Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

Just win baby. Gophers would likely be as high as 12th if they finish 3-1, which also gives them the first round at home. I wouldn't see them playing their way out of the top 15 in that scenario.

Tall order though given recent play against PSU but hey this is the best time of the year.

Go Skippers today against Roseau. I'm sure that will be a popular opinion outside of Minnetonka. :D

The funny part is ESPN stated that Minnetonka and EP's main rival is the center of the center of the American hockey universe.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

From GPL message board:

Jim Dahl has provided updated material on college hockey ranked

With 4 games remaining, info as follows with my (not MINE, but the OP's own feelings afterward:

Win 0: ranked 20 or worse; need to win conference tournament
Win 1: ranked 19-20; need to win conference tournament
Win 2: ranked 16-18; need to win conference tournament
Win 3: ranked 12-14; would definitely need to win a game or two in B10 tournament
Win 4: ranked 9-11; would feel safe with 1 win in B10 tournament, but probably locked for an at large

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

#15 must be an astrophysics dilemma. ;) Jim Dahl is using Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) which assumes a specific and historically derived data set to calculate game outcomes and the maximum likelihood of a mean range of PWR. The problem with MLE in this case is the data is interdependent, not independent, and therefore it cannot take into account every permutation nor current trends. A quick check and IMO Jim's recent update of the Gopher's PWR range of #13-#15 based upon winning 2-3 games/4 is the more unbiased and accurate estimation at this stage.

You want to see something really crazy on that latest update, check out St. Cloud. They are currently below .500 on the season and sit in the 27 spot in the PWR. They have six regular season games left. They go 6-0 they can find themselves as high as the #6 spot in the PWR.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

Not at all surprising about SCSU. Quality wins bonus, plus thoe 6 wins would be huge....

Same with the Gophers. Give them a win and a tie vs PSU this weekend, and, compared to the rest of the table right now (in other words, if NO ONE ELSE PLAYED), they jump to #12. The bubble, as always, is tremendously volatile. There really isn't much reason to even think about it right now. After this weekend, then it starts to make sense. Jim Dahl might start running Monte Carlos at that point, and we would have a better idea. But, right now, too much season yet to be played. The historical truth seems to be that an RPI of .5400 puts you right on the cusp of the NCAAs, barring strange conf tourney results. That requires a W/T vs PSU and a split with Michigan.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

Quotes from Gopher players and coach in the paper this morning:

“We wouldn’t want to be in any other situation,” junior winger Brannon McManus said. “It’s what we want to play for — moments like these.”

“What we’re trying to drill home is they whupped our butts earlier in the year,” Gophers coach Bob Motzko said, pointing to Penn State’s November sweep by 8-2 and 6-3 scores in Minneapolis. “Let’s see if we’ve closed the gap. … It’s a great measuring stick to see how far we’ve come.”

“I’m not a fan of Penn State at all. They’ve definitely got our number, my number,” said Gophers senior defenseman Ryan Zuhlsdorf, recalling the end of the 2017-18 season, when Penn State won four consecutive games in State College to deny Minnesota an NCAA tournament berth. “We’re the top two teams in the Big Ten right now. This weekend is ginormous for us or them. We’re really hungry to take over No. 1.”

“They kind of kicked us around a bit at the start of the year,” McLaughlin said. “… We want payback for that because there was no need for that.”

“You can be angry all you want. You’ve got to be a better hockey team,” he (Motzko) said. “We can’t make mistakes. They’ve got too much talent, too many older kids that have been through their battles.’’

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

At 8:54 CST, the score is 1-1, and the shots are 35-10 for Penn State. One would think that a narrow escape for 2 periods would motivate the lads for the 3rd.
Right?

Gopher D played it tighter in the second. Good thing LaFontaine is on his game tonight. Transition looks ok...just get pucks on net.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

LaFontaine needed to be awesome tonight (54 SOGA) or this game was an L. Gopher D made too many errant passes and the turnovers kept Penn's high powered offense surging back on the attack. I thought Nanne looked fired up, blocked shots and was tenacious up the ice to open the scoring for the Gophers. The offense didn't really click until the 3rd, but still struggled solving the Penn D to get more pucks on net. Gophers are winless in 7 straight games now on Penn home ice. Tough fought game tonight, let's see if the guys have legs tomorrow night for the W.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

Jack LaFontaine's 54 saves was not enough to be one of the Three Stars tonight. #Gophers

Saw this tweet. Unreal. I don't know if they can even spell "hockey."

The padding of SOGs has been known, and tonight:
1. SOG for MN was at 10. They then scored. SOG remained at 10.
2. The goal horn sounded off prematurely not once, but TWICE, despite immediate wave-offs from the ref.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

I stand sort of corrected.

Laffy did get 2nd star, but Pedo announces only their players to the fans. For some stupid reason. Probably because they are candy-arses who live in their own little dreamworld. Jesus, that's even worse.

Good reasoning on padding SOGs? :D How dumb can they be and still breathe.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2019-2020: Motzko 2.0

Tyler Nanne earned his C last night with a textbook definition of an offensive/defenseman. This is how it's done!
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">THAT'S OUR CAPTAIN <br><br>Tyler Nanne turns defense into offense and we're all tied up! <a href="https://t.co/KU44ScjTwI">pic.twitter.com/KU44ScjTwI</a></p>— Minnesota Men’s Hockey (@GopherHockey) <a href="https://twitter.com/GopherHockey/status/1231048496964390914?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 22, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Critical game tonight with lots of playoff implications. A Gopher win tonight puts them in first place with two games in hand and eliminates PSU's chances to capture the B1G title. If ASU (vs Wis), and Western Mich. (vs UMD) both lose and the Gophers win, we'll gain a couple PWCs and a PWR spike to #12-13 going into the final series with Mich at home. The guys need to find their legs tonight for the W.
