Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Well that outcome was awful. That's the second game in a row that was a 1 goal game where lazy passing in the defensive zone lead to a turnover and a goal.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Just watched the UM produced weekly highlight- Red made a really good point about your team, and previous games- you guys were very, very injured- not being able to dress 8 of your players. That's changed now, right? I'm leaning to the idea that your team isn't as bad as your record would imply. Or our recent wins against your team. Could be pretty close.

As for the PWR- this discussion has come up on Rivals, too- one calcualtion suggests that we could make it in as one of the lowest bubble teams if we finish second and even lose on Friday night. That will count on all of the ranked teams to win their conference, sure. I don't see it.

I hope the team thinks like previous seasons- win the dang tournament if you want in.

The 10 goal game Ohio state was missing 8 regulars. 5 were out injured and 3 were sick with the flu including Frey but i dont use that as an excuse. They didnt play defense that night at all and that has been the problem all season long. Last night for once they went all out on the PK and blocked a ton of shots only allowing 1 shot on goal during the 4 Michigan PP's. They also did a much better job of not turning over the puck than they have all season long.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Thanks to the entire B1G splitting this weekend, we are now back in a tie for first.

Still- have a LONG way to go. With those kinds of turn overs, yikes. Sinelli- dude- put something on those passes. Come on- I know you are a forward, but you are also a senior- so PASS the puck. Way too many turn overs.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Who here is concerned about Wisconsin?

Well, they did manage to get a win each of the last two weekends...which is more than can be said for the rest of their conference play.

I don't know. If Michigan plays the way we know they can, I'm not worried. Then again, if Michigan plays the way we know they have at times, it could be an interesting series.
I really enjoyed the parts of the Wisconsin game where we discovered our best defensive plan is to just never leave the offensive zone.

Also, so everyone knows, Friday's game is Don Cherry night, so find your most outrageous suit coat and dress up. I encourage everyone to participate, not just the student section.

Good thing we had a game to focus on, or we would have noticed Jim Harbaugh sitting somewhere in the bleachers (not a luxo box) or Denard Robinson wandering around signing autographs, taking pictures, and enjoying the game beind the two benches.

Welcome to Yost, where we assume you care more about football past and future than the sport you came to watch. Also, allow us to assault you with some piped in music. We'll even turn the volume up over the cheering student section, we wouldn't want our fans to actually cheer.

Is it still as bad as it was earlier in the season at Yost as far as canned music and promotions over the PA? Noticed a number of your posters had commented on this. Complaints were rampant on the ND thread as well as on other ND-centric boards. Letters (one was mine) to the associate AD in charge of hockey were delivered as well documenting the far too many ways the experience at the Compton sucked (the mediocre hockey didn't even enter that picture). Since then, I have to say we have noticed an improved environment. The crappy "stadium jock-rock" has largely been abandoned in favor of letting the pep band play. The number of promotions seems to have been toned down, and when we do have canned music the volume has returned to a more comfortable level. Hopefully a formal, organized appeal would have a similar effect at Yost. The band, team and traditions are all you need at that place for the right kind of college hockey environment.

I'll probably write a letter as the season ends.

It got a *little* better, but for most of us, any canned music is too much. But I even hate the goal horn.

You can definitely add my name to your letter alfa. My sentiments exactly on that stupid horn. It's not like we're in Southern California and need to be prompted when to cheer...

Agreed. Luckily we never went down that road. Very collegiate atmosphere.

Yes. There are ads at every tv time out. I would assume those contracts go at least through the season and nothing can be done about that at this point. I just wish they were shorter. It's the canned music that angered me this weekend. The band finished playing the Victors, the students finished their cheering and there was still a minute+ to puck drop. Rather than the band playing something, they pipe in crap.
What I'm finding most annoying is that the athletic department believes to not have constant noise is a sin. As soon as there is silence canned music gets played on the loudspeakers. So, say there's an icing call, the band does a short cheer but it finishes before the puck is dropped. Even though all the players are in position for the faceoff, and the linesman is already there with the puck, we get 2.5 seconds of techno music.

I've seen Michigan play in 6 different venues this year, and I'd have Yost only slightly less annoying than Joe Louis Arena for ads and canned music. I was shocked that Wisconsin bothered with canned music, especially when it was so obvious it killed the atmosphere. Their band plays and the fans cheer/dance and are generally excited. As soon as the canned music came on, it was just flat.

Switching the topic from my hatred of emulating pro/minor league atmosphere at college games....so, Downing is suspended for Friday's game thanks to his 3rd misconduct of the year. :( I understand that he earned his reputation, but through my maize and blue tinted glasses that looked like a clean shoulder to shoulder hit where the opponent got lit up for playing with his head down.

That was a somewhat questionable call. Even the TV announcers didn't get it. The only thing might be that after contact was made Downing followed through with his arm making his elbow go up. Downing is JMFJ 2.0 as far as purely getting called on his rep. Don't get me wrong, he is no saint but still...

I think the shocking thing may be that Wisconsin has any atmosphere at all this season.

But I digress. Please continue.

I'm in the same boat. I think the scariest thing about this weekend is not knowing which Michigan team will show up. I think starting hot each night will be key. We can't let a team like Wisco hang around.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Racine looked great last night. He stole that shutout- made some really huge saves.

That first goal- almost top shelf over the goalie- would have been a great shot. Interesting to have that come from a pass off a skate.

Second goal was not much less fluky- with the goalie flailing, and Zack finding enough space beneath him.

Officiating was horrible. our first PP was the result of a pretty clear cross check that we should have served. Good thing there wasn't a fight- as the refs really let the game progress to have one.

I was talking to another fan on my way out and he was surprised how chippy it was and the refs weren't calling much. We both talked about how we expect there to be a fight this evening (afternoon?). Hopefully the refs are looking to keep it under control.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Wow, we swept. And somehow are in the lead for the B1G.

Once again, the ref's were pretty bad- thankfully, both teams didn't take anything personally. Two nights in a row, a pretty easy cross check on us was not called. Then some pretty questionable ones were called. Can't figure that out at all. Again, thankful that the teams didn't take that out on each other (for the most part).

Compher with a hat trick! Making mask night rather good timing. His first goal was very sweet- barely in time for the pass and hard angle.

Missed the first goal, but someone told us it was weak. Other than that, Racine looked good, again. Maybe we found a goalie?

Call me crazy, but I've always been high on Racine. Sure he's been inconsistent at times, but over the past 2 years he hasn't gotten much help. I'm glad he came up clutch on Friday and turned out another solid performance. He does seem to be at his best in these big games/big pressure situations. Really thought he was going to singlehandedly take us to the tournament 2 years ago.

Anyway, still a lot of sloppy turnovers in the D-zone this weekend. We can probably get away with it against Wisconsin (no offense), but that's not going to fly against PSU and State. I will say, from what I heard this weekend, it's nice that the players seem to be buying into the "defense first" mentality. Playoff time always brings out the best in teams, and it's easier to play shutdown defense than it is to score 5-7 goals per game. We have a long ways to go, but it's good to see some defensive improvements.
