Brendan Morrison will be inducted into the U-M Athletics Hall of Honor on Feb. 16:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three former standout student-athletes at the University of Michigan have been named to the prestigious U-M Athletics Hall of Honor, director of athletics Dave Brandon announced Saturday (Sept. 15). Men's swimmer Gustavo Borges (1992-95), football player Rob Lytle (1974-76) and ice hockey player Brendan Morrison (1994-97) have been chosen for the honor by a selection committee.

"Gustavo, Rob and Brendan distinguished themselves while competing at the University of Michigan and helped make their teams better because of their hard work, dedication and passion for their respective sports," said Brandon, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "They are deserving of induction into the U-M Athletics Hall of Honor, the highest athletic distinction that our athletic department bestows upon a former student-athlete or coach. We look forward to celebrating their athletic and professional endeavors later this academic year."

I just caught this a month and a half after the fact - NC$$ Rules changes from NC$$ website:

Among the changes is to allow some displacement of the goal posts as long as the posts remain in contact with the pegs or pins. For a goal to be awarded in these situations, the posts must have been displaced by the actions of a defending player. The referee must determine that the puck would have entered the net between the normal positions of the goal posts.

Additionally, goals that ricochet into the net off an attacking player’s skates will be allowed, unless the referee determines that the puck was intentionally kicked.

The Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committees have issued a number of interpretations in this area recently, and members believe this clarification removes any judgment or doubt for the on-ice officials.

Another rules change for next season is that all hand passes, including those in the defensive zone, will be illegal. The referee will stop play on any hand pass, and the faceoff will be in the offending team’s defensive zone. Additionally, if the team commits the violation in its defensive zone, that team will not be able to change players before the ensuing faceoff.

The Playing Rules Oversight Panel also approved an overtime procedure that conferences can adopt or competing teams can use by mutual consent that limits the number of players to four on each side. The National Hockey League has used this system in recent years, but the NCAA hockey community has not reached consensus on this as the best approach. A five-on-five format is the default procedure if the four-on-four approach is not used.

In a move relating to officiating, the panel approved making the two-referee, two-linesman system mandatory for men’s ice hockey effective with the 2013-14 season. Additionally, goal judges will be recommended but not required for NCAA games.

Me and Gordie do it right and left.... I liked to watch the goalies eyes light up when you change on a rush in close.

YEAH!

WAY too high. Not just in the net but too many other key pieces from last year are gone. As highly regarded as the incoming players are, they will still be FRESHMEN!

Like Bo said, "The best thing about Freshmen is that they become Sophomores."

Totally meaningless. The team is the team whether the pre-season polls have them at 1, 5, 10, or even Poland.

I just hope that they can play well together. Big, big changes.

I'm not afraid of having a Freshman goalie at all- that's worked out pretty well in the past. I'm more concerned about the Team. Even then, I'm just looking foreward to October 9 to see how they play.

True, and thus is the reason I'm cautiously optimistic about this upcoming season. I know our history dictates that Freshmen step up big time but I'd feel more comfortable with a more experienced team all-around.

I wouldn't say the polls are totally meaningless at this point, take that ranking with a grain of salt yes but not meaningless.

I'll say it: Polls are totally meaningless at this point.
Even at the end of the season polls don't matter. I think in college sports especially, where we only have a player for 4 years if we're lucky, a preseason poll is just something that's done so people can write articles about the upcoming season.

And that preseason poll looks like someone took teams that were in the NCAA tournament last year and traditionally good teams then randomly generated an order to list them.

This is true.

My guess is that Michigan is a top 15 team right now. They will struggle to score consistently but should be better defensively than they started last season. Goaltending is x-factor. Special teams need to be special again.

I am thinking that WMU, ND and Miami are better than Michigan is (on paper) in the CCHA. Ferris isn't going to disappear and Ohio is going to right the ship after they floundered after December. Toss NMU, BG, LSSU and MSU in a hat. Alaska will probably struggle this season.

Expect similar type close and low scoring games again in the CCHA this year, with few offensive stars throughout the conference.

Like last year, M could play itself to a top preseason ranking, but will the consistent offense be there to support that play? I doubt this team will be able to score with the likes of BC, Minnesota and North Dakota.

I think a NCAA preseason ranking of 8-10 is about right. Goaltending has to prove itself, but should be supported by a talented defense with only one Freshman playing. The offense is relying on young or unproven talent.

My expectation is to challenge WMU for first in the CCHA, and obtain a #2 seed for the Grand Rapids regional.

The defense has to be the key to this team, just too much talent there in those six players to not lead this team.

Througout the league, does any team have a proven second scoring line? Not really.
I'd say WMU is the favorite, strong D and G, but need players to emerge after Balisy and Berschback. They did graduate some of their tough to play against Sr. forwards.

Miami turned over 50% of its roster with 11 regulars leaving Oxford. They will need to reload on G and D, and solve for the loss of all the goals Reilly Smith scored. A strong recruitning class will help there.

Notre Dame - a team with an up and down history that rarely performs to expectations. Again, after Tynan and Lee, several players need to step up and contribute. Or else their second line will resemble a fourth line. Current goaltending is not like having Pearce or Brown in net of prior teams.

I've learned that it's a lot less stressful to know anything and have expectations before the season. It's not as if I can do anything about it, anyway- so I'll just come in, see what we have, and try to enjoy it. Of course, that won't stop me from having some compliments or critizisms.

The only think I will expect, since it's what Red has brought onto the ice since I've been watching- being competetive for every game.

There is only one question about this team and it's the goaltender. This defense is star-studded so I don't expect too many goals given up.

I expect a CCHA Championship, CCHA Playoff Championship and a run to the Frozen Four this year.

That is pretty sound, but I think you are still underrating WMU. They have at least three or four returning upperclass forwards including their captain Walters and their top three d-men and goaltenders. (They only lost Tennyson.) Top to bottom they have the most balanced and experienced team coming back.

Notre Dame has a similar mix with the two headed goaltending monster, but probably doesn't have WMU's depth. They did bring in a real good freshmen class, too.

Miami lost a ton of upperclass leadership and scoring, but still has a formidable defense. Their question mark, like ours, will be in net. They also brought in a solid freshmen class.

Ferris is going to be steady with Motte in net and a core group of their offense back. They may have some questions on their blueline, but their system usually covers that.

NMU will be breaking in a new netminder but has size and experience. LSSU brought in a ton of size also + has Kapalka. MSU has some really young talent+ an experienced goaltender. Ohio is an anomaly, but does have a senior goaltender coming back. BG has better, more experienced talent and a returning netminder. Alaska lost some experience, especially in net, but has a senior goalie returning. They have at least one potent scoring line.

Michigan has to show me that they have fixed their special teams, settle in on a goaltender and get steady production from their top lines. I hope we are better defensively and work towards discipline issues that haunted them during the first part of last season. I think losing Chris Brown is a big factor... hopefully guys like Nieves can fill that void right away. Guptill will have to be the sheriff on the ice. If they can accomplish some of these things early, it will give them some confidence. The nc schedule is a bit light in terms of helping their PWR (Cornell and maybe WMU in the GLI are their strongest match-ups) but four CCHA games against Miami/ND and four against WMU will boost them. If other teams in the league perform well, like Ferris, than the schedule will be solid.

I'm hoping for something more along the lines of Turco and Montoya (both solid Frozen Four teams) than the latter. '95 and '03 could easily have been championships, and goaltending was not a weakness.

Starting to get excited for the season. It's remarkable how excited I get for college hockey after a six-turnover football game.
