Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Rangus played four seasons of minor pro and in that time, all but 37 games were played at the "A" or lowest level. He only played 28 games in the ECHL (10 points) and 9 in the CHL (1 point). Most of his pro time was spent in the SPHL, where teams might be less likely to beat North Dakota than would Tech. There was a reason he didn't see a lot of ice time at Tech.
there was some puzzlement when he won Mr. Hockey too, after so many better players had been passed over. One thought was that the coaches were thinking, 'fine, we'll give one to a UP player.'
He also played those pro years after being told that with his heart condition (whatever it is), if he didn't quit he had a decent chance of dropping dead on the ice.

The nested 't' in the 'u' was evidence, according to my freshman year Humanities prof, that "technology was screwing the university."

They live in their own "smoke"-filled world over on the third floor of Walker, don't they? ;)

EDIT: Anyone know where the Institution would post the opening? Apparently not on their main Jobs page.

Idiots exist on this board. Most of them spend a lot of time calling other posters idiots. Geezer is definitely not one of them.

Players, like coaches, get to decide where they want to go (among their options). I wish the kid the best no matter where he goes. If he gets a scholarship offer, he's earned the right to make the choice.

Similarly, we can debate all day as to who Tech "should" hire as their new coach, but you can't make them come. You can try and make it as attactive as possible, but even then, there are limits. Do we really want a coach who is only here for the money?
Well, as has been mentioned elsewhere, I spoke with Cary Eades on Saturday night and after I asked him to apply, he told me he was making more as UND's top assistant than Russell made this year so the issue is why take a pay cut to go to Houghton?

EDIT: F2B&G, it should get posted here: http://www.admin.mtu.edu/hro/postings/#STAFF
Did you get my email?

did you tell him about the new commitment to spending whatever it takes, from our admin and alumni? :)

Oh hey, press for MTU. ;)
ONTONAGON COUNTY -- A Houghton man is uninjured after rolling his vehicle this weekend.

According to the Ontonagon County Sheriff's Department, the crash happened Sunday around 8 p.m. on M-26, west of the Houghton County line.

Slushy roads caused Ian Marks to lose control of his vehicle. It went into the ditch and overturned.

Marks was wearing a seat belt and did not get hurt in the crash.

the metaphor is amazing.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I believe the financial commitment is there to do whatever necessary to get the right guy here. I don't really know Eades, or Guentzel either for that matter, but I doubt any search will go very far until after the season is over and then it will take her about three weeks imho to sort through all the applicants because after the word really gets out on how much they are offering I think there will be a lot of qualified guys applying.

So I am looking at May 1 as my expect something to happen date.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Yes and I am working on a follow up email ;)

Did you include a $20 bill in the "attachments" to show MTU is serious about increasing his pay?
We should also promote the stability of our mascot. No drama about being the Huskies, unlike the Fightless / Spineless Sioux administration. Also his house will most likely have a dry basement every spring. We need to sell them on the little things.

But seriously, maybe we can pass a hat on the student side of the rink and take up a collection each game as a bonus for the coaches. Winning puts more butts in the seats and thus would likely increase their bonus. A type of financial incentive for winning... but totally under the NCAA radar.

For those of you who were around back in 2003, about how long did it take for them to settle on Russell once the search began?

Sertich announced his retirement 3-18-03 and Russell was announced as coach 5-7-03 so less than two months. I'm guessing they knew Sertich was leaving well before he announced it so that might have shorted the window. Of course they might have known Russell was leaving in advance as well. Whether they told him is another story...

I expect an announcement before Memorial Day so that they can get an assistant in place and now totally screw the next class that needs to be recruited this off season.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

BTW, a number of coaches in college hockey have bonuses in their contract for winning. They make a base which is public and a fairly substantial bonus for the final four, which is mostly private. I would expect us to do something like that.
I understand that MSU will announce this week, so it took them what... 6 weeks?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

So basically, anytime after May 1st should be considered the announcement window.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

So now that Shirtless started a new thread on the coaching search, what exactly are we supposed to talk about here?

Thread-killer.:D
