Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I for one welcome our new women's basketball overlords.

All Hail the Women Hoopsters, congrats for a fanstastic season, and bring home the nets!

It is utterly, perhaps indescribably, amazing that a program born of Title IX during Tech Hockey's Glory Days could grow out of negative turnover to assist ratios and play for the National Championship while in the same time span our Hockey program experienced such a reversal of fortune that no one who attended games in the '70's could have ever predicted it, even with the help of LSD. Hopefully what's left of Hockey's coaching staff is arranging for the hockey players to attend the basketball game in Missouri so they can see firsthand that persistence and perservence will ultimately be rewarded.

MTU is a cohost and actually started the GLI bringing UM in later on. Only recently have UM, MSU been constantly in the mix. Even with them there the turn out is not as good as it used to be. Far weather fans in MI

The facilities do seem very good compared to NMU, Yost, LSSU and many others I have been in. It's a good barn for a game.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

For those in metro Detroit, Tech will be featured on the sports segment of the channel 7 6 pm news tonight.

What about Ron Foggerty at Adrian. He was an assistant at the D1 level for 10 years and did a really nice job there. In his 4th yr his teams in the final 4.

Let's face it MTU's toughest sell is the location.

With the new Big Ten conference taking 3 of the 8 Womens WCHA teams and the success of Womens sports at MTU, I think it's the perfect time for Tech to establish a Womens hockey team. I'm sure we could work out a deal with the city to get practice time in the old Dee Stadium. As a founding member of the WCHA, I feel we have a responsibility to support the WCHA.

I could see that. He's got a good thing going at Adrian, but he's got a huge senior class graduating this year. Most of those kids were there to put in the first ice at Arrington arena. Tech makes the right offer, he might move. I do believe he has a kid playing travel hockey out of Toledo.

There is no Women's B1G HC scheduled because there are only 4 planned to exist in 2014...

Really? I think the location is an asset, not a liability. I grew up in Ann Arbor and had the grades to go to U of M or Moo U but I'd been to Houghton in high school to go camping at Isle Royale and loved the area's natural beauty.

Ann Arbor's not that great. It's infested with liberals and the weather sux. They won't let Wal-Mart build in town so you have to go to Ypsilanti for the big box stores. I tell people it's a cult, not a city. East Lansing is in the flat farm country. Both schools are large and impersonal. How many universities own a ski hill near campus? How many have water falls nearby? Great Lakes? Hunting? Fishing? I lived on Blanche Street and I could walk up to the end of the street with my cross country skis and hop on a trail. Where else can you do that?

The MacInnes is small but at least it has seats. Yost has bleachers! At U of M the parties are on Thursday nights because a lot of students drive home to the Detroit suburbs on weekends. U of M women are not great unless you like East Coast JAPs. No matter how many championships U of M hockey wins, it's still a football school and hockey fights with baseball for recognition. Housing is expensive. I would love to recruit against U of M.

Recruiting is like sales, you simply have to spin your strengths and know your competitors weaknesses. Ask yourself why you went to Tech. Did you enjoy your time in Houghton? Did you swim in Lake Superior? Did you ever see the Northern Lights while walking to an 8 AM winter class? Did you enjoy the personal touch of a small school like Tech? Think about it...

Boo hoo, too bad. The WCHA should kick 'em out. They can keep playing each other for all I care. Penn State, Michigan and Nebraska make enough money on football to bankroll Womens hockey teams. If Wisconsin, Minnesota and OSU can field teams, so can UofM, Penn State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana and MSU.

Hockey trophies have they're own case, because they're more important.

They do have their own case, however, it's not in the hallway where it used to be, last time I was up at the SDC, they were in the process of building new cabinets and trophy cases in the area to the right just inside the main entrance.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Regarding the sales pitch: it's all good points, but how much does a 16 or 17 year old looking to "make it big time" are thinking about that? They hear of those parties on Thursday nights, they hear of the "rivalries" with tOSU and MSU, and they hear how schools like the B1G schools "produce NHLers."

It's awfully hard to try and get an impressionable kid to think about what his major is going to be, let alone convince him that things we now enjoyed in the UP and miss now that we moved away are more beneficial than what they could experience at UM/MSU.

It's a little easier to pick up a third/fourth line guy turned away from those schools and tell the kid: "Hey, want to stick it to that B1G school that denied you? We play them x times in the next four years."

Now with the B1G conference, THAT marketing tool has been yanked away.

It's going to be a little tougher, but I think the same level of kids, if not a little better, may find their way to the new WCHA and CCHA... Now, you get to promise prospects they have a great shot at being a star in these leagues, not under the B1G shadow.

Location may be a tough sell to a kid from place bigger than the Houghton-Hancock Metropolitan Area. But not everyone wants or needs the bright lights. Nor does everyone want to be just another jock on a campus where football and basketball players are celebrities and hockey players are the ones with funny accents. As others have mentioned, if there is a coaching staff that has proven it can DEVELOP players and an administration dedicated to being competitive, then size won't matter as much as you think.

The location barrier can be lowered by better communications technology/availability. We're not going to get an interstate highway or one of Obama's high speed trains routed to Houghton anytime soon, so parents of players and generous alums need to see games on television more than once in a while.

This. While they're busy replacing the scoreboard and hiring a new coach, could Huskies Live please get a camera upgrade? I dropped my subscription this past season because of how much the current version sucks.

They need more than one camera.! Speaking of the rink, what is the scoop on the freon leak?

Ben Johnson, the Calumet Copper Kings star, was named Michigan's (co) Mr Hockey.
