Minnesota Cup

Re: Minnesota Cup

SCSU in terms of rivalry is still behind Michigan, Holy Cross and the New York Islanders

Re: Minnesota Cup

In Minnesota's defense they have to make money or the school will have to drop other athletic programs.
Um wrong.

Minnesota needs to make money so they can pour more money into the football program, so the can make more money so they can pour more money into the football program, so the can make more money so they can pour more money into the football program, so the can make more money so they can pour more money into the football program, so the can make more money so they can pour more money into the football program, so the can make more money so they can pour more money into the football program, so the can make more money so they can pour more money into the football program......[repeat 10,000 times].

Once you understand this, the BCS makes perfect sense.

Minnesota has a football team?

So, the football team is relying on the hockey program to make money?

Yep, sounds like Minnesota.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Who are bigger rivals to Minny than UMD and SCSU? And don't even bother saying Michigan and Michigan State. I'm not drinking that Kool-Aid.

You don't think new rivalries are going to be established? All the rest of the Minnesota teams had or were going to have inter conference rivalries until UMD and then SCSU decided to go rogue with UND and Denver. So obviously Denver, Miami, and UNO are bigger rivals to SCSU then Bemidji and Mankato, right?

Minnesota needs a rivalry with UMD and SCSU a lot less then SCSU and UMD need a rivalry with Minnesota. That's just a fact.

Re: Minnesota Cup

I don't blame the Gophers for anything. My whole problem is if every team can't be in this thing every year it will be lame. Then it is only a special event for the Gophers, not the other teams involved. If it was a beanpot type event where every team played every year and every team got X amount of seats it would be cool. We all know it won't end up that way so the other four teams fans lose out. I know the schools make money and that is all they care about, but it doesn't make it right.
SCSU, UMD, Bemidji, and Mankato DON'T HAVE AS LARGE A FANBASE AS THE GOPHERS DO. Tickets will not be equal. The arena might be empty for this event anyway, but it will definitely be empty if they allow only equal number of fans from each team in. As much as you hate to admit it, the only reason this tourney would be successful is if the Gophers are in it and will be able to provide the majority of the fans. Just because the other MN school have smaller fanbases doesn't make this "unfair".

This is true. And I can't believe people can't get their head around this.

If the WCHA would have stayed together minus UW & UM, things would have been far better off. I think UW and UM would have been more willing to work with the WCHA teams. In my opinion, there was a huge over reaction to the situation. But this is where we are.

The WCHA Final Five was arguably the best tournament in college hockey. A huge part of that is the location of the tournament and the love of the game in Minnesota. Anyone who thinks that a MN Cup style tournament will not be successful, underestimates the support of college hockey in this state.

Bottom line, the Gophers did not start this mess. But despite the surplus of pessimism, they are taking measures that will benefit all of the Minnesota's D1 hockey programs. Are they looking out for themselves at the same time? Hell yes! Why wouldn't they?

P.S. They will travel to instate NC games for a very simple reason. $$$. They will have NC games to fill and these will offer very cheap trips for their program. Just do not expect to have them in your building every year.

It's time to get over the complex that many fans have with the Gophers. Enjoy college hockey.

I'm sorry, but I really don't think you are cut out for posting on this site. Reason and logic have no place here. If you don't ooze hatred and disdain for opposing programs, you will just never fit in. Perhaps you and Puck Swami should form an alternate site with rational discussion as the mainstay.

ETA: I think SF23 could probably join you as well, but not many others of us would fit in.

Funny, I was getting at that but obviously I didn't make a point to say anything. The fb, bb, ic teams are the only programs currently in the athletic program making money. I totally agree with your comment. Which is why the Gophers are on a different level than the rest of the Minnesota/North Dakota schools.

Because the other schools only have one sport that makes money.

No, but Noth Dakota and Duluth are bigger rivals than Bemidji and Mankato for SCSU. Not trying to pick a fight, agreed with most of what you said, I'm just sayin'...

Anyone who thinks that a MN Cup style tournament will not be successful, underestimates the support of college hockey in this state.

I am not saying it can't be successful, but it also isn't a can't-miss prospect either. The last time the X hosted something really similar the attendance and atmosphere sucked. Worst crowd for what I anticipated ever in college hockey, and that's saying something.

Then SCSU and UMD have nothing to whine about in this thread. Yet most of the whining is coming from their fanbases. Mankato and Bemidji were the ones that got left out in the cold here.

Re: Minnesota Cup

They are on different levels. Because SCSU's hockey team is the only sport that makes money at the school. So their hockey team has a greater need to make money than the U of M. The U of M has a football team and basketball team that make money.

Onto your next retarded theory.

The Gopher hockey program needs to make money to help fund a BCS Division one football program curretnly no other school in the state of Minnesota has a BCS athletic program. The Wall Street Journal currently shows us the Minnesota Gophers program is worth $148.3 million dollars. It is worth than all the Minnesota state hockey schools combined. If hockey, bb, or fb don't make money the school will have to cut programs. Which is why the Gophers have to continue to make money in hockey. The Gophers have to look out for their own interests. They only care so much about the other Minnesota schools.

This may be true. However, the Minnesota Hockey Showcase was in addition to the WCHA Final Five. Now that the Final Five will be no more, I think we will see many of the fans that attended that tournament on a regular basis will be filling the seats for the new tournament. I could be wrong, but I am pretty convinced the parties involved will knock this out of the park.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Maturi out as Gophers athletic director

Joel Maturi said Thursday that he is retiring as the University of Minnesota’s athletics director as of June 30 and will remain with the school as an assistant to President Eric Kaler.

Maturi and the school’s president have a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. at TCF Bank Stadium.

Maturi made his intentions known in an e-mail addressed to student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters.

“It is with mixed emotions that I share with you that ... I will announce my retirement as the director of athletics at the University of Minnesota effective June 30th,” Maturi said in his e-mail. “There is sadness because I have enjoyed every day of this 10-year journey. There is excitement because President Kaler has asked me to remain next year as a special assistant to the president.”

Not entirely. If the Gophers never set foot in St. Cloud again, I'll be upset. They have a 20-game regular season schedule and if they can't ever make it back up to Cloud, we have reason to be. I'm not in the camp that they need to play us every year, I understand its about $ and the Gophers gotta take care of their own first. Hell, Gopher games haver personally lost a lot of their luster for me, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a 16-year-old kid who will go to SCSU in 2 years that doesn't deserve to see that. Even if its a once out of every four years deal. If an SCSU student graduates in 4 years (yeah right!) they should at least get to go to one series in their college career where they host the Gophers. And I'm not saying that this tourney will stop that from happening, but if it does, then we have reason to be upset. Not saying we should "whine," but some grumblings are valid.

I hope you're right, but I'm not buying into it yet. Buying tickets, yes. Buying stock, no.
