Minnesota @ Colorado College 12/7 & 12/8: The potheads vs the *******

Re: Minnesota @ Colorado College 12/7 & 12/8: The potheads vs the *******

Far too many guys puck watching in the third period. Far too many guys beat to loose pucks in our zone because they were standing still. Far too little puck support. Far too many guys stripped of pucks because they weren't strong on the puck. Happened twice in our zone to Alt, and one almost lead to a goal. Far too many turnovers because our guy's heads weren't in the game.

The Marshall turnover when he whiffed on a one timer (too many of those by too many guys too) and then tried to pinch to hold the zone was a momentum killer. But when you lose momentum you have to get to work and get it back. Instead of getting pucks in deep and getting our forecheck going again, it's almost as though we went into a shell. Has happened far too many times this season.

This game reminded me too much of that Final Five disaster we had last season. Question is, do they learn from this? Cannot fall asleep on ANY lead at this level.

But it has been a constant theme this year, taking portions of the game off and letting your opponent back into the game. They have been really lucky so far that it has not really bitten them in the *** yet. Denver, North Dakota and bc - if they smell blood in the water they will stand on our throats and lop it off with their skate blade.

The positive spin on all this is they are 11-3-3 (many teams would love that record) and have not really put it all together yet (Bjugs officially struggling). That to me is huge, this team can still go a long way, they get that first line cranking like we know they will, watch out.

AMEN.... And the Final 5 cluster is exactly want is in store if they can't wake the f up and stay awake.

Hey at least BJugs got ALL of that pipe.... And I think the only way the first line wakes up is to put budish with rauser and BJugs

Hard to complain about getting 3 points on the road, even though they clearly let the 4th get away from them.

Going into the series and maybe even tonight's game I would have agreed with you, but there is no way they should have let this win (and sweep on the road) slip away. They completely dominated CC and should have put the game away. Bjugstad's miss at the open net and Marshall's poor judgment at the offensive blueline were just two of many costly failures. And at our end, Wilcox gave up an uncharacteristic juicy rebound to give CC a critical late goal.

Still sitting well in the conference and I don't think it's worth getting worked up over.

You are right, the sky is not falling; it just feels that way at the moment.;) CC kept battling, and you have to give them credit for not giving up.

Maybe there will be a silver lining. It could leave a slightly bitter taste in the Gophers' mouths, and give them some extra incentive to have a strong second half. I'm already looking forward to the game with BC.

Just look over at the mess at Wisconsin, and smile, and be Happy.

Then don't. I'm a little frustrated, and will take the opportunity to vent a little. If that's ok with you.

I posted before you so not sure how my comment could have anything to do with you. And fwiw I get the frustration - I'm disappointed they let that point get away.

Re: Minnesota @ Colorado College 12/7 & 12/8: The potheads vs the *******

The Gophers clearly outplayed CC in the first, which I thought was one of the best periods of hockey they've put together all season. But then they let CC slowly back in the game in the 2nd and 3rd with some very sloppy play, poor positioning and lack of offensive effort. Credit CC for their resilience to salvage at least a point at home, and showing why they're the overall top scoring team in the WCHA so far this season, especially in the third period. Hopefully losing that point won't come back to haunt the Gophers later in the season.

The same thing happened to BC the other night who gave up a two goal third period lead and the tying goal with 10 seconds left against a mediocre Providence team. It shows once again it's not so much about how you start, but about how you finish.

In retrospect, the Gophers obviously have lots of room for improvement to become a full 60 minute team with a "killer instinct" to put teams away. I was hoping they'd go into the break tied for 1st in the WCHA, but I'll take the 3 pts. on the road...still good, with hope for more improvement going into the break. The second half should be quite a ride...

Go Gophers! :)

Sorry, probably shouldn't have been so snide, but I came here to vent a little, and was annoyed to read a post saying we shouldn't get worked up when we just blew a 3 goal 3rd period lead. I shouldn't have taken that frustration out on you.

Agreed. Don mentioned before the series that games against top opponents expose some of your weaknesses, which is good. You want to fix those now, instead of having them pop up late in the season. They should have more than a few coaching points to focus on during the break.

Re: Minnesota @ Colorado College 12/7 & 12/8: The potheads vs the *******

If you told me we would get 3 points this weekend I would be more then happy. If you told me that after the 1st tonight? Ugh.

That being said? Still happy with 3. CC is a hard-fighting team. Credit to them tonight. Helluva series. Now I am going to go snort a dozen lines of yayo just to relax my nerves. ;)

Re: Minnesota @ Colorado College 12/7 & 12/8: The potheads vs the *******

I came into thus weekend hoping split. In that regard, I am happy.

Giving up a three goal lead in the final frame is unacceptable, regardless of the opponent. I cursed Marshall's name for the first time this season. Right when he went forward instead of back after heeling that shot I shouted "*******"

Yes, Marshall made a bad mistake on that play. With a comfotable lead and in that situation, he should have played it conservatively and backed up, instead of moving forward and trying to make a play. No question, mainly his fault on that one goal.

But it's only natural to pin the blame on a D when he makes a mistake that leads to your opponent scoring an imprtant goal. However a forward, IMO, is just as at fault when he doesn't convert on a wide open, point blank opportunity, like Bjustad and Rau (and a couple of others) had in tonight's game. If these guys had been able to convert on some golden opportunities earlier on, the outcome of this game would have never been in doubt.

Re: Minnesota @ Colorado College 12/7 & 12/8: The potheads vs the *******

Just to be clear, I am not blaming the dropped point on Marshall. I agree that the boys need to hit the net more consistently in golden opportunities.

That is what really went wrong tonight. And I'm not just pointing the finger at Marshall. CC's 3rd goal was a similar situation (although through the neutral zone) where a Gopher (can't remember who) tried to jump up to pressure the puck, but ended up jumping right past the play. It led to an odd man 3 on 2 rush, and the extra man for CC found the rebound and the back of the net.

There were other mistakes tonight, for sure. But mistakes happen in every game, period.
Those 2 are the ones that led to unnecessary goals and ultimately cost a point in the standings.

I would add, it would have been nice if MN had kept attacking, but you have to give credit to CC. You knew they weren't just going to mail it in in the 3rd, and they didn't. They picked up their effort and made things more difficult for the Gophers, and the Gophers obliged by making some poor decisions that led to being outnumbered on the rush coming back.

This is what I hope happens. I hope tDon & Co don't let the boys forget about this one all break long. This one should not sit well with anyone and I hope this becomes motivation to bring it every night and every shift after the break.

This. If they learn from this, then this frustrating collapse can have a positive effect on the second half.

And the good news(or bad news depending how it plays out) is that we will find out right off the bat once the break is over. I'm assuming BC will be the type of team that will make you pay for sleepwalking. And I'm not looking past Air Force either. Important non-conference games!!
