Michigan Tech Season Thread Part V: We Were Dead On Arrival

Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part V: We Were Dead On Arrival

That's just another example of how flashy high school players don't necessarily make great college players. Especially when they're coming from WI or MI high school hockey (see: Soley, Seth).
edit: my bad, misread your post

carry on :p

Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part V: We Were Dead On Arrival

MN and WI high school hockey are completely different ball games.

It's true, no one does HS hockey like Minnesota. It's like you all have your own little 'franchise' to cheer for, based on where you went, and a huge tourney at the end of the season.

dang, you quoted me before I could edit. :p

I think the biggest thing when looking at those numbers is realizing that he played for a team that comes from a bad conference and a bad section. Look at all of the prolific scorers Little Falls has had over the last couple years: Beau Hanowski, Jared Festler, Ben Hanowski...and what have they done at state? Absolutely nothing, and that is against the small schools.

You mean just another example of how prolific offensive talent goes to Michigan Tech to forget how to score? ;):(

Let me take back my earlier whining. Since then I've heard some recruiting rumors that made me feel all happy inside. Long live JR! :)

If it doesn't involve a pair of twins from Eden Prairie, MN, I won't be impressed.

Blake Hietala. No blue-chipper he, but I'm pleased because he's a local boy, who I've met, and because I called it about 6 years ago. He's a lot like Peter Rouleau, but better at ice hockey.

DL, next time you're bored...what are the numbers like for goals rather than points??

I haven't looked, and I'm not spending time when I'm not on the clock looking it up, but I would expect that Hanowski is still in the lead with probably Spehar second. I think that low total in Benik's sophomore year will hurt his chances there too.

Actually, with all that said, if there were accurate stats kept further back, John Mayasich would blow all of these guys out of the water. He supposedly scored something like 14 goals in a game once...

I see that he's got more size than Rouleau, but I'm curious as to what you think he is better at. Does he shoot the puck more often? Does he make smarter decisions overall? Because he is bigger, he is more physical? etc.

Thanks for the tip, BTW. Heisenberg doesn't have him listed yet.

Here's something I haven't done in awhile...

Drive Time Notes

-Keeping players focused in practice
-Lots of parents will be in town for the series

-Got a full 60 minutes out of the guys on Friday
-Not happy that we gifted Mankato the shutout spoiler
-Saturday was a mixed of good and bad decisions
-Back-to-back penalties screwed us up
-Gwilliam and Olson looked good
-Baker has finally come alive (6 pts. in 4 games). Nearly tied it late in the 3rd on Saturday.

-Duluth is a very good team (duh)
-Need to make the special teams adjustments
-Make good decisions with the puck

-Russell likes the 5 o'clock Saturday games (sounds like a lot of the other coaches do too)
-Less time sitting around and waiting
-Good for the fans as well

I was sort of just throwing that up on the wall to see if it would stick. But since you seem interested, take a look at the Ojibway AAA page. Hietala put up more points per game (all time leaders page) than either Eric Kattelus or Jake Hauswirth in a comparable number of games from '05-'06 to '06-'07. He dominated in his second year there.
I haven't seen him play for a long time, but what I remember most clearly is that he was always his team's hardest worker. He treated every play like it was life and death. He's added a foot of height and a lot of weight since, so I don't know how his game has developed.

I think that means that he's the one with the hookup for very good fake IDs.

What the hell do you need fake IDs for in Houghton? They let like 12 year olds into the DT, don't they?

yeah, if they have a fake ID :p

Plus, they need the fakes when they go on the road!

Haha, don't know if anyone else noticed this or how long it has been like this but McKay is now listed on the actual roster for some reason.

Team Liaison?? What the hell?

That's odd. Maybe they're only allowed to have three assistant coaches (paid or volunteer), therefore they invented a new advisory-type position for McKay. That way, they can have Kochan work on the ice with the goalies.

Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part V: We Were Dead On Arrival

Another thought - it seems likely to me that with the '89 and '90 forwards who have recently committed, the plan is to leave Kero (a '92) in juniors for another season. Hopefully there is a USHL team interested in him after a pretty nice rookie NAHL season. It turns out that he's not only leading Marquette, but also the entire league in goals scored, with about 20 games to play.
