Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

I hope Petan stays and that Winnipeg let's Jamie finish up his senior year. Losing those 2 would definitely hurt. I am wondering if Tanner will finish school of sign, he is definitely good enough to sign somewhere. I think we'll hear about Blake soon.

I would be more worried about Cliff Watson leaving than Petan.

I would put money on Tanner finishing school at somepoint regardless if he signs. He is a scholar!

True, he's a very important piece of next year's team. It's sad that he doesn't get the recognition he deserves because defensive defensemen basically always get ignored.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Tanner's decision will probably have a lot to do with what kind of contract offers he gets. As for early departures, there are a few to worry about but hopefully Petan stays because of his cousin coming in and unfinished business. Watson also has the chancectonplay with his brother but MTU must be expecting some early departures with all the defensemen stacked up on the recruiting side.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

The difference between winning and losing is small. Heck RIT beat Mankato because a ref was stupid. Without a lot of hard work you lose, even to the worst teams,( and Tech almost got beat by UAH, and it took 3 OT's to win the game) so if UND takes the foot off the gas even a little bit they lose, and that's what happened. The motivation wasn't there. I'm not saying that it was super intentional, only that they didn't really care about the result and it's pretty obvious that if they had, they would have won.

First off, what RIT-MSUM call did you disagree with? The GWG?

Secondly, if UND wasn't trying, why'd they put their best lineup out there and play McIntyre? They were trying to wrap up the number one overall seed and trying to win HARDWARE. True, SCSU had their season on the line so they had more motivation, but UND gave 100% and SCSU put up a bottling defensive effort.

Maybe focus on your own thread, instead of butting in here? Ok?

It looks like a very good chance Phillips is still at Tech next year. Winnipeg has a lot of depth in goal right now. The only thing that might accelerate his climb is if another keeper is traded or if his rights are dealt for a draft pick to a team that has current needs at that position. Winnipeg likes him, but at this point, he's a developmental prospect.

Petan isn't a flight risk at all.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Mel P show summary for 3-30, questions only. I didn't post a summary of the game. Didn't feel like reliving it.

I have to agree with Mel regarding NCAA tourney neutral sites vs. home sites. Something needs to give to go to home sites. Right now, the bigger schools will only do 2x1s or 1 for none, typically resulting in more wins, higher PWR and then get home sites for playoffs. Something has to balance that out.

Questions for Mel:

Talk about recruiting, will our experience in the tourney benefit recruiting?
It does. Young men want to play at programs that have a chance at NCAAs.
It'll open more doors for us, it already has this year. We're talking to kids that wouldn't have interest only a few years ago.
We can sell that we've been in the tourney and expect to be there.

Shelast will be anxious to get all the guys in the weight room after a few weeks off. Work on getting quicker/stronger. This wets your appetite, you see you can compete with these teams. Want to get back there.

Why did you not have Kero on the PP instead of less experienced underclassmen?
Tanner was on with Gould/L'Esperance, wanted to have good groups together. If we got a couple more PPs, we were going to move him into other group in this game. But only one PP. Small factor.

Why did you make so many changes to lines during the game?
We had different combos to keep certain people away from other players. Some long shifts, and PK changed it up too.

Side note: We didn't have Blake P. available. Senior who would've helped us in this game. Blake playing so well. His lower body ceased up on him late Thursday, pain. Had x-rays, did everything to be able to play. Blake couldn't even dress for warmups.
Blake will be okay, but poor timing. Dirk - he sat in front of Dirk during game with his parents. Father Pietila excited when Tech pulled ahead, for hopefully a chacne for Blake to play next night.

Do you expect seniors to sign?
Yes we've had a number of calls from NHL teams yesterday regarding our players. Hoping to keep our underclassmen.
Don't expect to lose them, but yes there will be some senior signings.

Where do underclassmen go for summer?
They 'll go home before Track A. Then they'll be here through June for Track A for off-ice training. There'll be ice July/Aug. Some guys will stay all summer.

What happened to Walker Hyland?
It's a numbers game. He fell behind a number of guys. He had a good start to the year. He'll have great opp next year with Sweeney/Davis grad. Walker will have a good off-season. He had a solid year.

There's talk about moving from regional sites and giving it to top seeds. Thoughts?
Like the way it is, neutral sites. Mainly because you'll find it's hard to win on the road. The way teams schedule games, it favors bigger programs. They don't schedule road games, so then they'll win more games, basically buying/schedule home regionals.
Mel's open to anything to help game. Neutral sites make tourney beautiful, any team can win. Want it to be true national tourney instead.

Will you use redshirt for Kero and others?
Kero, Blacklock, Anderson. They can redshirt. Have discussed it a little, will more now in the off-season. It wont affect goalie recruit. That's more tied into when Jamie leaves.

Will early tourney exits hurt WCHA in terms of perception?
No, maybe if you just look at scores. If you watched both games, and look at body of work you know WCHA teams were good. Anything can happen in NCAAs. Hockey people know, we played really well against SCSU.

At Final Five did all tourney team get award?
Yes 2nd place gets a token award. We also got a participation award for going to Fargo.

The only way the 2-1s will go away is when teams stop accepting them. 1-0 usually comes with a nice financial guarantee. But with Ann Arbor & MSU, they grace you with the honor of their presence once and you go to their barn twice on your dime.

Like John Prine sings, "that's the way that the world goes round". I don't have any real issues with 2 for 1's. If Mel is willing to play UM and MSU twice at their barn, i'm all for it. I hope Tech gets Penn State on the schedule. Hockey Valley is really cool. Tech fans would enjoy that trip.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

I have @ Michigan State, @ Michigan, vs Wisconsin penciled in for next season along with the GLI (we get 8 NC games next year)
There is also the possibility that one of those gets bumped to 2016-17 to make room for Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis if schedules work out between that and GLI.
2016-17 I have GLI, @ Michigan State and @ Lake State penciled right now (we get 10 NC games in '16-17)

Other than GLI and 2 games with LSSU every other year, thats all I have for potential NC games. There is the possibility that the Michigan State or Michigan deals become 2 for 2 but I'm pretty sure they were not signed that way.

Now that the season is over and its time to look ahead to next season, I'm going to attempt to get caught up on THG recruiting news starting in the middle of April. Lots to talk about between the potentially redshirted players and trying to figure out who is coming in next season.
