Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

vox- so you guys don't see the ads at all? There was a proposal between the first and second period. kind of a shock. Mrs Alfa wondered if there was another Jenny who mistakenly though she was being proposed to

I just don't look at the video board.

Nieves- good lord, that kid is going to wrack up some numbers. BTW, vox- you are pronoucing his name wrong.

How can you mispronounce "Boo?" ;)

Darn, I was hoping to blame you for something... Alas, we will never know who Jenny is.

How can you mispronounce "Boo?" ;)

Ever thought about using his actual first name? Cristoval?

Alas, you started the game getting Nieves right, but by the end of the game, well... gotta speak with Mrs Alfa. (we really regret missing the picnic- she'd like to speak with him)

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I asked him that question directly and his answer was "Boo is fine."

LOL... thought so- I looked up some history on him, and Boo is a derivative of a nick-name his mom called him. Now that he's at Michigan, you need to convince him to shorten it by one letter.... ;)

Watching him on the ice, you are going to speak his name quite a lot. He's a heck of a hockey player.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

The Rivals news is reporting that Kevin Claire suffered a shoulder injury, and will not play Friday.

With two of the veterans out, now we will really get a look at how deep our D is. Should be interesting, Friday- Szuma is getting the start- he played well against Windsor, so hope that continues.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

We've reached a goalie dilemna already...

http://www.michigandaily.com/node/68396

No dilemma in net. One weekend doesn't make for a controversy. Racine seems to be on top of it a little more, although no one at Yost is ready to hand him the job just yet. He got bailed out frequently by his defense on Friday but made most of the stops he should have.

Rutledge is younger and struggled, but like Red said, is a better goalie than he showed. He just needs time to mature and settle in. I am thinking that Red might pull a fast one and start him on Friday, since we begin conference games against Miami next.

The bigger question is, how will our defense hold up? Szuma is a lunch bucket guy that has to stay within his skillset to avoid mistakes. Get the puck, move it, clear the zone, play good positional hockey.

Bentley is a much improved team that will come in to Yost with confidence. They have excellent goaltending. We need to play well defensively since our offense should be fine.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I, too, don't think it's a dilemma. Rutledge got the chance he was promised, but didn't deliver. Seeing how freshman get their first game, it's not really that shocking, so I expect that he'll figure out what the issue is. And having a battle between two good goal tenders is a good thing, I think. If they push each other hard (as they say they are), we should have some solid net keeping.

In addition to Szuma, I also home that Trouba figures out how to cover a body in our D zone this week, as well. He did a great job with the puck every time he had it. But totally missed some open ice coverage- be it a whiff on a check or just leaning on a player. He seems to be a step behind in his physical play. Not to say he's not trying, but I do hope he does not turn into another Jack Johnson.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Getting better. Bentley played pretty well, and spent a lot of time in our zone. But we managed to keep the "panic" situations down, except for the third period, briefly. The first two goals were solid by them- good shot and a good rebound both found the back of the net.

Good to see the team really push hard for goals, even though they were struggling with the puck much of the night. I would guess it will take the normal month or two for the passes to get crisper and cleaner, but the turnovers were not horrific.

Guptil got some luck tonight, and finally got his first two of the year. Good for him!

Trouba is getting better, too- laid out a few strong checks, and covered the zone better- but still missed a check, which was the start to the pressure of the 2nd goal. At this point, I'm pretty optimistic that he'll get the D part figure out so that it won't be a liability to his scoring gift. His passing is really good, I think- probably a month or two ahead of the rest of the team.

(ironically, Jack Johnson was at the game... nice leather jacket)

I have to mildly disagree. Bentley's top line applied the most pressure, but for the most part, the ice was tilted. Final shots were 56-25. Bentley's first goal was created on a defensive breakdown and, while Gensler is a sniper, that was a savable shot shortside. Not a good goal at all for Racine. The second goal was another defensive responsibility that got botched. Kid walked out of the corner untouched and put home a rebound. The third goal was a bullet on a delayed call. Serville actually prevented a goal opportunity in taking the penalty, then the defense broke down. Maher ripped it, once again Grieve and Gensler were in on the play.

I thought Copp-Hyman-Selman was our best line all night. 2G 3A from that line. AJ & PDG were also dangerous with Moffatt, producing 2G 3A also. KLynch-Guptill-Nieves were effective with 2G 3A also. Pass of the night belongs to Trouba, setting up Lynch on a breakaway and Guptill finished the rebound. Gupper got ripped off on the early whistle waived off goal, and emphatically made the referee's goal signal from behind the net after his first goal. Mac Bennett played a strong defensive game. Mike Szuma also held his own, although he got caught a few times in the first period.

