Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

CORRECTION - it was NOT a "Real game" - it was an exhibition game - meaningless. So you can make that point #4.

I have been at several games over the past three years or so where there were MANY empty seats, especially on the student side across from my seats, mostly on the north end of that side.

I don't consider point #3 valid. The Tigers game didn't start until 9:10. That is USUALLY about the same time the 3rd period starts. So you would miss the first 3 innings to stay for the entire game.

The reason I included it was that our usher asked if we were going home to watch the game. I never thought about it, but apparently some did.

Oh, and when I mentioned real- that's not about a actual counting game, that was to see a game at the new Yost for real. Which is why that comment lead off my thread, and was not a part of why people didn't come. We didn't come on Sunday, so that was the first time we saw real hockey with the new stands, new lights, etc. real enough.

If you want to read the very first line well into the post, well, I can't exactly stop you. There was a lot of stuff inbetween, though.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I should probably wait a few games before I react to the renovation. I tend to not like change, but know I will eventually grow accustomed to it.

My immediate reactions are:
I like the windows.
I strongly dislike the shiny aluminum bleachers
I don't like the missing stands by the boards in the student section. The Red Cross volunteers where there, and it looks like it may also be handicapped accesible seating...but it gave a restricted feeling to section 17. Despite how empty the stands were last night, I felt claustrophobic. We used to have a wider front row, and a wider row about half way up so one could more easily walk through the stands.
The suites look nice...empty, but nice.
Having the band angled out was a good idea, but as I thought might be the case, the height of a sousaphone was not considered when making those stands. And as alfa pointed out, there's no good place to watch the band for the fans who enjoy doing that.
I prefered having the opposing team's parents across the ice for the wrong reason: being able to see what they do and make fun of it. Hopefully there will be no altercations like the one that moved the opposing parents to the other side of the ice years ago.
I don't mind the spotlight and hype video, but I want the PA sound off as soon as the team steps on the ice and the band starts playing "M Fanfare". Though in general I think the spotlight and hype video give the game more of a pro feel, and atmosphere is a big reason I am more of a college sports fan. Also, did anyone else feel like we were at the Joe for CCHA finals with the darkened lights and spotlights? Now we just need an "M" shape for the spotlight.
The PA is more difficult for me to hear and understand than ever before.
The main complaint though is long time season ticket holders that got moved to far worse seats. My unoccupied seats in the North end are the same, but several of my friends have lousy new locations.

We ran into KC last night- they had back row assignments. I can't really call them seats, since there is a "fence" that keeps people off hte wall and windows, which also prevents real humans from sitting in the seats, since it over hangs the seat bench just enough. Thankfully, they were moved, but it sounds like a LOT o west siders are not happy with the move. Some will try to re-move, some will wait, and the next few years will have people adjust.

A poster on Rivals put up a picture that his $500pp season tickets have them not seeing one of the goals. Really? A full priced seat where the view is obstructed that much??? This looks like it will take some time to work out.

Oh, and it was really odd to have everyone looking at us during the National Anthem- since the flags were moved from the south end to the north end, right over our heads. My wife mentioned that she didn't do her hair.... :) I'm sure we will get used to it- but we have to look at the video, since straight up is not a great way to look.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Stopped in Yost for the first time today since May (when everything was tore up). I was extremely impressed. I understand that many of you traditionalists will have a hard time getting used to it but I believe that once the season gets rolling that it will have an even more intimate feel to it. I really like it, granted I will always miss the old wood bleachers but in time everything must change. I wish that I would have made it to last nights game but it completely slipped my mind.

I happened to pop in there today during a practice. It was only a practice but I wasn't impressed, let's hope that I just wasn't paying enough attention. That may be entirely accurate as the entire time I was in awe of what they did to Yost. I also saw Merril in the stands watching the practice in a neck-brace. I had absolutely no idea who that person was when I walked past him. For all I knew he was just some clown in a neck-brace. I didn't even know that he got hurt last night until I got home and checked my email. Low and behold there was a message there about Merril being out for 6 weeks with a neck injury. I then put 2 and 2 together and realized that was Jon Merril.

Oh well...

Poor kid can't catch a break. Just one free season, for his sake.

Oh, well, time for him to really be part of the team leadership.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Was at the game last night, as I'm sure many of you were. With the incredibly sparse turn-out I'm shocked that I didn't see anyone. Very weak performance by Michigan, I hate to name names but Rutledge was horrible. Actually the first 10 minutes of the opening period I was optumistic about him. That feeling escaped quickly. I was shocked when he was announced as the starting goalie, I thought that he was out for 6 weeks because he just had eye-surgery? I guess that explains those goals he let in, he seriously couldn't see. Wow, our back-up goaltenders must be horrid! This season is looking to be depressing already. Hopefully the boys fix what is broken (which is pretty much everything). They will, Michigan is a 2nd half team.

