Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

Re: Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

Yeah RD, you know me... And I still can't figure how you're into UNO hockey...

I'm trying to figure how to respond appropriately to the "MN thinks they're god's gift to hockey" statement... I think that started after the North Stars left and Minnesotans realized that they didn't have a team to root for. Everyone drank the kool-aid when the Wild used the "State of Hockey" tag... I find it silly, but I'm not a Wild fan, so it doesn't bother me...

The only Minnesota-born players that were worth anything that played for BSU have graduated years ago.... Bryan Grand, Gary Sargent, Joel Otto, Mike Alexander.... can't think of anyone else.... None but Sargent and Otto made a name for themselves in the NHL....

Can any Beaver fans think of anyone I missed.... Olympics or Pro players from MN on our team? They're mostly Canadian. Not that that is a bad thing... lol

Gee, the fact that you have that idiotic "State of Hockey" line under your name illudes to it as all minny residents think they are Gods gift to hockey. Also your tag of RIP-Kirby says that.

And FYI, the only true U of M is The University of Michigan. minnehaha is only an also ran....

lol, that because the state of Michigan is god's gift eh? lol...

Minny folks not nearly as bad as the Michigan folks...least over all the years coming up thru youth/midget/junior hockey...

Couple of things to note.

Officials could be up in the air. NCAA won't allow officials to work the game if they worked either conference so unless both teams are from that conference CCHA and CHA refs are out. At least the CHA uses CCHA officials some of the time. Philo and Langseth worked the CHA final. I'm not sure about all the CHA games though since the conference covers such a huge geographic footprint. So CCHA officials may need to be avoided. I'm guessing to avoid inevitable conflicts in who can work the games the refs won't be CCHA refs or anyone who worked CHA games.

The ice and boards at Fort Wayne are d e a d, dead. At least for every game I've seen Notre Dame play there that was the case. The boards almost seem absorbent as pucks seems to hit them and just carry along behind and around the net, and the ice seemed soft to me when ND has played there.

And speaking of speed, I believe speed is what has UM where they are (well, that and generous placement by the NCAA :p ;) ). I think the key to BSU will be slowing them down from the tops of the faceoff circles in the UM zone to the same area in the BSU zone. BSU has the style and discipline to do just that, but if they try to play UM one-on-one, they play into their hands. I think Bemidji has some guys than can move, but Michigan is loaded with both forwards and defensemen who can fly. I think this is where MU failed to beat them last week. They were scorched in the transition game. Miami and Michigan are fairly even in talent but play differently and Miami tried to play Michigan's game and got burnt.

The key to Miami winning is likely as simple as playing their best game for 60 minutes. Huntsville is on a high note, and playing well but likely doesn't have the ammunition to skate with Miami for a full game. Notre Dame nearly fell victim to them in 2007 because once they got up 2-0 they quit playing their game. They watched UAH swap goalies after Macnicol (sp?) gave up 2 goals on NDs first 3 shots and figured it was in the bag. Even with UAH being assessed 5 straight penalties, Notre Dame did not skate hard and seemed unwilling to try to bury them. It was almost as if they were waiting to win instead of trying to win. UAH tied it up and it took nearly 40 minutes of OT for Notre Dame to win it. And they had nothing left for MSU the next night and still lost by just a single goal.

I also wonder if the lighter schedule for CHA teams (UAH has played 9 fewer games and has had a week off) will help them. It probably won't matter, but it won't hurt. Miami needs to realize it takes 60 minutes at this stage and if they don't, it will be a dog fight. I know every fan always says "don't worry, my guys will be ready," but Miami has looked just a little off now for a few games and I am very curious to see how they come out this weekend. My picks are for Miami and Michigan to win Saturday and Miami to win Sunday. But don't forget in October I picked Notre Dame to have people in Fort Wayne who would be dressed to play hockey, not dressed in suits.

Fair assesment, Miami is a puck possesion team. They are not a transition team that can go up and down the ice with much success like others can. In Michigan earlier in the year, they did that. Slowed the game down, got Michigan frustrated and capitalized. That didn't happen Friday at all.

Also I think this Miami team knows what it takes to win in the tourny, since 18 of 20 guys dressed played in the tourny last season. However with the way things have gone jury is still out on if they will show up. Logically I find it hard to believe they won't be ready with the mission they have been on this season but you never know. 3 of the 4 1 seeds feel in round one last season including Notre Dame and Michigan who were both playing really really well going into the tournament.

The ice can be variable because that part of the building also plays host to a D-league NBA squad, IPFW sporting events, and numerous other things. If there's other crap going on around a hockey game and its a quick turnaround, the ice can be soft. If they've got the time to set the ice properly, it'll be good and hard. I've seen Komet games where it goes both ways depending on how much time they've had.

It looks like they cleared the schedule for that part of the building and are giving this their full attention given that it's pretty much the biggest media event they've had there to date that I can recall. And that should bode well for good ice as they know what they're doing with the Komets tradition in Fort Wayne. The city knows and loves its hockey.

but...we are God's gift to hockey.

Re: Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

Curious to see how that ice surface is. If it's crappy, well, that's just fine with UAH --- the ice in Huntsville is, as you'd expect, fair to terrible.

GFM

Well if that's the case, I think BSU has competed on a lot of crappy ice this year :D Should be used to it by now.

Re: Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

Hey, is Miami fully healthy or is there anyone either out or questionable going into the tourney?

Don't think there are any injuries. At least nothing that I have heard about. As many other redhawk fans have said, most likely Knapp will probably be starting over Reichard because of the way he has played over the past couple games, and how Knapp has been playing godly.

Other than that, I don't see anything else special going on, maybe some Steve Mason??? lol who knows?! ;) :D

Re: Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

Would you guys just do us all a favor and put umichhockeyrulz on ignore?

Is anybody else going to Ft Wayne?

Re: Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

That would be Derek Puppa.

GFM <-- off by most standards, but on medication ;)
Thats ok, we're all a little mad here anyways. ;) :D

Not exactly true.

The University of Memphis
The University of Montana
The University of Missouri
The University of Maryland
The University of Miami
The University of Maine
The University of Mary
The Univeristy of Montevallo
The University of Manitoba
The University of Manchester
The University of Massachusetts

Nobody exactly has a full on patent and title on the whole U of M thing anyways. :p

Re: Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

My guess, regarding the officials and what conferences they will come from:

You will see two CCHA crews in Worcester, two ECEC crews in St. Paul, one HE and one WCHA crew in Fort Wayne and one WCHA and one HE crew in Albany with a ECAC crew on hand in case UNH and Denver both win Friday.

Re: Midwest Regional, Miami vs. Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State vs. Michigan

Well as a couple of people have noted earlier I think I would rather see the HE crew after that outdoor game in Madison.

On a happier officiating note it's nice to have a game thread that isn't 75% full of Michigan officiating conspiracy theories....well done everybody.

IF Miami makes it past UAH in what is sure to be a hard fought game that can go either way, I will most likely make it up on Sunday.

Bold letters to appease woofing gods.
