Minnesota Duluth @ Wisconsin-Madison: Playoffs?! Playoffs!

Re: Minnesota Duluth @ Wisconsin-Madison: Playoffs?! Playoffs!

Early for Hockey talk, but a little perspective on this week's matchup:

  • The Badgers are 54-14-0 (.794) all-time at home in the WCHA playoffs.
  • Wisconsin sports a perfect first round record all-time against UMD, never having dropped even one game.
  • The Badgers have been crowned WCHA Tournament Champions 11 times to UMD's 3.
  • In recent history, (let's take the last 7 seven years for a completely random and arbitrary number) Wisconsin is perfect in having never lost a home WCHA series, while UMD is also perfect in never having won on the road.

Seems like a trend is developing. :p

Two can play this game :)

UMD has won more Broadmoors in the last four years than UW has won in the last 16 seasons.

It has been tough for UMD to win on the road in the playoffs because have been hosting the last three years in a row.

UMD has made it to four Final Fives in the last four years, while UW has only made it twice.

How many times have UMD and UW played in the playoffs? I'm gonna guess...once :D

Re: Minnesota Duluth @ Wisconsin-Madison: Playoffs?! Playoffs!

Looks like were due! Lets GO!

I can completely see how it might appear that way on the surface.

However, going by the criteria listed (which was selected solely for it's high empirical quality using only the latest scientific methods, btw) UMD winning would actually be a huge anomaly, a complete outlier, in other words; A statistical probability so unlikely it cannot even be considered. The only logical thing to be said is that the Bulldogs are 'due' to lose.

On the other hand, statistically, Bucky wins the WCHA playoffs about once every 4.8 years. As the Badgers last hoisted the Broadmoor in 1998, Bucky is more than THREE times overdue to do it again. It is clear that it is quickly becoming statistically impossible for this trend to continue.

Re: Minnesota Duluth @ Wisconsin-Madison: Playoffs?! Playoffs!

I was shocked to find out that UW @ Madison has not hoisted the Broadmoor since then.

Pfft! WI is 4-0 all time in TWO first round matchups. Ha! I don't just go around cherry picking random statistics to support my team like some people do!

And UMD isn't due for another Broadmoor until 2028. :p

You're making the UND SID and Schlossman blush with your cherry picking stats...

What years did UMD play UW? I'm gonna really laugh if it is before the 1980's.

Re: Minnesota Duluth @ Wisconsin-Madison: Playoffs?! Playoffs!

I'm conflicted between my desire to see the Badgers backdoor their way into the NCAAs and my sorrow in just wanting this all to be over with.

If a loss guaranteed a new coach and direction, I'd have to at least consider rooting for it.

Otherwise, just win baby. How fun would it be to play spoiler up in St Paul?

Unfortunately, that's what we've got at this point. Pathetic.

'78 and '91 are the only two UW-UMD first round matchups. We won one tournament out of those two times. So clearly we have a 50/50 shot this year of winning the Broadmoor. But taking into consideration the overdue-ness of it, more like 90/10.

It's --> Science!<-- :)

Personally I cannot stand these historical stats, they are totally meaningless and are no predictor on the future. Here's some pertinent stats:

Last 10 games:
UW 6-3-1
UMD 4-2-4

Special teams:
PP UW 12%, UMD 24%
PK UW 80%, UMD 82%

30 point scorers:
UW 1, UMD 3

20 point scorers:
UW 4, UMD 1

Goaltending Tandems:
UW GAA 1.94/2.00 - S% .928/.926
UMD GAA 2.72/2.83 - S% .900/.894

UW has scored 20 more even strength goals than UMD, UMD has scored 27 more ppg's than UW.

You didn't fact-check your cherry-picking well. Last time UMD won the Broadmoor, 2009, they won on the road at CC in the first round. (The last time we were in the road in the first round.)

Re: Minnesota Duluth @ Wisconsin-Madison: Playoffs?! Playoffs!

Badgers will sweep, baby!
Besides this Cheesy fan... all Badger fans want UMD to win. Mr. Cheese will be the only Badger fan at the KC rooting for Wisconsin.

Oh, I'll be there.

Big picture though. I want a new coach and a new direction.

Given the choice, I'd take that over a most-likely meaningless series victory.

I'm not presented with that choice though. So I will be there and rooting for us to win.

This team still has much to play for this season as an at-large NCAA bid is a real possibility.

That said, I would like nothing more than to have any confidence at all that the future is going to be better, but alas I have no hope of a brighter future for Badger hockey. The results have been just good enough to allow the status quo to continue.

That said, no possible outcome would surprise me from this weekend. But I do expect that hockey (or something resembling hockey) will be played on Sunday.

Re: Minnesota Duluth @ Wisconsin-Madison: Playoffs?! Playoffs!

If they can get through this weekend, the Badgers will no longer "have to" play at home and gain road-ice advantage for the rest of the playoffs.

Well sure, but if you're going to go around insisting on the use of actual factual facts in this discussion, there's going to be trouble.

UMD is practically in WI, I can see a crossover fanbase. Now only if their uniform colors weren't so friggin ugly.....I will never get over that.