I hope...

It wasn't just him, although at least 3 of the 5 goals could be attributed to his play. RIT took over the game in the third period and our defensive coverage was terrible. Give them credit- down 3-0 and 4-2 in the third to score three straight- there is no quit in that team. Michigan will just have to re-group and get back at it tonight. The Wolverines wasted good scoring chances and Watson was definitely stronger as the game went on.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Couple of things that alarm me...

Trouba appears to be a good player- but he needs to remind himself how to play defense, especially covering a moving target. Just in the first two periods I saw, me flat out missed the guys quite a few times- enought to make me rather nervous. Apparently correctly. Great to see him get some points- with an assist and a great wrap around goal, but right now, I'd much rather seem him play defense and help the goalie out.

This is the second time the third period was not so good. Windsor was a 2-2 tie in the third, with Red mentioning that the goalie was being let out to dry. It's pretty clear that this is still a problem.

Burying the puck- you guys need to calm down a little, and make better shots. with the time spent in their zone, it should have been 5-1 or more after 2. But they let the goalie get his vision, and then let him dominate.

We look to be a good team, for the most part. It was interesting to see them go to the blue line as a team during the introductions. Now they need to translate that into a full 60 min of solid hockey.

On that regard - I was surprised our team did not go to the blue line at all during introductions.

Definitely. After all, his number and name are followed by a "D" not an "F"! That said, I have confidence Red will drill that into him fairly quickly.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

AND being outplayed in the 3rd period is very troubling and out of character for a team coached by Red.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I wasn't able to be at Tuesday's game so last night was the first opportunity I had to watch action from my new location. They DEFINITELY lowered the level of the first few rows - I would guess a good foot or so. Now when the play is on my end the linesman blocks my view.

Regarding "Obstructed view" - the guy next to me toward the penalty box had a problem with the first seat in the row. The "Boards" on the end of the PB blocked his view. The ticket for that seat had a star either before or after the seat number that the other ticket and my tickets did not have. We are guessing the star designated obstructed view. Question to others who have voiced complaints - did your ticket have that star? Also, the price was the same! BAD decision.

I imagine missing Merrill hurts in the short term, but will definitely put the chosen six on the backline on notice. Michigan is still a "push the tempo" team, and many of the forwards got caught cheating, especially when transition turnovers occurred. It left too many odd man chances that RIT pounced on. I saw the same issue last season too many times. Clear the freaking zone, then go on the attack.

Too many of these types of efforts from our goaltending will also relegate this team in a hurry.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

So, who is Jenny? And did she say yes?

(vox- so you guys don't see the ads at all? There was a proposal between the first and second period. kind of a shock. Mrs Alfa wondered if there was another Jenny who mistakenly though she was being proposed to)

Thanks to us staying the entire game, we finished well... ;) They did shoot a whole lot better. And D coverage was much improved. Trouba did better, but still whiffed on some open ice checks. Kid can sure skate with the puck. He'll be fine, I think.

Nieves- good lord, that kid is going to wrack up some numbers. BTW, vox- you are pronoucing his name wrong. We'll stop by and give you something closer sometime. He's fast, good with the puck, and does smart things.

Funny- after 2 real games, I can still only tell you Rutledge, Raicene, Trouba, and Nieves as the Freshman.

Any word on Claire? It didn't look good as he left the ice.

Milne played both games and Selman and Copp were out hurt.

Tidbits: Serville told me after the game that Clare has an undetermined injury... he left Yost in an arm sling and will have tests taken.

That leaves us with no reserve d-men since Szuma would have to step in, if Clare is out.

Copp told me that he could have played, but decided to wait until next week. He hurt his ankle sliding into the post during practice. Selman is still limping around with stitches in his calf.

Had to give props to Andy Sinelli, who not only scored a laser beauty for his first ever, but hit the post on a SH breakaway AND laid out two heavy checks.

Much better effort... RIT is a good team but still doesn't have our depth- they appear to only be two lines deep and have very young defensemen. BUT, they took a 3-2 game into the third again. This time, Michigan put on the jets and didn't let up. It helped to have solid goaltending, although Racine's side to side is slow and overcompensates. We have to do a better job defending the back door play, especially shorthanded. We didn't yield a shg in the two games, though, scored one ourselves and added 3 PPG's.

Racine picked up his first ever Michigan win.

Good series this weekend, thanks for having us. I'm sure this has helped both teams sort out some issues. We'll see you next year in Rochester!
