at this point, but the athletic department really needs to fix the second.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

My assumption was the benches with backs were GA and the chairs were the reserved seats. Correct?

That's correct, but my reserved section gets flooded with people who have no idea.
Tonight one of the people with a shirt proclaiming him to be "Event Staff" came down DURING PLAY and stood DIRECTLY IN MY LINE OF SIGHT while asking people who were already seated what section it was as he attempted to seat some people in the correct section but in the complete wrong end of the row.

Completely brain dead.

And STAFF.
