Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Don't know if it had any affect on Riley when he fell, but the ice was terrible last night. There was a wet streak that ran through the face off circle that looked like it went to the blueline about where Riley fell. The ice in the face off cicle never froze until 10 minutes into the periods. In the second game between the second and third periods when they removed the net there was standing water two foot wide across the entire width of the back of the net. The spots in the faceoff circle that we could see always looked "funny" when they cleaned the ice during the media breaks. Almost looked soft. We needed one of those empty netters to go in.

The ice conditions really were terrible, especially the second game, you could have gone swimming on the ice in the lakes they left, that being said I don't think it was what caused Sweeney to fall, he just caught an edge and went down. It's really heartbreaking for that to be the way it ended, and I feel really sorry for him, not really his fault, that just happens sometimes.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Many of us remember the Tech power teams from the 70s and have not forgotten Tech's place college hockey tradition. It's definitely very cool that Tech is once again a hockey force to be reckoned with.

My freshman year (75-76) we finished 2nd, I didn't realize how hard it was to get there. Wasn't able to follow for many years (no streaming), so I missed a lot of pain, but now I can and we are back knocking on the door. Really enjoyed the past few seasons and am looking forward to next year!

I finished undergrad at UND in '75, and I recall big, fast Tech teams coming to the old Ralph and kicking our arses. A lot of people kicked Sioux arse in those days, but Tech more than its share.

Tough loss, but that's playoff hockey. Good learning experience for the underclassmen. They now know you have to put teams away when you have them on the ropes.

Does Phillips return?

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Congrats to a good season Tech. Tough way to end it but Mel has you playing good hockey and you'll be back. Glad to see Houghton with a solid hockey club, your fans were always a lot of fun to have in town.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

I must admit I didn't expect this from MTU this year. I expected them to compete but not to this level! I was not even thinking NCAAs at the beginning of the season.

That being said, I like this team! Congratulations to Mel and the Team on an absolutely fantastic season! I don't remember being this excited about the Huskies since Newell Brown was the coach.

Tough group of seniors to replace but remember, we only lose Sweeney and Davis on D who will be replaced with Birks! Our D corp will be strong. To be determined who steps up to replace Pietila, Kero, Johnstone, and Heitila.

Looking to next season already!

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

I don't know whether I should feel better or worse seeing Mankato knocked out too.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

I was pulling for the Mavs. WCHA pride and all that. but have to love the RIT underdog story. and they do play in my 2nd favorite conference.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

(Tech fan, WCHA fan, closeted UMD fan) all my teams keep losing hockey games. :(

Ditto. I'd have been okay with MSU-M or BU winning it, and only one of them are still alive (friends that are fans, and I don't hate those teams).

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Now you know why the WCHA stays away from HE.The refs treated Mankato bad in Providence last year, Tech bad at ND last year, LSSU bad at ND this year and now this.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Absolutely one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
Wel you must not have read chris dilks talking about how lackadaisical UND was in that game, how they could care less, and were totally unconcerned about the result. So maybe UND was really trying hard, but you know, I sort of doubt it. More likely, they were just going thru the motions. But go ahead and think whatever you want.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Well this year's tournament is going pretty much opposite of how I wanted, so sad. Obviously Tech being the worst.

Nobody goes out there without the intention of winning. I didn't buy that in 2001 when people think Dean Blais "let" SCSU win the Final five. You play...to win...the game.

The difference between winning and losing is small. Heck RIT beat Mankato because a ref was stupid. Without a lot of hard work you lose, even to the worst teams,( and Tech almost got beat by UAH, and it took 3 OT's to win the game) so if UND takes the foot off the gas even a little bit they lose, and that's what happened. The motivation wasn't there. I'm not saying that it was super intentional, only that they didn't really care about the result and it's pretty obvious that if they had, they would have won.

Come on, UAA was the worst. ;)

Agreed. I felt that North Dakota gave its best effort at the Frozen Faceoff. St. Cloud just got a lead and played one of the best defensive games I've seen in quite some time. SCSU limited North Dakota to less than 20 SOG, despite the Sioux basically being in the Huskies' zone for the majority of the 2nd and 3rd periods. No doubt in my mind that the Sioux gave 100% effort...it just wasn't enough last weekend. Fortunately, it was last night.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

From what I can tell from past consolation games, teams try and win, sure, but they won't take unnecessary chances at all. Why? Remain healthy for the post season. This is a general statement, of course. If a team NEEDS to win the consolation to make the post-season, they will go balls out.
