Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part V: We Were Dead On Arrival

We've sunk to the MJHL folks...

Our latest recruit, Adam Stoykewych.
Well, I did notice on Heisenberg that it looks like his brother, from the same junior team, is going to CC.

edit: wooooot!!! a kid from my high school actually made Heisenberg's 2012 (minn/midwest) list already! :D

That is true, and his alleged brother is younger & a defenseman.

Additionally, Adam has only played in 33 games this year (out of a total of 50, from the looks of things).

Here are his stats from the last two seasons

Blue Line Club Luncheon This Friday

The Michigan Tech Blue Line Club will host a luncheon at noon, Friday, Feb. 5, at the Peter Grant Hockey Educational Center. The event will feature comments from head hockey coach Jamie Russell about this weekend's Winter Carnival matchup with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs.

Cost is $8 for members of the Blue Line Club and $8.50 for the general public. The menu will include homemade meatloaf, real mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans amandine, chicken noodle soup, tossed salad, apple crisp with ice cream, and a selection of beverages.

The final Blue Line Club luncheon will take place Friday, Feb. 26, during the last home series for this year's seniors.

Peter will be drafted this year.
Adam is tech material.
"MTU hockey: Do you have a brother that can skate a little?"

Drafted out of the Manitoba league? That seems odd. But this does sound like the usual story...:(

That really isn't that odd any more with the changes to canada's rules. Local kids that want to play college have to play junior hockey in their own province until their 18 now, you could play somewhere else if you went to major junior but they won't allow the younger kids (16-17) to travel to a better junior league. Pete is only 17 so that makes sense...Adam isn't even on the list under SJHL/MJHL for Heisenberg *sigh* depressing to see the quality of recruits drop on paper...

Psh, I played with the highest scoring mshsl player of all time :D

Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part V: We Were Dead On Arrival

You know exactly who I mean...
http://www.mnpuck.com/career_scoring_leaders.htm :D

Even though I know this list is wrong, since Hanowski topped Pohl last season...still Benik isn't up there.

edit: wow, the MSHSL website is so wrong that I don't know where to start, they still have Spehar with the record, and they have him at a lower point total than he actually got...

edit2: A little digging has provided this:
Hanowski - 405
Pohl - 378
Spehar - 311

I can't find a career total for Benik, but my guess is that he's ~ 360-370 right now

edit3: Yes I'm bored at work today.
I found season stats going back to Benik's freshman season (he wasn't on the leaderboard before that). His total, as of now, is 268. If you give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was one point away from making the leaderboard his 8th grade year, that total rises to 302. He was killed by only having 37 points his sophomore year, he must have been injured or something. Anyway, he has no shot at coming close to Pohl or Hanowski.

You aren't the only school who can say that. Jarred Tinordi plays for USNTDP U18 team and may be an NHL 1st round draft choice this summer. He signed with Notre Dame for next fall. His older brother Matt committed to RPI for next fall. RPI tried to get Jarred also but lost out. Matt has talent, but nowhere the potential of his bigger and younger brother. (Their father Mark was an NHL player for many years.)

I wouldn't mind, except this is the fourth time under Russell that we've come up with the less talented of 2 brothers (always the one who didn't have anywhere else to go). Way back in my glorious youth, we were able to get Brent Peterson along with Kyle, and Jeff Mikesch along with Patrick. We've become a dead last resort.

Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part V: We Were Dead On Arrival

Actually found an interesting list while looking up stuff earlier.
Scoring leaders 2005: http://mnpuck.com/2005 Scoring Ldr, B.htm

Check out who is #12 on the list....
...and who is behind him: Niskanen(UMD), VandeVelde(UND), C. Connolly(BU), Lucia(UM).

Granted, Little Falls plays in a horse**** conference so the numbers are a little skewed (see: Hanowski, Ben)

That's just another example of how flashy high school players don't necessarily make great college players. Especially when they're coming from WI or MI high school hockey (see: Soley, Seth).
