Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

if they knew about it then the penalty should have been stopped right away. I dont see how they would have explained that they knew but let the play go on.

You had to be there. I'm just saying. It was a gongshow all weekend.

It's crying over spilt milk now. Don't wanna get Paula all upset and tell us that "we should have gotten more points over the season" instead of making a big stink out of a blown call that could have cost us home ice in the first round. (If you haven't read her latest article, you should. The CCHA info is good, but the little side comments regarding events this weekend in the league smacks of ignorance.)

Yeesh, that's like telling the families of airline crash victims that they should have taken a different plane instead of blaming the airline for whatever error caused the accident.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

One other note: According to posters in the Ferris thread, the Wolverines will play the Bulldogs the next three seasons- next year at Yost, then in Big Rapids, then back at Yost.

Looks like Wolverine Trumpet will still have to pronounce Ewigleben.
unofficially, MTU has the same deal with Michigan. Anyone have any idea when these games are going to happen? No leaked, NC schedule yet?

That would be nice. We don't normally get our schedule until mid-summer or so.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

While I agree that it was nice they won, the only outstanding part of the game was the first period. The rest of the game was played as we had all season. ugh.

Well, at least we won.

NMU didn't quit and it appeared that we forgot what got us in this spot to begin with. At least Racine was solid again, although radio color analyst Billy Trainor wasn't too kind about that second goal he gave up. We stopped skating, stopped winning battles and stopped winning faceoffs. I don't think we had two or three solid chances after the first period. Give NMU credit for that, but we have to be better tomorrow. I also think that there were a ton of calls (Sinelli got absolutely smoked in the corner, and a couple trips that were let go) that should have been made that weren't, but the officials weren't going to let Michigan feed off of that.

I thought Jon Merrill played a great game and should have gotten a star.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Outstanding. Let's do this again tomorrow night!

As others have said, I'm happy we won but...

Game #1 against NMU was only the 2nd game that I actually attended all year. The first being the season opener, I just couldn't bring myself to go back to Yost after what I saw that night. Only after the last two weeks (against ohio and Ferris) did I feel confident enough to go. Anyway, the first period was Michigan Hockey. The 2nd and 3rd periods was whatever the heck we were playing all year. I should be going to Game #2 tonight and hopefullly it is the last one in Yost for the season (although from what I saw the last two periods Saturday won't be the last game).

As for the Ferris rumor, I've heard that too (but seen nothing official). Please note, I do not have the connections that I did when I was in school. It's all rumor as far as I know.

You are right about Racine- except for the 2nd goal rebound, he had a good night. The first goal was clearly not clear.... But even with the 2nd goal, he still had more rebound problems- Northern had a few chances to tie the game thanks to rebounds. But, like us, their player wasn't *quite* in the right spots.

As much as I fault the D and the possession play- it is kind of interesting to note that the crappy play didn't really result in great chances from Northern- those came from other mistakes....

As for Merrill... he played well, but he certainly wasn't without his mistakes- just like the entire blue line corps, he had some pretty bad turnovers that could have lead to chances. Thankfully, he made that up in other ways. And not from the fluky first goal he scored... I do hope he gets with the other D to have them all fix their game.

One thing that really bugs me about our team- they seem oblivious to obvious plays: 1) if we win our zone faceoff, winger must JET to the opposite boards. The D always, always, always will dump it that way- and if you don't get it, at least you are covering the opposing D that will, 2) shoot high, and makes sure you are turning around- so very many times, a very good shot ends up in an odd man rush because of the bounce off the walls- it happens all the time, 3) blind dumping the puck in your zone rarely works.

They know all of that- and have shown that in many previous instances, as they have recently in complete games. But it keeps coming up.

Yep. I think I noticed two, three times where our wingers abandon their d responsibilities in our end and we end up having two or three guys chasing the puck. Similarly, I saw a ton of standing around (obviously got trapped on a long shift) with the backs to a pinching (and wide open) trailer / point man. I hope it was cleaned up in video review this morning.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Well, that was different than last night, that's for sure. Mostly a great game- just a couple of flubs... All in all, really good.

Now, I just feel bad that a few of the team is just struggling with the puck- most noteably Treias- poor guy just struggled with the puck in traffic... And I noticed that Moffie is making a lot fewer mistakes, but is still having some puck issues. If those guys get on it, and the rest of the team keeps improving- well- they could get the 4 more wins required to make the tournament again.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

4 wins away.

If Michigan gets past next weekend, they will win the whole playoff.

Book it.

We beat teams we should beat the last few weeks, considering where this team was suppose to go. Now they have to take two away from Yost against teams they are 1-7 against this season. Those teams won't make the same mistakes that NMU made and certainly have more talent. OTOH, they will also capitalize on the mistakes NMU didn't. No dishonor if they don't win next weekend- but at least they gave themselves a glimpse of what the team could have been. They only team that is arms and legs better right now is Miami, and they split with them. It's possible.

I was thinking about that a little last night- but the Michgian team that I saw was very much a different team than the one we saw against a rather frail MSU team over a month ago. Passing was much more sharp, and the mistakes were much more limitied. Does that mean we will win? Well, I think they need to improve a lot more than that to win 4 more games, but it sure gives me a lot more optimism. Remember, a month ago, we all figured our season was going to end on some other team's ice last night. Heck of a change.

Confidence and goaltending will do that. Red-isms 101: you don't have to be the best team to win, just play the best.

Good to see Mrs. Alfa there last night.

Take care.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I managed to luck into a Student ticket for Saturday night and wow, I'm both sore and hoarse. I'm getting too old for this stuff but they miss me. Those kids have no idea what they are doing.

Anyway, yes the Saturday game was better played than the Friday night game. There were a few mistakes of course but nothing like the 2nd & 3rd periods Friday night. Hopefully this gives the guys confidence because they'll need it next week. I was kind of indifferent on who I wanted to play in round 2 (ND or WMU) but seeing as how sparty won Sunday in Alaska we get to go to Lawson. That place will be buzzing as those Red-Headed Step-Children hate everything Michigan.

Is anyone going? I'm not sure about TV coverage.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I almost wish I could see you guys play Western. Intensity level should be off the chart.
