Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Right now, I think #1 priority is to not have to play nex Thursday- 4 points. If we get 6, we do win the regular season, regardless. 3 points and we need to see the same thing happen in St. Paul. 2 points and we need a TON of help. 1 or 0 means we play Thursday without question.

What games would those be? There aren't any college games in St. Paul until the WCHA Final Five on March 20. I think you may be confused with the location of the University of Minnesota.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Hey everyone. Out of towner here going to my first Michigan game this weekend. I'm curious if there is an iconic food I need to try while there. Chicago has deep dish pizza, Philly has the cheese steak, etc. So how about around campus? Is there a unique or popular food to match? Or if no specific food how about a landmark restaurant?

Thanks for any suggestions. I'm looking forward to this!

close enough for us. Should I use MSP?

And why does it matter?

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

I somehow managed to find STUDENT TICKETS to buy for Saturday night. I hope that I can handle it. It's a sparty game and I typically lose my voice twice during those games anyway. Now that it will mean so much coupled with my utter HATRED for anything east landfill will mean that I won't make it even one period before I lose my voice.

This is gonna be so much fun. Who says you can't go home again?

we need homecoming for hockey? That would be cool.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Zingermans.

this would be the top one. It's the place every visiting famous person goes to.

It's a good deli.

If you are ok with a super greasy burger, another iconic place is Blimpy Burger. It's very odd. When it's original spot was forced to close, there were lines around the block waiting for two hours on the last two days. And when it re-opened, it was the same. I think it's calmed down a little.

That's exactly what I said -- when I was a little boy and saw my first Wolverines/Spartans game on TV. The full quote is: Daddy, why are those people so excited? Both teams are from the state of Michigan. They can't lose. Why does it matter? A wise and patient Father quickly cleared up my misconception.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul rivalry may have no relevance in the world of college hockey. But I think we can allow that there are still some differences between the two cities, and that a legitimate rivalry remains. ;) One characterization of the Twin Cities is that St. Paul is the last city of the East and that Minneapolis is the first city of the West. Some truth to that, IMHO.

IIRC there's a landmark BBQ place in AA. You would know better than I if that's still true. Details, if applicable?

What would be the MSP equivallent of a pot of beans? :)

Sadly, there is not one. Some have come, all have gone, eventually.

The only BBQ place I can think of right now in AA is at the corner of State and Packard, and will be closing soon.

We do have Zingermans Roadhouse- which does have a lot of Americana food, including BBQ.

The best BBQ places are in Detroit. And they are really good. You coming up next week?

Is there? Perhaps I'm too spoiled with my travels to parts of the country known for BBQ. Although, Slow's in Detroit is wonderful.

As for my pre hockey food recommendation, Mr. Spots on State Street holds a special place for me. Walking distance to the rink, great cheesesteaks and wings and has become a tradition for me and some friends.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Ummm... The North Star Challenge Cup? A proud two year tradition? Maybe someday, but the Beanpot it ain't. Or am I totally missing your reference?

LOL- I didn't even know they have something already! Shows how little I know about Minnesota.

Definitely need to update my restaurant recommendations. As noted over in the MSU thread, the parent thing has been a little tough on my hockey travel. Sadly I won't be in Detroit for the B1G tourney. BTN will have to do next weekend. See you in Boston?

Yes, we will be there. With parents, too.

Blimpy is an onion peel of it's former self. It just isn't the same, I can't believe that I'm saying this but it sucks now. You'll get a better burger next door at the Fleetwood Diner.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Nice win last night- especially after getting a lead and letting it go twice.

The goals against were odd, but our goals for were really nice. Actually, my favorite was Cutler Martin's rather bland breakaway- he made no real move, just a simple shot. And looked to be the opposite of what Hildebrant expected- as he didn't move.

Keep your heads in this one, guys. We can shorten next weekend by a game with one point. And remember State STILL has something big to play for- so they will come out hungry, too.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

If we steal one at your place tonight I will be thoroughly surprised. But hey, this entire second half has surprised me, so here's to hoping.

Considering how bad we are on the road this season, and what happened last night- it surely could happen again.

Ugh.

Hildebrant was pretty amazing last night. But even when he was not in position when the puck and everyone was flopping around the net, the rest of the team did a heck of a job protecting an open net. So many amazing chances turned away. All we needed was one stinking point.
