So at the approximate halfway point of the junior hockey season (give or take a handful of games, depending on the league), our recruits' stats look like this:
Dennis Rix (Grand Prairie - AJHL): Has maintained his torrid pace with a 27-49-76 line in 40 games, along with a mere 28 PIMs. He may be a fourth-year player, but he is contributing like a guy with his experience ought to be. His team is essentially competing for second in the AJHL's North Division, as a stacked Spruce Grove team that allows an average of only 1.6 GPG has run away with a 14-pt. lead.
Brad Stebner (Fort McMurray - AJHL): Is the top-scoring defenseman on his team, with a 4-22-26 line and a whopping 108 PIMs (about 1/3 of which are fighting-related). His team is also more or less competing for second in the AJHL North, and they are currently sitting in third place, just one point behind Rix's team.
Tanner Kero (Marquette - NAHL): Owns a 16-8-24 line with a +9 rating through 28 games played, is tied for second in PPGs, and leads his team in total goals scored. Has a very reasonable 27 PIMs (15 of which were for a fight back at the beginning of the season). He just enjoyed a huge 6-pt. weekend against bottom-feeding Alpena, and his Rangers have a slim two point lead in the NAHL's North Division, with Janesville and Traverse City nipping at their heels. Should be an exciting second half for them, with the main question apparently being whether or not Marquette's stingy defense and strong goaltending will hold up down the stretch.
Jacob Johnstone (Sioux Falls - USHL): In 21 games played, has a 7-8-15 line and a +1 rating, good enough to be tied for fifth in goals scored and total points. Among regular players, is tied for lowest number of PIMs on the team with just eight minutes spent in the sin bin. His Sioux Falls Stampede are clinging to 2nd place in the USHL's West Division by two points, with Fargo close behind and Omaha still in sight ahead of them (they're eight points behind with two games in hand).
Dan Sova (Waterloo - USHL): After a slow start to the season points-wise, he has recorded at least one point in all but two games since in November 20th, and currently owns a 4-11-15 line with a +8 rating and 47 PIMs. He is sixth in total points on a very weak Waterloo team which is currently tied for dead last in the East Division with the US Under 18s. Here is an
interesting article about him. Along with Mankato recruit Zach Palmquist, he is the only other defenseman on the team with double-digit points and a positive +/- rating.
But all of this is moot, as Russell clearly has no idea what he's doing on the recruiting front and should've been fired last summer.