I like our team, should be entertaining- but Racine and Rutledge will make or break our season. They need to improve. Racine got stronger as the game went on. Bentley is a good team, BIG, but got worn down in the third period. Couldn't keep up with our speed or endurance.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Big question after tonight- who's going to be in net tomorrow? Racine looked reasonably good, but stil giving up some pretty big rebounds. The thing that's concerning- both of Miami's goals, he wasn't in the net. Not good. Could the D have played the puck better, sure. But he's got to make sure that he's done playing the puck, and back in the net quickly. We will see, I suppose.

Some more improvement- but I will still harp on Claire's passing- come on- make them CRISP. Trouba was better in the zone, but not quite fixed. Not exactly sure how he got an interference penalty when I could have sworn the guy had the puck... but whatever.

PK was good, PP was better moving the puck.

It was good, and plenty of things to continue to build on.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

BTW, did anyone mention a very subtle thing that happened during the 4th goal? Just as Trouba and Guptil were attacking the net, Claire went to the bench to change, Serville replacing him. Once Guptil scored, Serville turned around and put Claire back on the ice- which I think was so that he could get +- credit for the score. Seems like a very good statement about the team as a team.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

As for Trouba- I'm pretty sure I've mentioned a few times that his defense still needs a lot of work. He's missing physical coverage a LOT. Great shot, great passing, all that forward stuff. Just isn't covering people. Put Clare's coverage and Trouba's puck skills, and we are talking. But we are getting Clare turning the puck over, and Trouba not getting the subsuquent coverage much at all.

This team has a lot of work to do.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Although I believe both Racine and Rutledge appear on par for now, I'm ready to jump on the Racine bandwaggon. The results have been acceptable with him in net (for me, a W is acceptable).
How long until we get Merrill back? The defense is severly lacking. Can someone teach Trouba to play solid D? There are many things I see in Trouba that remind me of Jack Johnson. Mostly, great offensive skills for a D guy, size, and failing on some of his defensive responsiblities.

Ok, with that out of the way, can we talk about my Halloween costume now? Did ya'll like it? I made it myself. I also like that I got on the big screen a lot more when my face is hidden.

Tell me why the team plays better in front of Racine? Confidence? Luck? The kid was unconscious on Friday, when the goals that Miami scored could have been doubled, at least. He made two egregious errors that he got away with, and yet, if it was Rutledge in net, y'all would be all over him. I'll say it again, Rutledge had a poor outing against RIT and should have been vilified. He gave up 1 goal in 40 minutes, then his team went to sleep on him. I hardly think that it was "all his fault", especially since this was the 2nd time it happened to him- without the benefit of letting in a soft one. Sooner or later you're gonna have to look at the whole product here. You're asking both of these kids to come in and step into the shoes of perhaps one of best goaltenders all time in an M uniform and perform at his level because our team decides to relax on a lead and take shifts off. It's not fair to either of them. They need support, not criticism. Racine is going to have his rough spots- what are you going to say then? Red will make them make the choice easy for him, but for now the sample size is too small to make that call yet.

Oh, and wT, whatever it was I am sure it was fabulous.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Hello to all -

I figured I would post there here in case one of you had an interest. I acquired a nice collection of game used sticks (many used during their college days) of former Wolverine players. Shipping is $25 within the US for any number of sticks (the shipping cost comes from the length, the weight is minimal). (The white team signed stick and Shields signed Vic are already $old.)

$75 Stick – Mike Komisarek #8, from his time at the University of Michigan. Bauer Supreme 3030, Taped / used, no breaks, batch / pattern code 011105 01

$60 Stick – Mike Komisarek #8, from his time at the University of Michigan. Bauer Supreme 3030, Partially taped / used, no breaks, batch / pattern code 011105 01

$100 Stick, Goalie – Al Montoya, CCM / Heaton Graphite, Taped / used, no breaks, date code 12 AOUT 2004, stamped "AL.MONTOYA" from his time at the University of Michigan.

$100 Stick, Goalie – Al Montoya, CCM / Heaton Graphite, Taped / used, no breaks, date code 28 MAI 2004, stamped "AL.MONTOYA" from his time at the University of Michigan.

$100 Stick, Goalie – Dan Blackburn, TPS, Auto’d “To Keith all the best”, toe crack, stamp “BLACKBURN & 5975” - I believe this was from his last pro team in the CHL (C. C. Rayz).
